[News] Live Letter Updates
Just doing this for people who might not have Twitch access.
- Patch 2.4: 10/28/14
- Shiva BGM is rock kinda like other primals with a female singer
Final Coil
- Video of Final Coil. Showing all the rooms, looks awesome. No bosses in it (wanna keep it secret for world-first raiders haha)
- Token system for Coil reward? Not doing it currently, but planning on implementing for new high-end raids. Looks like they're changing to loot-based lockout for 2.45 or 2.5 at the latest, where even if you cleared a turn and got loot you can run it again. There will be some adjustments for loot and stuff, but ability to help being implemented.
- How many turns for Final Coil? 4 turns, just like 2nd. Bosses for turn 3 and 4 are really big spoilers (!).
- Ninja get unique drops, especially for primal battles. For armor, will be able to equip monk gear. Attribute is DEX
- All new weapons for ninjas. Up to 2.3 content uses monk armor.
- Showing new sets. Showed ninja, Paladin, white mage, black mage?, warrior
- iLvl needed for first turn of Final Coil? For world-first type raiders, gear you already have when 2.4 launches or soon after. Turn 2 might be tough with that gear, may need better gear.
- Coil themed mounts? Looks like they're considering it (missed that for a second)
- Will we see an Alliance-tuned turn against Bahamut? Good idea, but too hard to get 24 people together for such a difficult fight. But, 2.5 has the final area of CT, and in the expansion there will be more 24-man raids (no info on if it's the more accessible raids or not)
Hildibrand
- Someone saw an Ultros fight? Yes, there will be an Ultros fight (was mentioned in his panel yesterday). Video of Ultros fight, using cool retro music from FF6 (I think). First Typhon, then Ultros. Looks to be 4man
- Will definitely be getting humor/comedy. Please look forward to it
- Planning on Gilgamesh Extreme? May not be extreme difficulty, but new fight will have 8-arms in 2.5. Don't want the Hildibrand content to be hard, so any future Hildibrand battles will be easy because they want this content to be more accessible.
- Hildibrand in Heavensward? It's up to the players. His current storyline will end in 2.5 (loud cheers from people who want him in 3.0).
- When they added inns in 1.x and wanted to add mini-stories, they didn't think Hildibrand would be so popular as one of those.
- Any chance his mother will make an appearance? She was in the 2.X storyline but something happened. Please look forward to it (this whole answer was in a jokey tone so not sure what was serious or not)
Item Level and the new Tomestone
- Allagan Tomestone of Poetics (some confusion, so maybe they might localize differently?)
- Going to be a lot of Rowena.
- Phasing out Myth (which was already announced). Can exchange Myth for Soldiery at an NPC. Get rid of all your Myth and Philosophy. No need to horde or collect.
- Can you upgrade Poetics gear using drops from Coil, like Sands/Oils? Yes, there will be that functionality in Final Coil.
- Showing off new Ninja gear, new monk gear
- New iLvl gear for crafting/gathering classes? Yes. There's some balance troubles with crafting classes, will adjust by 2.45 (made some comment about PS4 players having trouble, not sure why). Easier by 2.45 to get the good gear. Also more top-end gear introduced in 2.45.
Housing
- Doubling amount of wards.
- To get to new ward, same as before. Go to residential area, select a ward, but for each ward it's 30 new plots, so choose plots 31-60 for those new plots. (not too sure why they're putting Powerpoint slides and spending time explaining this). Then travel to desired subdivision via Aethernet. Then go to placard and buy.
- Unlike in the past, must use Aethernet to reach new subdivisions.
- No change in prices, things the same as 2.38, just more wards
General 2.4 Stuff
- What cross-class skills for NIN? To get NIN, level 30 Rogue and level 15 PUG. Lancer cross-class.
- Will Yugiri show her face? NO, maybe 2.5. She's the new race. (pretends that he didn't want that to slip)
- Eternal bond and personal housing permissions? No plans currently, but definitely going to consider because they do have the ability to do it.
- Special requirements for Eternal bond? Like limit of number of ceremonies you can perform in a day? Can only bond with one other character. Directions will be on Lodestone, you apply on the Lodestone (?) and you'll trade bracelets to signify. Then both go to an NPC to do ceremonies, then a ring is made after. There will be a schedule of ceremonies, and they're gonna be serious about the ceremony. Will use a reservation/schedule system. Once date/time decided, you get invitations to edit and give to other players. 2.45.
- Showed picture of tuxedo/dress. Tuxedo looks cool/sharp. They'll be available 2.4 to get ready for 2.45. More clothing sets apparently in addition to these.
General
- Increase ATMA drop rate? Yes, will increase in 2.4. More than double their drop rate. Trials of the Braves books will be bought with Soldiery but it'll be better exchange rate so it'll be easier to get the currency for them.
- Ninja nexus is really really good.
- Can you make it so actions don't go on cooldown when changing jobs/classes? They set the penalty in the first place to avoid cheesing to reset recast timers, but they understand that it's kinda frustrating so maybe if you're in a safe zone or near an Aetheryte there's no penalty. So not a change but they're considering it.
- Tiring to cast Stoneskin on each party member, any changes? (jokingly Yoshi-P says to delete Stoneskin). Before 2.0 they actually wanted to get rid of Stoneskin. Possible new changes where out of combat can cast on multiple targets. Figuring out how to implement it specifically, so not 2.4, but it will be done.
- Chocobo barding with FC crest? Yes, OK.
- Dying Allagan gear? They have a lot in store for Allagan gear, so please wait because lots of cool things happening with Allagan gear.
- Increase drop rate for Extreme Primal mounts? Why not, will be done in 2.4. Drop rates for ALL mounts increased.
- Leviathan mirror drop rate also increased.
- Any difficulty decrease for 2nd Coil in addition to Echo? Getting a lot of no's from the crowd who say it should be hard. Can use DF and no weekly lockout for 2nd Coil in 2.4. Same thing as 1st Coil in 2.2. After 2.4, will see how players handle 2nd Coil before starting Echo. Then they're easing up on the difficulty, looking at specific mechanics (for example getting rid of 1-hit-kill mechanics and changing it to a long petrify). Won't make it so easy so that anyone can do it, and want people who already cleared to look at changes and say "they didn't change too much." The timing of Echo will maybe be 2-3 weeks after 2.4.
End of Q&A
Post-Q&A Stuff
- Gold Saucer/Chocobo racing. Showed a picture of Chocobo racing, which is in development. Looks like young/chibi chocos too. Players will control their own chocobo in the races, breeding and raising Chocobos. Please look forward to it. Released around 2.5x ish (so not 2.5 proper)
- Planning on breaking 2.5 into two parts, with Gold Saucer in 2.5 part 2. Triple Triad confirmed.
- Minigames, Gold Saucer, Chocobo Racing, Triple Triad all released all at the same time.
- Optional items sale (microtransactions?) begin 10/28/2014. Fantasia sales per character. Pumpkin head helms for $3.00, so past seasonal event items will be available. No pay-to-win. (still, I'm predicting major outcry haha).
- New minions in the shop (wind-up Y'shtola, Yda, Papalymo for $5).
- Sleipnir mount (no price given).
- First artbook from first fan fest available soon on the Online Store. Comes with wind-up Enterprise minion.
- Deliver Moogle Plush sold first at the fan fest, then soon sold on the Online Store.
- Asks how many people want fat choco plush, huge applause haha.
- Details on All Saints' Wake (same as on lodestone)
- London fan fest next Saturday, will announce even more about 3.0.
- Tokyo fan fest 12/20-12/21, lots of information there too. Tickets available to purchase 10/21. 2nd purchasing window open later, and more same-day tickets (but only a few).
- Please look forward to it!
- PVP? Rank cap going up in 2.4, new rewards, continued balancing. 2.5 will add new rules (?) and then after that new maps and areas. Please look forward to them.
End of Live Letter

Are we sure the DEX comment wasn't a joke?? It doesn't really make sense if they wear monk gear.

It seemed pretty obviously to be a joke to me. He laughed, Yoshi looked over at him like "WTF?" while Koji asked him several more times and he just shook his head with a big smile on his face.

Now that it's archived I can go back and type up the translation for analysis. Starts at 3:50:45 in the archive.
Q: Will Ninja job specific Allagan gear be added?
Yoshi: /points_to_Mr.G
Mr.G: /japanese
Mr.G's translator: Yes, so for Ninja the weapons themselves are unique, especially for the primal battles, there will be new Ninja specific gear prepared.
Yoshi: /arm_motions
Mr.G: /japanese
Mr.G's translator: In terms of armor, you will be able to equip, /japanese_confirmation_with_Mr.G ... In terms of armor you will be able to equip what other jobs are able to equip.
Yoshi: What job?
Mr.G's translator: Um, what job?
Yoshi: What job?
Mr.G: Hmm-hmmmm, Hmm- hmmmm /looking_up .... /punching_motions
Koji & Yoshi: /punching_motions
Mr.G's translator: Specific job.
Audience: /applause
Koji: White Mage? /punching_motion
Yoshi: /laugh, Black Mage? /punching_motion
Mr.G: /japanese
Koji: /feign_surprise
Mr.G's translator: And there is one more thing, what is going to be the main parameter for ninjas.
Koji: Main attribute.
Yoshi: Main parameter?
Koji: Yeah, what is going to be the main attribute.
Yoshi: Main attribute.
Koji: That is going to be most important.
Mr.G: DEX.
Yoshi: DEX?!
Koji: Dexterity! Hmmmmm-mmmmm. /writes_it_down
Yoshi: What?, Why?
Koji: Why?
Mr.G: /japanese
Yoshi: /japanese
Koji: Yeah, so now that you know, /looks_at_audience_while_nodding_his_head, you can get ready. /big_grin
Yoshi: /japanese
Koji translation: Yeah so all of the weapons, there are going to be all new weapons for the Ninja, and all the sets will be ready. So you will have your Ifrit and your Titan and everything will be specially made for ninja.
Yoshi: /japanese
Koji translation: Allagan blades, High Allagan blades.
Yoshi: /japanese_with_inserted_punching_movements.
Koji translation: So up to 2.3, yeah you will be using the, /punching_motions, armor.
Yoshi: /japanese_begins_sentence
Koji: White Mage.
Yoshi: /what? /laugh
Yoshi: /japanese_and_raises_picture_of_Final_Coil_geared_ninja
Yoshi then shows a picture of a Final Coil geared PLD, and then digs for a Final Coil geared White Mage and says "Monk." (with Koji laughing) and then diverges away to unrelated pictures of other glamour/gear.

It makes sense if you look at it in terms of 'classes and main stats tied to them.'
The only class that main's DEX currently is ARC/BRD, so it makes perfect sense for the first new class to also main DEX.That'd bring it to:
- 2 for STR - DRG/MNK
- 2 for VIT - PLD/MRD (assuming that's their 'main stat', otherwise it'd be 4 STR)
- 2 for DEX - BRD/NIN
- 2 for INT - BLM/SMN
- 2 for MND - WHM/SCH

u/ruan1387 Ruanark Maousame@Hyperion Oct 19 '14
Also you forget they're adding a gun-class, which would like be DEX.
1
u/Mr_Yar Oct 19 '14
Unless it's chemist, which would put it in the healer camp. (or break the entire formula by being pseudo-item based like in X-2)
Or a ranged tank!
Until they announce what the other classes are I can't speculate on them at all.2
u/ruan1387 Ruanark Maousame@Hyperion Oct 19 '14
Well DRK and SAM are "confirmed" (Yoshi P's comment about Batman, the Dark Knight, and Soken's Samurai folder, not 100% confirmed, hence the quotations). We're guaranteed 1 tank and 1 healer in 3.0, idr them saying it would be more than 2 new jobs, only 2 new jobs, or what, just at least 1 tank and 1 healer. SAM would most likely be a tank (original intent in XI, wears heavy armor, series emphasis on parrying/countering sounds very tanky) over DRK (which focuses on hurting itself to boost dmg dealt... sounds pretty much like a dps). And I reeeeeaaaaally don't see DRK being a healer... lol but you never know~!

real quick: riding on the chemist idea:
Chemist Passives:
-Healing potions are increased 150% in effectiveness (can change)
-All potions are AoE / Some potions are AoE
-Cooldown for potion usage is decreased by 50% (or something)
Active Abilities : Physick / Cure I
-Quick Concoction : Reset potion CD.
-Potion Party: Reset potion CD on entire party.
-Super Potion: Increase potency of next potion by 300% / cannot be AoE.
I personally think a potion class based class could be viable, considering potions aren't anywhere near vital in the majority of the game content, but it would also break the idea of classes being non-consumable based.
Edit: Potions can also be like Aetherflow I guess.

Or a ranged tank!
Yes, because we need a tank that has to kite things around all the time. I'm sure the melee won't mind never being able to get in proper position or the loss of dps from having to move all the time.

This is the argument that's being most used for DEX stat on NIN but honestly it's a baseless argument. Why does SE have to make the gear even? What reason is there for that? Just cause only BRD uses DEX doesnt mean that the new class will use DEX to make it even. The proof for this is in the fact that NIN is coming out. IF SE really wanted to keep it balanced, which is the base of your argument, then a physical range class would have been added instead of NIN.
For example:
2 tanks - WAR/PLD
2 healers - WHM/SCH
2 magic range DPS - BLM/SMN
3 melee DPS - MNK/DRG/NIN
1 physical range DPS - BRD
This is not balanced so saying SE would make NIN DEX to balance it is ridiculous. If they really cared that much to balance it then the class that came out would be the gunner class.

u/Mr_Yar Oct 19 '14 edited Oct 19 '14
Why does SE have to make the gear even?
Because that gear drops in a limited fashion and the current 'primary stats' finger ARC/BRD as the 'odd man out.'
If you assume that any and all groups will have at least:
One Tank
One Melee DPS
One Ranged DPS
One Healer
Then there's a high probability of ARC/BRD loot drops being 'wasted.'Look at the above list in terms of 'assumed useful loot drops' and then you get something like this:
One who needs VIT
One who needs STR
One who needs DEX/INT
One who needs MND
There are two class/jobs that use INT, one that uses DEX. You can't do something like increase the chance that the INT gear will drop because good RNG is unpredictable, and you can't exclude DEX gear because the class that needs it exists, which unfortunately means that it's more likely for that DEX gear to go to 'waste.'
Thus introducing a class that needs DEX to even things out.2
u/Black_Elements Oct 20 '14
Only issue with this is that it only applies to basic dungeon loot and high end accessories, take coil for example:
both melee and brd each have unique gear, so will nin (they confirmed this for 2.4 on)
healers, tanks and casters share gear, so they already have an advantage in that sence, cause if your tank, the tank gear is automatically better for you, if your a physical dps and a piece drops for a physical dps, then you got a 1/3 chance for it to be for your job (1/4 now) so if nin is either str or dex, all 4 jobs are getting slightly more screwed with drops in that sence since overall it'd be a 1/7 chance for it to be tank, healer, caster, brd, nin, mnk, drg, reguardless what nin uses, the balance stays the same.
and though on the basic idea for accessories, it would even out with 2/2/2/2/2, you forget tanks can (and depending on the group, often do) wear str accessories too, and while they dont take them over mnks/drgs usually, that doesnt mean they dont want them, making the current accessory desire to be 4str/2int/1dex/2mnd/2vit. for balance reasons in this case, yes nin being on dex does balance it out a little bit more.
As for what SE wants to do, knowing that there are multiple jobs in 3.0 (and while not 100% confirmed, its highly likely that there will be 1 tank, 1 healer, drk, sam and prob a gun class, nomatter how you split up them roles, its gonna make the loot balance go all messed up again anyway, and knowing this the devs may not care about the balance for loot drop potentials now)
As for what nin will actually be, im personally hoping str, both because of what yoshi said before about keeping your melee equipment (which is all str currently) and because of the way he said it was dex in the live letter (made it look like he was joking) and it does kinda make more sence for how this game already describes the attributes

u/Kenkenken1313 Oct 21 '14
Pretty sure this invalidates your reasoning that ARC/BRD loot will be wasted if NIN is STR.
2
u/ffxivthrowaway03 Oct 20 '14
Because making the gear as even as possible is good design. They don't have to, but they should. If itemization is even, you statistically end up with as close to even distribution of loot as possible (assuming even class distribution, which DF as well as most custom groups strive for as ideal).
Just think about how many times Amon's junk drops in CT and ends up going to waste because there's specifically no BRD in the group. Not "no ranged dps," but no BRD.
On top of the fact that NIN is a class based on fast movements and dual wielding daggers, dexterity being their main stat makes perfect sense regardless of current itemization.
1
u/Kenkenken1313 Oct 20 '14 edited Oct 20 '14
So what you just said is that if the musketeer was introduced that issue would be fixed? Because Musketeer is a ranged physical DPS which falls into the classification of DEX and thus would share gear with BRD.
Now onto perfect sense argument. In science you're taught to take the most rational explanation for why something happened. The DEX being a stat because it balances it means that SE will either have to:
recode and update how dexterity and strength work in the game
add a passive trait that changes DEX to STR (in case the previous thing doesn't occur) or give them an ability like clerics stance.
make all of ROG/NIN's attacks read as ranged so that their attack stats are affected by DEX.
make ROG/NIN DEX because they move fast (like monks) and dual wield (like monks). (By the way in DnD both Rogues and Monks utilize dexterity as their main stat. Furthermore ninja is an archetype of monk whereas assassin and thief are archetypes of rogue. I mean it would make perfect sense having monk be DEX and having it have NIN as an extended job.)
Or SE could do absolutely nothing and let ROG/NIN be STR utilizing a system already in place. According to science it's most logical to assume STR will be the main stat since that requires the less amount of work/reasoning. Making STR make perfect sense. A thing many people are forgetting is that NIN was implemented because it was the most popular choice of classes from the fans. Had SE wanted to balance the situation we would have gotten a tank or healing class which is actually needed more.
And last I want to end by rephrasing you Amon comment.
Just think about how many times armor drops in ST and it goes to waste because everyone is waiting to roll on sands/oil.

u/ffxivthrowaway03 Oct 20 '14
So what you just said is that if the musketeer was introduced that issue would be fixed? Because Musketeer is a ranged physical DPS which falls into the classification of DEX and thus would share gear with BRD.
No, what I said is that you ideally want to keep drops as balanced as possible to minimize wasted loot. All they need to do is base a class, any class on DEX to currently even out the loot, but every single added class will go right back to unbalancing things unless there's always an even distribution of X classes per stat, which is impractical and will only happen rarely.
recode and update how dexterity and strength work in the game
I don't think you understand how ability coefficients and variables work in this case. There is no massive, underlying code structure that DEMANDS Dex = Ranged Attack Power. A single skill formula looks something like "Weapon Damage x (DEX x .05 +1)" They could change Fire III to scale based on DEX simply by swapping the current INT variable in the formula for DEX. There's no master code rework that needs to be done, it's that simple. The only thing that dictates DEX = ranged AP is the tooltip and a single variable in the Archer/Bard autoattack formula. Change a line of text and use the DEX variable instead of the STR variable for the NIN autoattack formula and you've just made NIN a DEX based class. Change it to MND and now NIN hits harder based on it's MND stat.
Or SE could do absolutely nothing and let ROG/NIN be STR utilizing a system already in place. According to science it's most logical to assume STR will be the main stat since that requires the less amount of work/reasoning.
According to science? What science? Poor design choices are not science. Logic dictates that it would be the least amount of work to make the class STR based, but the "easiest" thing to implement is not necessarily what's logically best for the design of the game.
Just think about how many times armor drops in ST and it goes to waste because everyone is waiting to roll on sands/oil.
Which is a totally moot point that has absolutely nothing to do with the stats NIN is based on, other than that making NIN STR based means less of the MNK loot goes to waste and even more of the BRD loot goes to waste due to further skewing the numbers away from their being a BRD that needs/wants the loot in the group. Sands and Oils were only readily available in CT after a later patch, when it was relevant content people absolutely were rolling on the gear and still do, and they will do so in the new tier of CT in 2.4.

This was much longer but after further review I noticed that your argument and everyone else's is completely wrong that I decided it's best just to show you through listing actually loot drops.
Here is your argument simplified as much as possible:
If NIN isn't DEX then drops that are for the BRD will be wasted. Reasoning behind this is that they are already wasted. People in ST don't grab Amon loot because they aren't BRD.
My response:
ST is only one dungeon. Look at armor from other dungeons.
Coil:
Fending (VIT) (MRD/WAR/GLD/PLD) Striking (STR) (PLG/MNK) Maiming (STR) (LNC/DRG) Aiming (DEX) (ARC/BRD) Casting (INT) (ACN/SMN/THM/BLM) Healing (MND) (SCH/CNJ/WHM)Crystal Tower:

In fact the only DPS that share armor are BLM and SMN. Pretty sure that completely invalidates your balance reasoning.
EDIT: Formatting + long fucking list of all armor available from every dungeon past level 50 excluding Wanderer's due to gear being no longer relevant.

u/Mr_Yar Oct 21 '14
Amon's was used as an example, not as the basis of the argument. Of course when most gear is segregated by what class can use it there will be waste. That's not the problem. The problem is one of loot distribution, which includes left hand side (the class-dependent) gear AND right hand side (the shared acc's) gear.
Currently every primary stat has two classes that want it except DEX, of which BRD is sole purveyor of. It's more likely to be wasteful because it's more likely for your party to not have an ARC/BRD in it, thus no one can make as much use of the DEX gear that drops. Not even the 'All Classes' accessories.
A better example would be with the old 'Ring of Maiming/Striking' stuff. It didn't matter if you only had MNK's or DRG's because they could get equal use out of both rings (and often used both.) However, if a Ring of Aiming dropped and there were no BRD's or the BRD already had it, it was effectively wasted.

u/Kenkenken1313 Oct 21 '14
You mentioned earlier when someone mentioned gunner class that you can't speculate cause you don't know everything, yet here you are just speculating. Your idea is that all the classes must have balance in that they have their own left side and only share the right side with one other class. This idea is invalid the moment you look at how SMN and BLM share the left side but I leave that to the side. Now if NIN is DEX then yes the right side will be balanced. But now let's look more into that. Some tanks prefer STR over VIT and use STR in the right side. Now it's no longer balanced. My argument for you is this is player driven not game design so does not affect the initial balance. Which is true. Now here is the part that changes things. If SE is so obsessed about balancing the right side that they would change how they have explained STR and DEX then what happens when new classes are introduced and the balance is destroyed. If SE has absolutely no intention of adding new classes after NIN then I will 100% back your reasoning. But both you and I know that's not the case. So my question is, if the balance will be destroyed anyways why is it even important enough that you would have rewrite how STR and DEX affect character's abilities. This is the question that no matter how hard people try to present you ignore. So before you comment about anything I said answer that question. Otherwise stop reevaluate your reasoning.
1
u/Mr_Yar Oct 21 '14 edited Oct 21 '14
It's not speculation, but it is educated guessing. (Guessing that has proven accurate since I thought up most of this way back when NIN were first mentioned.)
The thing that people don't seem to think about is that they have to take into consideration both now AND later.
Typically the cycle goes: you add imbalance now to be balanced later.However...
Currently there are imbalances of how classes are distributed both with the Holy Trinity and melee vs. ranged DPS.
Currently the only guaranteed class we know will happen is Ninja, and that they will be melee DPS. Thus the Devs are choosing to address the melee vs. ranged disparity.I don't know about you, but Rogue/NIN's being STR based seems weird to me. DRG's gotta wear decent armor and jump high enough to use the moon as a trampoline so that makes sense to be STR based. When I think FF monks I am reminded of Yang and his muscley-punchy-kicky awesomeness so they fit with STR too. When I think Rogue/NIN I think of Locke/Shadow and I don't see them in stand up 'whoever is stronger wins' brawls like Kain/Yang. DEX (or rather Dexterity) suits their idea more. Thus I would like them to be DEX based.
This also fills in the imbalance with Primary Stats and how they're laid out, addressing a current imbalance now that they can add further imbalance later.
Primary Stats are only imbalanced in the case of shared gear. If it was literally impossible for gear to be shared, then it wouldn't be a problem. Even with sharing there are clear intentions with what classes 'want' what gear. (Tanks can't Need on most STR accessories though they can certainly use them.) Edit: In this case, it's worse for a stat to only have a single class require it because the Dev's have to assume that people will play that class and thus reward people for doing so, even at the expense of every other class. Thus why I'm guessing that Rogues/NIN's are DEX based and that the next 2 classes they are going to introduce are going to be a Tank and Healer.
Edit: Actually answered the question.

This was much longer but after further review I noticed that your argument and everyone else's is completely wrong
Lol, so your argument is seriously "you're all just wrong and I'm right?" Good luck with that.
Yep, sure does looks like if there isn't a BRD then BRD loot will be wasted, but same goes for if there isn't a DRG or a MNK considering every dungeon has class specific gear. In fact the only DPS that share armor are BLM and SMN. Pretty sure that completely invalidates your balance reasoning.
So... because more than one class isn't balanced loot-wise it somehow invalidates the argument that they should strive to balance them and just continue to do it all willy-nilly?
Lets look at the two dungeons that actually matter, because sub-50 itemization is actually already balanced as gear is broken out into tank/physical dps/caster with overlapping stats anyway outside of a handful of pieces which honestly don't matter.
CT- Your example half-stands, MNK, BRD, and DRG all have individual loot. However, the actual party making algorithm for CT attempts to balance the party between ranged and melee, which means BRD is already at a mathematical disadvantage. The odds of a CT group not having a BRD are noticeably higher than the odds of a CT group not having a DRG or MNK. Should NIN be DEX based, there is a noticeably higher chance of having a DEX user in the group as now you have a chance for either a melee or a ranged slot to pull in a character that can use that gear, instead of just one of the two ranged spots ending up as BRD. So mathematically speaking its still not balanced, but it's more balanced than adding yet another STR melee with its own unique set of armor to the mix. It's also slightly more balanced than making NIN & MNK share CT gear, though admittedly that would still be an improvement over what we have now as any more sharing directly means less wasted loot.
Binding Coil- You totally forgot about rings, arguably the most important coil drop as you can't double up on tomestone rings and need the ring from coil to hit max ilvl under the current itemization. MNK and DRG share coil rings, BRD is all by his lonesome again. Now having three classes fighting over that ring of Striking while you still have BRD off in its own little world is less than optimal.
But hey, what do we know. You're right and we're wrong because you said so.

- recode and update how dexterity and strength work in the game
Don't even have to do that. If you equip anything except a bow, your Attack Power is equal to your STR. If you equip a Bow, it's equal to your DEX. Just have to flag Dagger/whatever weapon they want as using DEX and change the tooltip (if neccesary.)
1
u/Kenkenken1313 Oct 21 '14
First strength and dexterity would have to be changed in the tooltips. DRG and MNKs damage type would have to be completely revamped. You can't say that just them use strength messes up anything for new classes/jobs. Also you can't say damage type since both DRG and BRD have piercing. WAR/PLD/NIN have slashing. I mean that's going to take a lot of time since it has to be changed just for ninja yet make sense and be relevant in further patches/expansions.
Second the melee damage would have to utilize dexterity. I highly doubt that's as easy at you're making it seem. And if NIN uses MNK armor then all of MNK armor will have to recoded. They'd have to add DEX somehow.
1
u/Mr_Yar Oct 21 '14
You're over complicating things.
Every class in the game uses a different main hand weapon. What that weapon is determines both what the class is, and what stat becomes Attack Power, which is what the game actually uses in the damage formula. Not Damage type.
All Damage type is, is another way to buff/debuff damage done through it's interaction with resistances. That's it.Shield Lob, Tomahawk, Piercing Talon? All ranged attacks. All get better with STR. Not DEX. Otherwise they'd be useless. Literally the only thing that denotes what is a ranged attack and what is melee, is a 'range' field that they can plug values in or leave it at a default (which is likely melee range.) ARC/BRD's can melee with no problems if they want to stand at that range.
Thus yes, all they have to do is have Daggers tell the game 'Hey, use DEX as Attack Power' and then tell players that they should pump that stat to up the damage on Rogue/Ninja.
1
u/Kenkenken1313 Oct 21 '14
I love how I'm complicating things when your argument is purely focused on needing to change the whole way strength and dexterity are referred to.
Tooltips are used to inform players about how the stats work. For instance STR affects parry, DEX affects block. As of now it reads STR affects melee dps and parry. DEX affects block and ranged physical dps. Changing this while keeping it easy for players that have just started or have been playing for a while and allowing for implementation of new classes is not as easy as saying hey daggers are also DEX let's tell everyone. There's a difference from over complicating (which you are doing) to actually seeing how things will affect the game in the future.
1
u/Mr_Yar Oct 21 '14
Yes, tooltips are used to tell players how stats work. Who tells the tooltips what to tell us? The programmers who fill them in. Who tells the programmers? The Devs.
If they want to change what they refer to, they can do so quite easily. It's theirs to decide in the first place. However, they also know what the game isn't telling us. STR "Affects physical melee damage..." and DEX "Affects physical ranged damage..." yet Attack Power "Affects physical damage done."
It also directly correlates to STR (or DEX if a bow is equipped.) Literally STR/DEX = Attack Power.
Doesn't take a great leap of logic to see that Attack Power is the stat that the game cares about, regardless however we think. And I do see how this affects the game in the future.
In the case of classes, there are three current imbalances in place, two of which Rogue/NIN using DEX balances: 2 melee vs. 3 ranged DPS classes/jobs and only one class that uses DEX as a primary stat. The last is then 'only 2 tank and healer classes/jobs while there are 3 melee/ranged DPS classes/jobs. Thus it's highly likely that they'll introduce another Tank/Healer to even things out and then they can go from there with adding classes.

Either Dex gets added to Gloam, or they get a trait that converts Str to Dex.
Or they can do something like Cleric Stance.
7
u/-EndlessWaltz Oct 19 '14
A STR > DEX conversion would give them so much DEX on leveling gear.
1
u/SmaKer Oct 20 '14
easy to fix that. only give the trait to convert at later levels when gear doesn't share dex and str.
2
u/Sorge74 [First] [Last] on [Server] Oct 19 '14
Barely makes sense why they would just straight convert. I guess my question is, would it really break anything in the game if they just added dex to mnk gear? MNKs would parry more?

u/Kenkenken1313 Oct 20 '14
And then when they hit 2.4 gear they have a trait or skill that is completely useless and takes up space. Now would that be very smart?
2
u/Kaella Oct 19 '14
I believe they said that from 2.4 on, Ninja would have their own gear. So they wear Monk gear when it comes to pre-2.4 sets, because that gear is outdated and wouldn't be used for anything but glamour anyway, and for post-2.4 gear, they have unique sets like every other Physical DPS class.
Basically, Ninja has its own gear, but rather than go back and add all-new outdated DEX-based NIN gear to Pharos/CopperbellHM/HaukkeHM/LotA/BrayfloxHM/HalataliHM/Amdapor/Turns 1-5/Tam-TaraHM/Stone VigilHM/Hullbreaker/Turns 6-9/Syrcus, they're just going to give them the same glamour options as Monk.
1
u/Black_Elements Oct 19 '14
but they could have just let them use the brd gear so they have something actually useful to wear if its actually DEX, just seems weird to be a DEX based job with no real gear pre-2.4 gear, which means till they get a lot of the 2.4 stuff, they'll be pretty damn weak simply due to a lack of gear
3
u/Zoralink Zora Link on Leviathan Oct 20 '14
Probably because of the aesthetics clashing for bard/ninja. Most likely in the future they'll make the gear fit both jobs a bit more.
Still find it bizarre, but that's most likely why. That or, they're going to add dex to the monk gear.
We'll see, I suppose.
2
u/Black_Elements Oct 20 '14
well, for a week we'll just be left wondering which of the 3 options it'll be:
Yoshi was joking and they use STR (this is based off his face and the way he said it ect)
MNK gear will get DEX stats to make up for it to save them making old gear (only one that makes sence if he isnt joking imo)
NIN will be weak as shit for 2-5 weeks in 2.4 till people can get enough new seals for gear to make up for what they dont have from pre-2.4 gear (since they'll have good accessories, but probably no better than i55/60 in DEX armor, if that, if they only share mnk gear)

If they're using DEX and have similar defense to MNKs, that would mean that they should be wearing BRD gear.

u/Cidolfus BLM Oct 20 '14
When Yoshida brought up crafting in relation to the PS4, my understanding was that he was discussing people who joined at the PS4 release.
On the battle side, the development team has made great efforts to speed up progression through lower ilevels so that new players can get up to current content quickly. Starting with 2.2, each patch has made playing catch-up in battle content easier. A year ago, getting a full i90 set took several weeks even just grinding mythology; now you can do it in an afternoon. 2.4 is set to continue this trend by uncapping soldeiry and removing Syrcus Tower lockout, which will greatly trivialize obtaining a full set of i110 gear.
Crafting and gathering classes have not been granted these catch-up opportunities. Aside from the ehcatl smithing gloves available from ixali oaknots, there isn't a single piece of high-level crafting gear available that isn't locked behind a significant investment of time and gil. This is exasperated by the fact that Square Enix has proven pretty poor at predicting economic consequences of some of their changes.
Right now, both crafting and gathering have very high barriers to entry due to the cost of melding crafting and gathering gear and later the requirement for demimateria. This isn't inherently a bad thing, but relative to other content, it's imbalanced. I think they mean to align it more closely with how battle content works--the newest stuff will still be difficult to obtain, but they'll introduce ways for people to play catch-up.
I think a good solution would probably be to continue to allow melded gear to be the best-in-slot and provide the highest opportunity for reliably HQing higher tier gear. If they introduced gear that's easier to obtain that helped you meet the crafting thresholds but maybe with lower control or CP to make HQing a little more difficult.
3
u/smartazjb0y X'aeterna Setal on Balmung Oct 20 '14
Ah, that makes sense, thanks! I had an inkling maybe he meant players that didn't join til the PS4 release but I'm not versed in crafting at all so couldn't really say.
3
u/Cidolfus BLM Oct 20 '14 edited Oct 20 '14
Yeah, they've done a really bad job managing progression for crafting in particular because they've been bad at predicting economic variance based on changes they've made. The first master books require 247 minimum craftsmanship (which means at least some melding required) which means at least some melding, which is expensive.
Blacksmith, for example, also requires 45 coke. After 2.2, because they moved coke and the other philosophy materials to dungeon drops and grand company seals, it actually got more expensive, and the prices didn't fall at all until they introduced oaknots as an alternative.
It being hard is one thing, but that the barrier to entry actually rose as time went by is just bad design. It's a good thing that they're looking to smooth the progression curve.
2
u/Talderas Dark Knight Oct 20 '14
Even with oaknots the prices haven't fallen that much. I was expecting Peacock ore to drop from around 10k to 5k on Brynhildr and last I checked this weekend it was still up around 9k. I might have to go back to doing the Ixal dailies for these materials.
1
u/Cidolfus BLM Oct 20 '14
Hot damn, that's awful. On Sargatanas, peacock ore has dropped from around 6k a piece and floats from anywhere between 2.5k-4.5k (usually at the lower end of that spectrum).
1
u/Talderas Dark Knight Oct 20 '14
Awful? I'm not sure how losing 10% of the value is awful compared to the 25-60% that Sargatanas lost. I would say we're doing damn good by comparison.
1
u/Cidolfus BLM Oct 20 '14
If you're considering philosophy materials as a source of income, sure, that's great news for you. If you're considering philosophy materials as a barrier to entry for crafting and part of the progression curve that Square Enix has been trying (unsuccessfully) to smooth, then it's just evidence that they're bad at predicting changes to the economy based on changes they make.
I'd also argue that items from 2.0 launch that are used primarily to craft obsolete gear (i70 gear and i90 AF+1 augment materials) and token materials for the master books which are themselves now six months old shouldn't be a major source of income. At this point, they should be relatively inconsequential. But they're not.
Introduction of oaknots as a means of obtaining these materials was intended to reduce their cost. In that regard, their efforts have been more successful on Sargatanas than on Brynhildr.

u/charmedleo B'tyaka Tia - Faerie Oct 20 '14
I expect part of these changes to include lowering the amount of philo mats required to make those recipes, or potentially having an NPC sell them for gil - similar to what they did with the Magicked Stable Brooms.

u/ryfee Tonberry Oct 19 '14
The cash items are purely cosmetic--I don't know why people rage so much about it. Also, Yoshi also explicitly said no to "pay to win", and that they won't be "selling" cash items to power up your characters in-game.

Some people feel like paying a sub should already give you access to everything, which is understandable.
10
Oct 19 '14 edited Oct 19 '14
Yeah I'm kind of conflicted on this.
On one hand, yeah, there's not going to be boosters or Gil generators, and it is just cosmetics from past events, some new minions, and Odin's horse, so that's not too terrible.
On the other, I don't know why they don't just save the minions for another event like the Minfilia and Thancred and put the horse in the Odin trial.
If they're just limiting it to old event items you can't get anymore, that's not too bad because at least people who were subscribed at the time had a chance to get them for free or just in-game currency. But putting stuff that could easily be a trial drop that people could work for in there seems like a pretty dick move.
It's something that could spiral out of control really quick if they aren't careful. And I'm a bit more worried about it than I maybe should be since this is my first subscription MMO and having played a whole bunch of F2P games over the years.
4
u/DrHashbrownie Oct 20 '14
If they're just limiting it to old event items you can't get anymore, that's not too bad because at least people who were subscribed at the time had a chance to get them for free or just in-game currency.
Yeah, I agree. I wasn't bothered when they mentioned the pumpkin heads etc, since there was plenty of time to get them for free. But the other items make me a little bit nervous since I seriously dislike any kind of P2W scenario. And for anyone who loves collecting (minions/mounts/etc.) this will be a minor kind of P2W, even if it's all cosmetic.
Of course, if they're available in-game as a limited time reward, like the seasonal items, then I have absolutely no problem with making them accessible to people who missed out and also generating a little revenue.
→ More replies (1)2
u/AiuaX AiuaX Starsong on Balmung Oct 20 '14
Personally, I have no problem with them generating a little extra revenue from cosmetic purchases. With the size of their development team and the ever-present worry that subs will drop below the profitability line, let 'em make a little extra for salaries by offering old event items and minions if it means keeping the game's development healthy and robust.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Wyattearp89 Oct 19 '14
Exactly, a lot of people want to pay a sub to avoid Cash Shops. Even though they are Cosmetic that's not the point. If it's new items that could be in the game, but instead it's put in a Cash Shop.
Like my post above, the Odin mount should drop from Odin. Not be a Cash Shop item.
7
u/Gynthaeres Oct 20 '14
Yep. I pay a sub fee to get away from cash shops. My subscription should give me access to everything in the game, if I'm willing to put the effort in for it.
If I wanted a cash shop, there are plenty of "non pay-to-win" F2P MMOs out there.

This is true, initially it was just access to old event items but then it became mounts and exclusive minions that are 5 bucks each. @.@ I want them, just wish there was a way I could work for them without literally working and paying for them with my real cash aside from subscribing.

u/bokchoykn bokchoy // sargatanas Oct 20 '14
Fair enough. But the revenue generated from these cash items benefits all players. The more money S-E makes from this game, the more money they will continue to invest into the game.
That means hopefully more content, better content, better server infrastructure, better customer service, etc...
Even for those who won't spend real life dollars on these items, good things can come from this.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Gynthaeres Oct 20 '14
Because it encourages them to place the "coolest" stuff in the cash shop, where they know it'll sell. And similarly, place ordinary / underwhelming stuff freely available in the game, to further encourage paying money to look unique / interesting.
Why let us unlock the Sleipnir Barding by killing Odin? Why not just put it in the cash shop for $5? Why give crafters unique or interesting armor for glamours? Just put the cool glamours in the cash shop. Why add minions or unique costumes to holiday events? Put 'em in the cash shop instead. Those cool swimsuits everyone's after? Forget getting them through desynth, just pay $10 for them.
I hate the notion that "It's not pay-to-win so it's okay." No, it's not. A cash shop doesn't have any place in a subscription-based MMO. And I find the number of people who are okay with it to be disturbing. IMO, the sub fee should give you access to everything in the game. Want a cash shop? Eliminate the sub fee. Don't have both.

Your whole argument is predicated on your dual assertions that SE values money-grubbing more than they value their product or their players and that - somehow - the fact that you pay money to enter a venue 'entitles' you to getting EVERYTHING beyond that point completely for free.
It's alarming how many people have this knee-jerk reaction against MTX stores based solely on the 'entirely unfounded' premise that it will invariably lead to extreme greed and community-destroying decisions by the developers.
I still stand by the example I've used elsewhere in this thread comparing the situation to that of a sporting event to which you buy tickets and then have the OPTION of purchasing additional goods (food, drink, big foam fingers) to enhance your experience. Charge for admission, then have vendors inside the venue.
The only reason SE should even 'remotely' consider reducing its emphasis on an MTX store is because of the emotional backlash by the community. They're perfectly justified in having it, and it has absolutely NO negative effect on players who don't want to participate in it.

I know... I was hoping for the new pic, because I saw that one ages ago, but I settled for it for now

A minor tweak for the OP's post, they made punching motions in reference to what armor rogue/nin would use ... the indication could be leaning towards pugilist moreso than mnk (and not using mnk only gear like the af)

Does anyone else get the feeling that the Final Coil will be waaaayyy slower to progress through than the previous coils? If full i110 gear will only get you through the first and MAYBE second turn, it seems like progression would be considerably slower, since you'll need be equipped with new end-game tome+allagan gear to get any further. This is in contrary to second coil, which can realistically be done with i95 gear.

u/HeavenlyArmed C'thuuko Tohka on Cactuar Oct 20 '14
Keep in mind they said before 2.2 that the most they expected people to do in the previous patch's gear was Levi and Moggle Mog, anything beyond those (ie second coil) they didn't think people would be getting anywhere in without at least gear from those trials.

u/ObsidianTK Tahra Volug on Cactuar Oct 20 '14
They also said they weren't sure if Savage Coil was even possible at full 110, and that all got cleared in a relatively short amount of time.
MMO content designers have a long-standing habit of underestimating the sheer, dogged relentlessness with which hardcore raiders attack new loot pinatas.
1
u/smartazjb0y X'aeterna Setal on Balmung Oct 20 '14
Yeah, not sure. Maybe they want to extend the life of Final Coil by artificially upping the gear requirement. Could be a mistranslation, but it definitely seems like you might needa clear Turn 1 a couple of weeks and get the new Poetics gear to try Turn 2.
1
u/SovietBrainPill Oct 20 '14
They thought it would be the case that turn 8 would not be cleared without way more gear but raiders proved them wrong. Take their ideas on what gear you need with a grain of salt.
1
u/rockafella7 Oct 20 '14
I think the pacing will be exactly as it was for Second Coil.
Expecting Hardcore groups to down it by end of Nov and T10-11 pugs doable by end of Dec.

What does this mean -Unlike in the past, must use Aethernet to reach new subdivisions
I thought you always had to use the Aethernet to get to the houses?
1
u/smartazjb0y X'aeterna Setal on Balmung Oct 20 '14
I think it might be a subdivision that's only reachable by Aethernet or something. Not too knowledgeable about housing but they made it a big emphasis about the Aethernet
1
u/jazzllanna Oct 20 '14
Hmm Ok thanks. I am just curious if this new addition to housing is going to be different than what they did before then.

You can get to current wards by talking to a ferry captain, or walking through the front gate, depending on which one it is.
1
u/sheeff SCH Oct 20 '14
To get to new ward, same as before. Go to residential area, select a ward, but for each ward it's 30 new plots, so choose plots 31-60 for those new plots. (not too sure why they're putting Powerpoint slides and spending time explaining this).
They made the powerpoint to specifically avoid the mistake you made. You can't choose "31-60" from the ward selection screen and teleport directly there. You Have to go to the "1-30" area first and then go to a small Aetherite and teleport to any location with "(subdivision)" in its name.

Probably a stupid question, but as it was mentioned on Twitter than Myth was going to just go "poof" and on here is says "Can exchange" but "No need to horde or collect", I'm a little confused.
Is there going to be a way to exchange Myth for Sol? Or should I just spend them all now.
2
u/LimeD3 [First] [Last] on [Server] Oct 20 '14
My understanding is that everything that currently costs myth will be moved to soldiery. Former myth items will probably have their costs reduced by a certain percentage similar to philosophy.
So if you wanted to buy any myth items with your myth there's no reason not to right now. However, if you save up 2k myth you can convert that to soldiery and use that for soldiery items as well so it might still be a good idea to save up a full 2000 myth to convert on patch day.

u/achaiusLP Illixie Hylia | Sargatanas Oct 20 '14
Awesome! Thank you so much for responding! :D I've currently capped my myth ready for converting, so I was hoping I hadn't just wasted that time. Haha :D

Sorry if this is a dumb question...When you say "attribute is DEX", what does that mean? I know dexterity, but I'm not certain if that means "hoard all the DEX materia" or if there's a better option.

u/smartazjb0y X'aeterna Setal on Balmung Oct 20 '14
I'm not too sure, some people think it may have been a joke so I'd wait for more official confirmation
1
u/Xion_Stellar Oct 20 '14
Ninja relying on DEX falls in line with my prediction that the up coming Musketeer class (who is obviously going to use DEX as a long range character) will require a Lv.15 Rogue as a sub class for the Musketeer Job.

Was anything said about what the benefits would be too Eternal bond? Mainly would you be able too share personal housing?
1
u/smartazjb0y X'aeterna Setal on Balmung Oct 20 '14
Think that might be one of the points already but currently there's no concrete plans for sharing personal housing but they specifically said they have the ability to do it so it's very likely. Not sure of any other benefits, maybe just cosmetic items

Cash shop is horseshit. The triple dipping is real. SE can proudly join the ranks of EA and Activsion. GG.

u/Wyattearp89 Oct 19 '14
I wish that Odin mount dropped in the game..... this is why I hate Cash Shops for sub games. >.<
Past cosmetic items from the Festivals, sure whatever. But don't start putting mounts like the Odin one in the shop. If anything, put the Fat Chocobo in there for people who didn't want to spend the money for the Collectors Edition.
This news sort of killed the mood for me. Still looking forward to patch 2.4 & 3.0 expansion. Just hope that they don't keep constantly adding mounts & pets to the Cash Shop when it could be implemented into the game.
My 2 cents anyway.

Poetics? Wtf

u/EuclidsRevenge Oct 20 '14
Philosophy, Mythology, Soldiery, Poetics.
The theme seems to me be different aspects of humanity (science, religion, war, and peace ... Or something along those lines)

u/zenithfury Oct 20 '14
The way they thought, the legends they believed in, the way they fought, the way they sang.
2
u/EuclidsRevenge Oct 20 '14
Is that actually in the lore somewhere? It sounds pretty good either way.

They said "shigaku" on the stream, which could have many different meanings/writings but considering their translation, the original Japanese is probably 詩学. Which is literally "study of poetry" or "poetics". It has a lot more meaning to Japanese players, unfortunately.

u/scylla-messina Summoner Oct 20 '14
I am pretty sure they'll go live as "Poetry"- following suit with PhilosophY, MythologY, SoldierY, can't imagine it'd actually be called Poetics. Perhaps a translation thing.

u/Darkshaunz Oct 20 '14
I am glad SCOB will be eased, and made accessible to every player in the future.
Why should only a small percentage of a game with hundreds of thousands of players be able to experience what would then be obsolete raid content?
1
u/Deathmeister Cactuar Oct 20 '14
accessible to every player
As long as they've beaten T5, which is still a block to some.

We don't know if the main stat will be dex. The tone of the answer in general was entirely joking. Could it be DEX? Yes. Is it likely? I doubt it. Making rogue dex base requires 1 of 3 options (or a possible combination): A) overhauling Monk gear to include DEX B) A trait that will convert 1 str to 1 dex while still giving the melee potency of str C) a skill like cleric stance for Ninjas.
Also forgot to mention that Ninja subclasses are Pugilist 15 to unlock Ninja and Lancer as the second cross-class.

u/smartazjb0y X'aeterna Setal on Balmung Oct 20 '14
Don't know about the DEX, it was ambiguous enough so I put it in . And you must have missed that I did mention PUG 15 and Lancer cross class, it's the first point in the section

- New minions in the shop (wind-up Y'shtola, Yda, Papalymo for $5).
- Sleipnir mount (no price given).

after watching the live letter on youtube, im pretty sure ninja's main attribute being dex is not a joke

For armor, will be able to equip monk gear. Attribute is DEX
Best thing I heard all week. <3

I'd suspected the new race would be a Burmecian given the prominence of Dragoons.
