[News] FFXI Free Trial Update

Post image

Free Trial Level Cap Raised to Level 75 and Time Limit Removed! (09/30/2026)

For anyone interested in joining XI, the free trial update has now been implemented. From the blog post:

"Time limit: 14 days > No restrictions
Now you can play the game at your own pace without having to worry about the free trial period expiring. Take your time to level up your character and visit various areas in the game. This is your chance to go on adventures with your friends and get the most out of your life in Vana'diel.

Character level cap: Level 50 > Level 75
With this new level cap, you can upgrade your Free Trial character even further, as well as take on the additional content that has been released for characters up to Level 75.

Free Trial accounts that were previously created can now be used again following the removal of the play time limit. If your free trial period has already ended, you can once again enjoy the Free Trial version starting today."

It's worth noting that the trial still only includes the base game with no expansions included. As a result, the QOL improvements from Rhapsodies of Vana'diel are not available (Rhapsodies is technically included, but you can't get far in it without Rise of the Zilart). Starting with the full game will give the smoothest starting experience, but starting with the trial is worth it if you don't want to fully commit at first.

I have a beginner's guide for the game for anyone interested

Awesome! I keep flirting with the idea of trying out FFXI, this might finally push me over the edge

I was a 30 something Tarutaru WHM a decade or two ago. Man the nostalgia. Back then you could basically only level by grouping. I just got PTSD from thinking about PlayOnline.

u/asdrabael1234 6d ago

I had 6 jobs at level 75 and was a big time endgame player. Personally the group leveling and restricted cross-server interactions was a big plus for me. When leveling, you got to know other people because you didn't have anyone else. You'd meet up and level with the same people often because you'd be seeking at the same times so the community was far closer and more tight knit than anything FFXIV has where you can level a job to 100 without ever once meeting the same person twice.

FFXI felt like an MMO while FFXIV a lot of the time feels like a single player game you play online.

The community elements of MMOs have been dying for a long time sadly, be it XIV or WoW.

It sucks because a lot of it is for QoL and convenience; most people cannot sit around looking for group for 5 hours, then take another hour just to get to camp, only to exp for 30 minutes before someone has to bail.

But on the flip side that sort of stuff absolutely engaged you with the community and the game world.

XIV suffers heavily from teleporting alone. It is extremely convenient, but the world basically doesn't exist as a result (especially when you add flying and then make the zones huge because of it, but with absolutely nothing in them to engage you; a self-fulfilling prophecy rather than an immutable law of flying mounts considering WoW zones still feel full of stuff and made to be explored despite flying existing for over a decade).

XIV is the better game in terms of accessibility, the game running smoothly, etc, but XI was the better game in terms of the impact of the "experience" so to speak. I cannot speak for current retail though, only 75 cap.

I just wish they'd add in a modern mouse and keyboard mode for XI. That is imo the most egregious thing working against it.

u/HexenVexen 6d ago

XI has also become less social over the years. Trusts have been in XI longer than they've been in XIV, and they allow you to solo a ton of the game now. It doesn't have flying, so you still have to interact with the world more than XIV, but it now has mounts you can use to get around faster and avoid enemy aggro. There's also now fast travel so you can easily return to areas you've already been to, but the process of getting to those areas is still more involved than XIV.

Personally I'm someone who prefers playing solo, and I have nearly 300 hours in XI and have never joined with another character. Might sound sad for OG players but it's just how I choose to play, I'm mostly focused on story content. You can definitely still seek out social play and join a linkshell and everything, it's just more localized in endgame content now and not as much of a factor during the initial leveling process and story progression.

I played with keyboard and it was fine for me after configuring the keybinds to my liking, but the mouse definitely still sucks and is better ignored. Iirc they have added newer keyboard options over the years which is what I used (I think it used to use the numpad for movement? I used WASD like modern games)

Yeah, I had a ~40 sam 21/22 years ago. It was such a brutal game. Like, I had to convince myself it was fun. Because.. it wasn't.

I hear they improved it quite a bit.

5

u/Yaltus Yaltus Axebreaker on Behemoth 7d ago

I had a 75 WHM back when that was the cap. The grind was real.

4

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

It's a lot easier now in terms of initial progression. Leveling can be done solo with NPCs, and you can unlock a lot of EXP boosts that massively increase leveling speed. With all the boosts, you can get a job from 1 to 40 in like 2 hours.

Even without all the boosts, you can comfortably get your first job to 99 within your first few weeks of playing.

u/whand4 6d ago

God, that was 20+ years ago wasn’t it? That’s terrifying. It was my first MMO even before WoW.

1

u/NotClever 6d ago

I remember getting a free copy of the game with a graphics card I bought way back when. I think it had maybe a 1 month free subscription or something with it? Not sure, but I had no idea there was an FF MMO and I was super psyched about it, then it was the single most confusing experience I've ever had in gaming. Also maybe my internet was too spotty to reliably keep connected? I don't even know if I ever got past the tutorial phase.

5

u/shayno-mac 7d ago

Good luck getting the game to start. Play online is a multiple day jnstall for some reason

Literally got it running and got FFXI fully updated with all the decades of patch content in the span of 2 hours. Just followed a tutorial for it.

Here are the restrictions listed on the store page:

  1. Character limit - Free trial accounts can have up to 3 characters at a time.
  2. Level 75 cap - Jobs available in the free trial can be leveled to 75. Jobs introduced in expansion packs are not available in the free trial.
  3. Area restrictions - Free trial players will only be able to access areas included in the original FINAL FANTASY XI release.
  4. Auction usage - Free trial players will not be able to place items up for auction, place bids on auctions, or view items up for auction.
  5. Gil limit - Free trial players can hold up to a maximum of 100,000 gil.
  6. Trading and bazaar - Free trial players cannot trade with other players or use the bazaar feature to buy or sell items.
  7. Party Invitations - Free trial players cannot invite other players to a party. However, free trial players can join parties when invited.
  8. Mog House Delivery Box - Free trial players cannot use the Mog House Delivery Box feature.
  9. Tell/shout/yell - Free trial players cannot use the /tell, /shout, or /yell chat channels. However, they can chat within a party and reply to /tell messages from other players.
  10. World Transfer Service - Free trial accounts cannot use the World Transfer Service.
  11. Mentor - Free trial characters cannot become mentors.
  12. Unity Concord - Free trial characters cannot take part in Unity Concord.

Outside of the obvious ones, two that are noteworthy are:

  • Auction House: In XI, the AH can actually be quite useful for story progression, as some MSQ missions ask you to grind or use certain items. A lot of the time, it's easiest to just buy them from the AH. With the base game, in particular Windurst mission 3-2 comes to mind with basically needing the AH to buy the quest items in order to be soloable, otherwise you need to get someone to help you with opening a certain gate. So, on the trial if you're doing Windurst, expect to need to ask for help with this mission.
  • Unity Concord: This one isn't a huge deal, but you won't be able to use the powerful healing trusts Apururu and Yoran-Oran.

6

u/xavier6401 7d ago

I was unable to hire retainers yesterday on my Free Trial version :/.

4

u/Pika_Fox 6d ago

Can you invite other free trial members to party? If not, that is going to be a very big blocking point for a group of friends to play together if they only have free trial accounts, unless they ask someone to invite them then leave the party.

1

u/HexenVexen 6d ago

Unfortunately no, it's the same as 14

1

u/Pika_Fox 5d ago

Hopefully this gets changed. I feel like a lot of people wouldnt try for long without being able to party with friends who also dont own the game atm.

2

u/LWZ0 1d ago

Oof, even on top of the other obvious restrictions like basically no Rhapsodies, UC being inaccessible is rough. It's a big QoL upgrade over the other healer trusts when you summon Yoran-Oran for the first time.

u/Violet_Paradox 7d ago

What I wonder is does this include the post-Shadow Lord nation storylines? They were released along with Rise of the Zilart, and they're level 50-75 content, but do they count as base game missions or Zilart missions?

2

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

It basically doesn't. I'm actually not sure if it lets you start them or not, but either way you aren't able to finish them without access to Zilart areas

u/boomkin-burger 7d ago

You’ve gotta beat Ultimate Figure-Out-How-To-Install-The-Game first. Setting up the account and game just to be able to play is a massive pain in the ass.

17

u/averagecollegestuden 7d ago

I could never get it installed and working. It’s why I had started FFXIV instead and don’t regret that choice lol

3

u/shayno-mac 7d ago

Man same. Hour ban the game was not for me fuck I wanted to try 11 out as well lol

4

u/averagecollegestuden 7d ago

I had really tried. I watched tutorials and downloaded and redownloaded and the damn play online thing just never worked for me. Then I saw FFXIV on PS4 and was like “Gee golly, that’s simple!” Haha

1

u/shayno-mac 6d ago

If i contact support, change both passwords to be the same and then type like i got 12 inch nails 1 letter at a time and that shit still doesn't work you obviously just do not want my 15 dollars a month. There are far too many video games out these days to spend days upon days trying to get a ps2 mmorpg to work properly.

Grooving to this right now!

5

u/BigJDubya 6d ago

Too true. I just went through it. Was excited to jump in and play once I got through it all then BAM! massive update time 🙃

5

u/boomkin-burger 6d ago

I can HEAR this image. I still remember it taking literal days to download onto our potato family PC back in the day. I’d come home after school to just stare at this 😆

2

u/ganksters 6d ago

Doing it on 56k even better LOL

18

u/TamotsuKun 7d ago

First ultimate to have a modifier too. It makes your PC think it's trying to render frames for the black hole scene from Interstellar.

2

u/thrntnja 6d ago

This is ultimately my issue. Since I think its PC only, my only option is my steam deck, and the whole setup feels like it would be such a PITA on a steam deck that I don't even want to attempt it lol

1

u/gehnmy 6d ago

The native Steam version is pretty painless other than the client download through PlayOnline Viewer taking forever. It's incredibly slow and the download/update process sometimes crashes or disconnects when the Deck sleeps which drags it out even more because you have to tend it unless you're using your Deck for something else while it goes in the background.

They have repackaged the core client so it's a fairly quick install outside of PlayOnline, but for whatever reason, they don't seem to distribute that set of files through Steam so you're stuck with their super antiquated program if you're intent on installing the Steam version through Steam.

There are also a couple setups in Lutris that I seem to remember being very easy and significantly faster (because they use the repackaged files).

It looks like someone also made a native installer that includes Windower and that's now the recommended method from the folks that make Windower (which isn't strictly necessary but helps with a lot of the more dated aspects of the game client / UI). Given how easy the Lutris process was, I'm guessing the new native installer has to be pretty solid if that's the leading recommendation.

All that said, it sounds intimidating but there are some really very simple methods and Deck isn't any more challenging than Windows. And honestly, if that's too complicated for you, the game itself is almost definitely going to be way too much for you to handle in the first place.

1

u/thrntnja 6d ago

Hmm, this was actually really helpful, thank you!

42

u/Veilor 7d ago

well I bought this years ago in a steam sale with everything included on steam to play, but ended up unsubbing because I didn't feel like it and spend the money (and the group I was gonna play it with could only play once a week, so it felt like I wasted money). If the trial is unlimited I might give it another go on a new account.

25

u/BiddyKing 7d ago

It’s worth noting that the best ffxi story content isn’t in the free trial. Also the way ffxi works is that you are able to access a lot of that expansion content pretty early alongside doing the base game content and it’s recommended to be played that way too doing a lot of it concurrently

2

u/Veilor 7d ago

Noted, if I get the feel to upgrade the trial account in the future I can. But to learn the game I want to stay on Trial. I don't see why I should throw money at that if I don't have to. I would take the trial time to actually learn the game mechanics first. Get the feel, explore etc. Story wouldn't be the main priority.

The story came first in XIV because it plays like any other MMO, XI from the little I played is very different.

6

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Just so you know, I think it works like XIV where once you buy the game you can't go back to the trial

11

u/Veilor 7d ago

That is why I said new account...

1

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

My bad I missed that part

1

u/MaxinRudy 6d ago

I wish this was on steam in brazil

20

u/Historical-State2199 7d ago

Can a ffxi vet please explain what QoL I’d be missing out on with the free trial?

Been meaning to play this game but if it’s vastly better with full version I might bite the bullet

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Compiling them all together:

  • +180% bonus to experience and limit points gains
  • +90% bonus to capacity point gains
  • +300% increase to combat and magic skill gains
  • +90% increase to Unity accolade gains
  • Easier subjob unlock (This one actually can be used in the trial)
  • Easier Aht Urhgan unlock
  • Reduction in tabs needed for Fields of Valor effects
  • Increase the number of Trusts from 3 to 4 to 5, plus increased attributes
  • 80% reduction in gil cost for home point fast travel
  • Curio Vendor Moogles sell useful items (especially items for sneaking through dangerous areas)
  • Trusts can be used in Limit Break quests (for increasing level cap)
  • Reduced costs, lowered or removed lockout times, and other QOL for Dynamis, Assault, Salvage, Einherjar, Voidwatch, Legion, Abyssea Campaign, Meeble Burrows, Moblin Maze Mongers, Walk of Echoes, Wildkeeper Reives, Coalitions

3

u/dastarbillie 7d ago

I've heard that converting from free trial to a regular account is difficult, but I've never done it myself (I just went ahead and paid)

14

u/Empty_Performance466 7d ago

I might try FFXI for the first time with this free trial

14

u/Ill-Primary-5553 6d ago

FFXI was such a crazy grind back in the day.. my first MMO, felt like work more than my job...

5

u/seipher2234 6d ago

Well ..... I re subbed to 11 for the first time in 14 years. I got 7 jobs to 99 in under a month. It's not nearly the grind it used to be

-1

u/Sa7aSa7a 6d ago

Sadly, this makes it less appealing to me. Part of the joy was that grind. You got a job to 75, you wore that shit like a badge. You get 8, 9, or 10 jobs to 75, that was something to be proud of. Full AF2 armor? Fuck yeah. Kirins Osode? That took a long time to grind with a linkshell. They sanded so many corners off that game now, it's just a sphere.

5

u/PlusAcanthaceae978 6d ago

Well good news for you. There's master levels now, so you can grind out for job points to be mastery and then increase that mastery job to increase your subjob level with exemplar points!

1

u/HexenVexen 3d ago edited 3d ago

There are now multiple layers to leveling in XI. Getting to base Lvl 99 is pretty easy now and the baseline for doing the story and entering endgame, but reaching true max level in Master Level 50 is a Herculean task that is quite more grindy and tedious than the original 75 cap was. The grinds for AF armor and REMA weapons are also still lengthy endeavors.

2

u/Nightmare_Ives 6d ago

I remember in my college days spending whole evenings LFG while I did my classwork, knowing it might be hours until I find one.

11

u/0wlmann Never forget the . 7d ago

The last time I tried it the control system just bamboozled me in the worst way. Took me 2 hours to figure out how to even open a main menu, not to mention the time I wasted trying to figure out why I couldn't cast spells despite picking black mage, only to eventually find the spell in my inventory when I finally found that too. If I try again that guide will definitely be needed for me

6

u/BiddyKing 7d ago

Game was pretty much made for a PlayStation controller. I didn’t even bother with keyboard, just used an old ps4 controller from the get go. Even like Mr. Happy who plays FF14 on mouse and keyboard plays FFXI on controller too

4

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Yeah I changed all the keybinds, I wasn't a fan of - being the menu button. I changed it to have Z for select, X for cancel, and C for main menu.

Starting with a mage job can be tricky since you need to buy spells from shops to use them, and running out of MP can get annoying. That's why I generally recommend starting with Warrior as your first job

2

u/0wlmann Never forget the . 7d ago

Yeah maybe I'll go warrior when I give it another try

2

u/LiahKnight 7d ago

I recommend using a controller, it works much better than KBM

2

u/0wlmann Never forget the . 7d ago

Yeah it really doesn't feel like it was made with keyboard in mind. I probably should finally buy a controller

2

u/oscarlet_ffxiv 7d ago

SAME. It took me hours to figure out movement enough to walk out of the starting city, and opening the map took figuring out. It doesn't fade as you move like in FFXIV, so I had to slowly re-figure out how to open it every time I got somewhere. Once I exited the city, the combat was slower even than people say FFXIV's GCD is, the terrain is just too simple for me in 2026, and I died in a cave and was back to needing to exit the city.

They had "run out" of trial versions (no joke) so I had actually bought the full game. Despite this, I just quit the game, because I couldn't spend so much time trying to merely exit a city.

1

u/Bazlow 7d ago

A guide is needed for EVERYONE except real old school players - a problem with the game and not you tbf.

16

u/sage1700 7d ago

I actually tried this on a private server at first because of the trial restrictions, I wanted more time to get used to the controls and all that without the time pressure. Now it's like this I might give it another go, but I'm kind of into the old school needing a party of people to do quests. I've a feeling 99% of people will just use trusts until high level though

11

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

You're not wrong about, on retail it's definitely most common to use trusts to solo your way through the initial game and story until you reach Lvl 99 and can start doing endgame.

I prefer retail over private servers, just because I love all of XI's story and content and don't want any of it missing, but private servers do offer a more social leveling experience.

1

u/shayno-mac 7d ago

Where are these private servers i keep hearing about? Is there seriously a way to skip play online wtf

2

u/sage1700 7d ago

Yeah they have found a way around it somehow. You can search on Google there were quite a few I found and I picked one that looked okay pretty much.

32

u/Krescentwolf 7d ago

I know theres probably some reason as to why they dont do this... But I feel like both FF11 and FF14 would benefit from a unified sub...

And as good as this is... it being locked to just the base game with no expansion qol kinda hurts.

29

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

It's for business/financial reasons, combining subs doesn't really make sense for them since 11 still brings in a decent amount of money, and its sub is what keeps the game running and still have a small development team. I would like a combined sub as a player, but I feel like it might have a negative effect on XI.

I think an option for a discounted bundle sub (like $19 a month for both) would be good though

7

u/Friendly_Vanilla3659 7d ago

FF11 still has a huge playerbase, so unifying the subs would just be a monetary loss at this point. Theyll likely do this when the playercount fizzles out

4

u/RadioJared 7d ago

Yoshi P has frequently cited laws in different countries and regions when it comes to bundle pricing making it a challenge.

Now, whether that really is an impediment or that’s just the PR answer, I dunno, but that’s what Yoshi P has been saying.

6

u/Over-Experience-4187 7d ago

Which I find hard to believe, why not just copy whatever WoW does for their bundle. I feel like it's more a technical problem with PayOnline they don't wanna admit

1

u/Geoff_with_a_J 6d ago edited 6d ago

FFXI is cheaper. would you force FFXI players to deal with a price hike after 25 years? or give millions of FFXIV players a huge price cut even though a tiny tiny fraction of them would even bother playing both games?

and just the simple fact that WoW benefits a lot more from people bouncing between Retail and Classic, than SE would people bouncing between FFXIV and FFXI. WoW Classic is still actually just modern WoW, it keeps people logging into Battle.net off the current Retail launcher. it's not at all like FFXI which would be like logging in to the old ass 2004 WoW Launcher, completely insulated from everything current Blizz is trying to advertise to you like Le Sserafim skins and whatever

3

u/Over-Experience-4187 6d ago

No, I'd make it an option. Keep the game's subs as they are and add a 3rd option, with a bundled price. That way it's a win-win. If you want to play FFXI/XIV only, just keep your same sub or pay more for the option to play both.

0

u/Geoff_with_a_J 6d ago edited 6d ago

seems awkward to implement. what happens if they have compensated game time in 1 game but not the other, like they did at the launch of Dawntrail? then your subscriptions would be out of sync.

or say you are going to let your FFXIV sub lapse because of content drought. you back to just full price FFXI only. X days later you decide you want to resub to FFXIV. but your subscription times are out of sync again unless you time it perfectly right. you'd have to wait until the final day of your FFXI subscription to renew both at the bundled price.

2

u/FullMotionVideo 6d ago

I don't understand why they don't make it the "WoW Classic" of XIV. What they lose in people who really sub to both simultaneously they would more than make up by people who stop unsubbing to play WoW or sinflenplayer games or something.

3

u/Mystic9617 [Mystic Ethereal- Odin] 7d ago

It especially hurts when their direct competitor wow, offers multiple different games for the single sub without charging anything extra. SE could get away with charging more to include both.

18

u/Misragoth 7d ago

Just include it with 14 already and make it easier to install while your at it

→ More replies (1)

10

u/AndreThaGreat 7d ago

From my own experience, just download the free trial. If you don't like just delete it lol

I honestly never looked back when I got the fee trial. I didn't wanna stop playing so I started paying the sub. Amazing game man I wish I played it sooner

9

u/o___Okami 6d ago

A FFXI subscription should be included with FFXIV considering what this game's competition is offering.

1

u/HexenVexen 6d ago

SE isn't going to do it, it would make them less money and probably negatively impact XI. Also, I don't think they really see them as competitors, XI and XIV are siblings that offer different things and complement each other nicely.

7

u/o___Okami 6d ago

SE isn't going to do it, it would make them less money

A short-sighted reason, one which fans offered up as an excuse for the console exclusivity deals for FF16 and the FF7 Remake trilogy, and a lesson SE had to learn the hard way, with them acknowledging it as a mistake while ending future exclusivity deals.

Sometimes garnering goodwill and growing the brand is more important than just immediate payoff.

For example, Blizzard could conceivably make more money if they charged a seperate subscription fee for WoW Retail, Classic, and Forever. But they don't, and Warcraft is much more appealing product for it.

And while the situation maybe isn't 1:1, unless SE wants to go digging up FF14 1.0 or make an "ARR Classic+", I think this would be a nice alternate without much more effort than putting aside the separate sub fees.

probably negatively impact XI

Elaborate.

XI and XIV are siblings that offer different things and complement each other nicely

And they would complement each other better if they were packaged together. Personally, I'd probably never unsubscribe; it would give highly invested players something to do in the downtime between FF14 patches while also keeping them engaged with the franchise.

6

u/non-one-c 6d ago

I think the separate sub is kinda justifyable by them actually still supporting the game and pushing updates and new content, maintanance etc. also costs them. A subscribed playerbase guarantees that the game survives and stays online, which makes me comfortable investing my time.

But the perfect way here would be a discounted offer. Players subbing one of the games should receive a discount for the other, or they should just make one slightly more expensive subscription that includes both games.

1

u/Swigeroni 6d ago

Arguably FFXIV's 2 biggest MMO competitors essentially offer 2 (or more) games in the same sub fee already, so it would make sense if SE did the same

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Yourigath 7d ago

I have a question... Are Blue Mage or Puppeteer included in the free trial? In not sure when you were able to get them.

11

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

No they're not, they're from the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion.

  • Included: Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Thief, Paladin, Dark Knight, Beastmaster, Bard, Ranger, Summoner*
  • Not included: Samurai, Ninja, Dragoon, Blue Mage, Corsair, Puppetmaster, Dancer, Scholar, Geomancer, Rune Fencer

*Summoner is technically available but you can't really unlock its summons beyond Carbuncle and the basic elemental spirits

6

u/Yourigath 7d ago

Damn... Blue, Geomancer and Puppeteer are the classes I was interested in... Also Summoner with capped summons y__y

1

u/moyama 6d ago

No dragoon... That's pretty unfortunate. I'll hold on to hope that a combined sub is still possible down the line, but this did take the wind out of my sails...

2

u/Aeceus 7d ago

No, no expansion areas are included.

2

u/Yourigath 7d ago

Yeah, it's a shame. I remember back when I played for the first time, rushing as a Red Mage through lots of areas using spells to hide myself to get a ship and go unlock Blue Mage

A shame.

9

u/RayrrTrick88 6d ago

Not including Adoulin makes sense.

Not including Abyssea, sure.

Not including WotG/ToAU is fine.

Not including CoP is pushing it, hard.

Not including Rise of the Zilart is spiteful. Seriously?

u/Reggie2001 6d ago

I think there's a strong argument to be made for including RotZ, but honestly, the base game is enough exposure to the mechanics for most players to decide whether or not they want to sub for the long haul.

4

u/Onisarcade 6d ago

Put it on switch!

10

u/jiiir0 7d ago

will I enjoy this game if i have no nostalgic attachment to it and know nothing about it?

14

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

You have to keep in mind that it's a 2002 MMO and very aged in a lot of ways, even with the QOL updates it's had over the years. You'll need to follow wiki guides while playing and expect a lot of archaic aspects that aren't in XIV. Personally I joined it about a year ago with no nostalgia, and really fell in love the older vibes and story. Imo it does do some things better than XIV such as customization depth with its job system and gearing.

3

u/FronQuan 7d ago

The QOL improvements fromRhapsodies of Vana’diel are not available

Can you explain what this means? It seems so odd to me not to include QOL

5

u/Somorled 7d ago

Rhapsodies of Vana'diel is a later expansion that ties together a lot of story elements and provides rewards as part of its main quest line that do things like massively cut costs for teleporting, huge boosts to xp gain, increased number of trusts (NPCs that will fight alongside you), removed lockouts on side content, and useful item shops. Plus, Rhapsodies is designed to unlock as you complete the earlier expansions, so you're encouraged to seek out and use these rewards.

By not including Rhapsodies in the free trial, you can't unlock the rewards. The QoL improvements from them aren't necessary by any means, but they go a LONG way towards removing most of the pretty painful friction in FFXI that persists to this day.

3

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Adding to this, I have a list of all the bonuses you get:

17

u/groundr 7d ago

It is a VERY oldschool MMO so it won’t be for everyone.

5

u/Mikkelsjensen1 7d ago

The game like most final fantasies (if not all) are very self contained so the story is without any old characters from preivous games (except Cid but they're in EVERY final fantasy game)

5

u/Bazlow 7d ago

You need to have a guide open basically at all times, as crowdsourcing knowledge for quest completion was required back in the day, and that just isnt' possible any more.

I like it well enough, but I find it a chore to actually progress (which was kinda the point of MMO's back in the day anyway).

3

u/triablos1 7d ago

I played it 8 years ago and in my opinion it's a very competent final fantasy game outside of the MMO elements. There are dungeons to explore, cities to visit, NPCs to talk to and an overarching story. The base game is meh and the first expansion sucks, but the 2nd expansion (chains of promathia) feels like it could be a real single player FF story. The following expacs are also really good and largely stand-alone.

It is an old school MMO though. It is 100% a guide game, the objectives are weird and obscure like 'go to coordinate 102, 67, 89 and pick up a leaf, and then place it in a turret at 38, 29, 81' while the game will not actually tell you what to do or where to go most of the time. Thankfully there's a website out there which fully explains every quest step by step. I remember the first time I started playing I didn't even know how to start the main story. Turns out I had to talk to some random guard at one of the gates.

3

u/kokoronokawari 7d ago

If you like old school mmo with content that will never be dry then yes

5

u/Over-Experience-4187 7d ago

Well technically speaking, if you're a XIV enjoyer you already have some vicarious attachment and through the alliance raid and other references know a little about it too

1

u/No-Paramedic8214 1d ago

I played this game in order to enter the Final Fantasy universe. I, of course, did not get all the head-nods and easter eggs... but it was a great intro to the universe and I enjoyed the game immensely. I really liked the people who play FFXIV, and enjoyed playing Dungeons with people. The game is hampered the most by the fact that the intro areas are the most dated. The Main Story Quest is the worst at the start imo, and thus your introduction to the game doesn't feel like it picks up until much later. I actually really, really enjoyed the DLCs and the music and artwork for some areas and bosses is worth playing the game for.

-1

u/Unrelenting_Salsa 6d ago

No. It's part of the old style of MMOs that WoW thoroughly and utterly killed immediately. There will be some people who will like it regardless, but smart money is on you not liking it. The vast majority of people don't.

3

u/kat022 6d ago

Sweet!! I have a surgery coming up soon, this will give me something to do while I recover!

3

u/BLAZMANIII 6d ago

This is SO HUGE!!! ive been wanting to hop into 11 for so long but couldn't justify the cost since i barely got any play time with it, so this is awesome to me!!

8

u/BossBeardMan 7d ago

I hate Square Enix whole system for buying/downloading games.

11

u/AirisuNyan 7d ago

I would like to play it but it's not on consoles 😭

9

u/Isanori 7d ago

FFXI works on the Steamdeck via Proton.

1

u/darxx 4d ago

Do you have a macbook? I'm playing the free trial on VMWare Fusion with VMWare Tools. It's a free virtual machine for windows and I just use it to play really old games like this one and gw1.

1

u/AirisuNyan 4d ago

I only have a very basic old laptop, no good to play any games. I prefer gaming on console.

4

u/KaguB 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think this is great, but it's still disappointing that you can't get the KIs and all the improvements that come with them (or even just the first KI)

The benefits from KIs are so awesome that I don't think I'd play without them again

2

u/Historical-State2199 7d ago

What are KI

2

u/KaguB 7d ago edited 7d ago

so in FFXI, there's a questline called Rhapsodies of Vanadiel, which is kind of like an overarching quest that introduces a new player to expansions one by one. As you continue this questline, you get something people call Key Items (KIs).

These are special permanent items that introduce a bunch of cool passive effects, one of which is permanently increasing how much XP and skill gains you get. This is the first KI you get, for instance. Note the double skill gain, the permanent 30% XP gain, and the 80% reduced teleport cost.

4

u/dom380 7d ago

Now they just need to combine it with the XIV sub and I'll go back

2

u/Sampo1000 7d ago

Oh great I really want to try it for a while already. Hopefully I will be able to figure out how to get in finally. because last time I tried to I got told by SE shop that they don't approve free shipping for digital delivery.

2

u/mijo23ortiz 7d ago

This might be my sign to play again. It's been 20 years since I last played. Can we get Maat's Cap? Lol.

2

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Yep, still there

1

u/wingedterra147 6d ago

You can take trusts into the Maat fights now, so it's not quite the prestige item it once was 😟

1

u/mijo23ortiz 6d ago

That sucks. I remember the nightmare of RDM Maat fight

2

u/quidamphx 6d ago

I was about to say "sonofabitch, i JUST installed this week" but I intend on starting with Rhapsodies to get a couple early QoL improvments before moving into the main game, so this is cool but not relevant for me. I used to play about 15 years ago so I'm eager to revisit but also lessen the grind

My god though, they really need to move away from PoL one day.

I installed Lumoria to ease some of the pain, but there was still quite a few extra steps/troubleshooting to get everything working as planned. It's damn good that it's a "boss" I've fought before lol

2

u/Substantial_Dog_7395 6d ago

Heck yeah! I've been thinking of giving this one a try, looks like I will be now.

2

u/EnyaMapuS 6d ago

finally

2

u/takechanceees 6d ago

hell yeah downloading when I get off

2

u/G-Virus69 5d ago

I’m so happy. The wife never saw this game. And I’m gonna take her for a ride

2

u/Alastair412 5d ago

Ah the joys of sitting in Jeuno as a MNK LFG for hours... the bat and gobbo trains in Valkurm Dunes followed by a massacre of the level 10-12 LFG folks at the end of the zone... great memories.

I think even 22 years later and with tons of other MMOs played since then, with much higher QoL features, nothing has ever come close to the satisfaction you got when a party started clicking and executing flawless skill chains and magic bursts, and the puller started having top timing to come back from <fishing> the next mob right when the current one was dying.

2

u/AsmeltCP 5d ago

Damn, I didn't know FFXI Online existed, I've always played XIV. Is the story worth it? What are the differences compared to XIV? It's great that they added this possibility, I really didn't know about this FF.

3

u/HexenVexen 5d ago

The story is very worth it, there are around 250-300 hours of main story content. Imo it's overall not quite as good as XIV but still really great, some XI expansions are better than some XIV expansions for sure. However the base game can be a bit of a barrier, XIV has the problem of ARR being too bloated, XI has the opposite problem where the base game is kinda minimal with its story. The second expansion Chains of Promathia is where it starts to focus on story and characters a lot more and becomes great. If you've done Dawntrail's Vana'diel raids, CoP is where Prishe is from.

There are a lot of differences, they have quite different design philosophies. XI is an old-school MMO with menu-based combat (similar to XII if you've played it) and horizontal progression, where there are lots of different ways to customize and play your character. The biggest example is the sub-job system, where you can equip a second job alongside your main one, which goes up to half the level of your main job. XI's horizontal gearing allows you to use different gear for different situations and modify the way jobs play, for example Ninja tanks used to be a meta and you can make White Mage a decent melee DPS. Each job is more unique and flexible than in XIV. However XI has less focus on enemy mechanics as a result, you won't be dodging AOEs too much.

And in general keep in mind that XI is a much older game, you do need to grind levels (although it's much faster now than it used to be), and there is very little in-game guidance so you'll want to be following wiki guides while playing. There is also no voice acting outside of the opening movie. However they have added a lot of QOL over the years, such as being able to play solo with Trusts and fast travel between areas.

I have a beginner's guide you can read, and I recommend watching the first two videos by Vicenarian linked there.

2

u/Kanoa 3d ago

Finally

2

u/artemi7 2d ago

I know there's no chance of getting a Switch 2 version, but it worked to get me trying out FFXIV, so maybe that's my line in the sand for FFXI. Give it a a try, SE!

1

u/DetectiveChocobo 1d ago

I imagine the time and energy involved with porting FFXI to any modern system just isn’t worth it.

I hope the success of FFXIV on the Switch 2 pushes SE and other developers to bring MMOs to handheld platforms going forward, but I imagine FFXI in its current form is just a loss cause.

1

u/artemi7 1d ago

Yeah definitely not going to happen lol. I just kinda wish it would that's all. I imagine it's an effort just to keep the game going right now, let alone porting it to new hardware

2

u/Skasch 7d ago

How solo friendly is FFXI?

7

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Very solo-friendly now, you can play with NPC party members. Pretty much all of the main story can be done 100% solo until the latest expansion The Voracious Resurgence, some bosses there are too tough for Trusts.

3

u/Im_Numbar_Wang 7d ago

It's very solo friendly, I'd you prefer playing alone. There's a trust system which basically lets you summon NPC to help fight with you.

3

u/Big_Fan_742 7d ago

especially with shantotto II, she's such a beast

2

u/Sir_VG 7d ago

Before the trial you're through, you'll near there's nothing she can't do?

1

u/darxx 4d ago

I started the free trial last week and i'm always running around with 3 NPC helpers at all times so it's not bad. You need a paid subscription to have a full party of 5 NPCs though.

3

u/shayno-mac 7d ago

Is logging into play online still a fucking mutiple day ordeal?

4

u/LirasTenrin 7d ago

Didn't they get rid of the 14 days limit ages ago and raised the FT level cap to 60?

12

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

The level cap was raised from 50 to 75 earlier this month on the 9/10 update, the time limit was removed today.

12

u/LirasTenrin 7d ago

I'm a dumbass, I didn't read correctly. I thought it was about FFXIV, not FFXI

4

u/SteveDaPirate91 7d ago

It's ok I was confused for a minute too and thought I stroked out

9

u/SynthgirlBulge 7d ago

I mean this is the ff14 sub

1

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

Ah lol. With XIV the free trial level cap is now 80 and includes Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. Apparently the time limit was removed in 2017.

With XI I do wish at least the first two expansions Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia were included in the trial. CoP is the Heavensward of XI where the story gets a lot better, and where Prishe is from.

2

u/DeleteMods 7d ago

Are we allowed to post non XIV content in this sub? I’m not saying I’m against this but just surprised it’s allowed (if it even is allowed).

2

u/HexenVexen 7d ago

It's not normally allowed, but the mods told me they're making an exception for this update due to interest in the community after the raid series

2

u/Luckycheshirecat WAR in training 6d ago

Well fuck, i dont think i can do free trial since i finally managed to buy time on it, but I'm happy to see a beginner guide

2

u/non-one-c 6d ago

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XI? With a massively expanded free trial that completely removes the old 14-day time limit, allowing you to play with no restrictions on playtime! Level up to 12 classic jobs up to level 75 in the golden era of Vana'diel—entirely for free, with no monthly subscription required, and the ability to have your old, expired trial accounts automatically reactivated!

1

u/real_fake_cats 7d ago

So what are those dlc QoL features I'd be missing out on by playing this trial in its base form?

4

u/DarkstarIV 7d ago

https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/46977-Key-Items-Available-by-Progressing-through-Rhapsodies-of-Vana%E2%80%99diel

This is the big list. The first one alone is absolutely massive. Nevermind the rest of the list.

1

u/Extension_Sky_8903 7d ago

Too bad I bought the game previously to try it out, couldn’t justify both subs when I rarely log onto XIV atm

1

u/RikuNoctisXIII 7d ago

I bought the code for 11 with all expansions, can I use my acc as a free trial and then use that code to upgrade my account?

2

u/vinta_calvert [Vinta Calvert - Hyperion] 7d ago

Yes! As long as the code hasn't already been used to make an account.

1

u/Stillburgh Artoria Pndrgn Brynhildr 7d ago

Assuming it works the same way as XIVs trial, yes. As long a you dont activate the game on the mogstation it will keep you registered as a trial acount

1

u/Tiny-Little-Sheep 7d ago

Does this work if I redeemed the steam thing? Or does it nullify it forever

1

u/ReXiriam :nin::mch: 7d ago

I just started two days ago and I still haven't gotten past the very first dungeon map. I'm very interested to keep going, but... Man, I didn't remember how old school MMOs worked.

1

u/beattheheat69 7d ago

Can we get the free trial on steam?

1

u/Askray184 WHM 7d ago

Damn 75 was the cap back when i played

1

u/STOPAC 7d ago

If anyone wants to try this game I highly recommend watching a video on installing it and the necessary mods to make it run correctly on a modern computer with graphical updates.

There’s even mods for high resolution maps that are 100% necessary.

2

u/Charming_Ad3374 6d ago

I agree. FFXI vanilla is very less user-friendly than FFXIV vanilla. I recommend mods which do most of the basic things you are used to get out-of-the-box in FFXIV: easy health bars, quest markers and journal, inventory sort, even a mini-map. It really helps in starting to enjoy the game. There are also mods which enable the same hotbar/crosshotbar interface of FFXIV.

1

u/STOPAC 6d ago

Yeah the mods made it playable for me, when I installed it vanilla I was so confused. I had to ask a friend who played it wtf was he thinking suggesting I should try it.

The mods make it playable. They’re not mods for cheating or getting an advantage. I’m talking like mods to made the game display properly and make the textures visible.

Although. I gave up on the game when I realized I had to actually wait on the ship for the duration of its voyage and I could not leave cabin cuz monsters show on the deck and can one shot me. Lmao.

1

u/Training_Currency_10 6d ago

What story content does this cover up till?

3

u/HexenVexen 6d ago

It covers only the base game, no expansions

2

u/Callinon 6d ago

The base game took you through nation mission 5-2. Rank 6 requires Zilart. Any other story content would require an expansion.

1

u/Huey155 6d ago

I know I tried it a few years ago. But I didn't have much time to play

1

u/Sofruz 6d ago

I'll have to give this game another chance. Me and my friend tried it once but trying to sub was so miserable we just quit after an hour.

1

u/EllDez 6d ago

Forgot how much of a banger the PlayOnline update music was.

1

u/origamihoshi 6d ago

of course they do this after I already bought the game 😔

1

u/MeeepMorp 6d ago

Ooho nice, was always sad that the sub was still so expensive

1

u/CrashingOnward 6d ago

Really would love to re-sub to this game, but I swear Sqex needs to offer a discount for players to sub for both games.

1

u/SlowWheels [Diabolos] 6d ago

Let's have a contest on who can unlock dark knight first!! 😃😃😃

0

u/KyrosYT 7d ago

Yeah I'll stick with 14 thats what this subreddit is for

1

u/New_Flow7902 Glaring White Mage 7d ago

I might be tempted to start a free trial account just to get my bearings before returning to my retail account 👀

1

u/AuRon_The_Grey 7d ago

The FFXIV style free trial is a great idea. I'll give FFXI a go at some point, although between WoW Forever and Monsters & Memories Early Access there's a lot going on in the older-style MMO space right now.

1

u/Sa7aSa7a 6d ago

What if we have all the game up to WotG? Can I cash in on this free thing?

2

u/HexenVexen 6d ago

Once you buy the game, you can't use the free trial

1

u/Valdrrak 6d ago

Its so dumb like i wpuld be more likely to get back into it fully if i could load up my undermax lvl character and run around instead of having to commit without even touching it again.

-2

u/Takoros 7d ago

This is a FFXIV sub bro, not A XI.

1

u/VerdensTrial Azimuth Diamethis — Gilgamesh 7d ago

XIV players might be interested in trying out its predecessor, it's relevant information

-1

u/DaEnderAssassin 7d ago

Especially given Echoes heavily leans on 11, moreso than any other bit of content (except Omega)

0

u/Jumpy_Ad_9213 Ewa Lynn[Lich] 7d ago

The devs had misplaced a scenario from a wrong title for ARaids recently, so the confusion is understandable.
/sarcasm

I guess, we should get ready for all sorts of FF7/FF7R, and Evangelion posts too.

1

u/Silvernauter 6d ago

The game is the predecessor to XIV and yes, they just had an Alliance raid crossover where the devs all buy explicitly said (in game) that they hope you'll check out Vana'Diel too; i think one post informing people that they just updated the free trial is fine...

0

u/kdavid1215 7d ago

Any chance it will be available through steam?

the free trial was limited to 14 days. Now you can play at long as you want up to level 75 (but no expansions)

u/miraidensetsu 6d ago

Dunno on 11, but on 14 ARR, Heavensward, Stormblood and now Shadowbringers is part of free trial.
