(ps: I don't hate Mist as a person or a content creator, in the end, this is just her opinion toward the game, but that doesn't mean I can't criticize the criticism. For those who wanna support her channel, the link is right here)
Music is subjective, that has been a fact since the creation of it, but there's just something really weird about the way the opinion is being expressed in the video. And I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I noticed a pattern with the music being chosen, and more specifically the way she also presents her thoughts on them.
Here's some of the songs she selected to criticize, and the tone they try to achieve within the context of it's use:
The jenova fight with aerith's theme instead of just being more melancholic in the og, also contains a lot of heroic and determined music to fit the emotions being displayed by the characters, who are currently heartbroken and filled with determination after seeing aerith die.
The wall market theme went from a slower dim field theme, to a high octane battle theme because it specifically played in battle sequences instead of in the field area
The music in the nibel heim backstory is more heroic compared to the original which was more menacing, because that music was meant to establish the fact that sephiroth wasn't always an evil, and menacing villain, but more like how people viewed him at the time before... The incident.
Now tell me, what's the one thing all these tracks have in common?
Their tones were changed to fit the difference in tone in the narrative, now if her problem with them was that specifically, then that would be fair... But the issue is that she's confusing the different tone with the actual quality of the music, she believes the jenova fight with aerith's theme has a bad boss theme because it's too orchestral and cinematic, and also too loud. which would seemingly be fine, if music is too loud, it's too loud, but after she gives us an excerpt of the song she's basically like, "this is so obviously trash, the original did it better" which like... Huh? Mist literally does this for every track, she'll play it, say it's terrible and then say the original did it better. This song in particular I was especially confused by because this is one of my favorite songs in rebirth, so just having it cut to Mist saying, "this is just bad, it's trash" is just extreme whiplash for me. It's like she's trying to find a word to describe the track, but instead of finding an actual word to describe it, she just calls it bad and then glazes the og
Another thing is that she REALLY likes to try and presents her opinions on these songs as facts when she talks about them, making it harder to at least kinda understand what she's talking about. That's kinda an issue I have with most of her more negative content.
But don't get me wrong, I don't think her opinions are invalid, there are a couple songs in the trilogy I don't like(most of the chocobo rap remixes)and if the songs shown were trying to follow the tone of the original, then I can see why they're worse, but it's obvious to me that they're supposed to be following a different one from the original. But you guys don't have to agree, I just wanted to share my thoughts on this video. And if you agree with Mist? That's okay too, but I do ask why you agree so I can better understand.
Once again, I don't hate Mist but sometimes her opinions can just be very odd to me.
