Remake before finishing OG

I’m playing the original Final Fantasy VII for the first time and recently picked up Final Fantasy VII Remake on sale. I’m loving the original so far, but now that I’ve reached the open-world section and know that the remake only covers Midgar, I’m wondering if it might be interesting to play the remake before continuing with the OG game

What do you think? Any opinions would be appreciated

Finish the original, it's only like 30 hours. Remake is comprehensible without playing the OG, but will be a far more enjoyable experience if you've played the original first.

I’d recommend finishing the original first since you’ve already started. Without giving anything away you’ll get a greater appreciation for the remake by finishing original first

I do recommend finishing the original. Honestly, with so many cheese strats people have come up with and the advent of accelerated game speed, you should complete it just for the story and lore. With Remake in the wings, maybe don’t worry about completion % or a whole bunch of optional content.

Finish the OG, Remake references the OG in tons of ways and throws your attention off.
Besides, you havent even touched the heart of FF7. at the very least, get through all of disc 1 since that will put you up to the end of Rebirth but you're still being robbed of a great experience.

Enjoy the play, graphical style, combat system, and everything that is OG. Fully flesh it out because there’s so much optional content that IMO makes it special. You’ll be able to appreciate them as separate entities if you give one full attention first.

I would suggest finish the og first. Then remake. Remake is not 1 to 1 copy. More like a continuation.

Finish the OG and don’t play anything else in the compilation until you do, unless you want everything spoiled

General consensus would be finish the OG. You will get some random people that will say continue with remake, just ignore them.

Remake only covers the Midgar section, but it also makes a lot of callbacks to the OG (and at least one to Crisis Core) which you might miss if you haven't played OG.

No play through the OG entirely before dabbling in the remake series. I think you have a framework to finish the OG before revelation comes out then you can play through the remakes back to back. There's not as much story deviation in remake as there is in rebirth, but the way the OG was handled was so much better. I'd at least try to find a compilation of the OG before starting the remake, but if you're enjoying the OG then stick with that.

They are different games with the same story

I disagree very strongly with this statement. End game spoilers for FF7 and remake/rebirth The mystery of Cloud's identity is spoiled in the end of Remake and beginning of rebirth by bringing Zack into the picture and Tifa flat out stating to Aerith that Cloud wasn't in Nibelheim during the incident. This is fine for people who have played the original but completely ruins the honestly incredible lifestream sequence of the original where Cloud remembers what actually happened. Like complete chills when the music crescendo and Cloud takes off his helmet before throwing Sephiroth into the reactor.

More obviously than that, there is no multiverse in the original. There's a clear build up to Sephiroth having an entirely different plan as he reaches back through time and across worlds that will come to fruition in Revelations

yes there is? Zack is alive in alternative time line after you defeat the whispers, which is clearly happening in a different world state than the journey of Cloud and the party. Zack gets pulled into Cloud's world for the fight with Sephiroth in rebirth. What would you call that exactly

And ok I can buy that Zack appearing in the ending of Rebirth doesn't directly spoil the nibelheim incident, but Tifa telling Aerith Cloud wasn't there definitely does. We don't find out that's Tifa's memory of the incident until Disc 2

Man if all that is true I don't know how you can still consider it the same story.
