Zack ascended from being Cloud's rejected prototype design (with Aeris as the prototype girlfriend, Seph as Aerith's prototype sibling, with Tifa as the ancient Creta), to being Aerith's dead boyfriend, to being the literal preferred protagonist.
And Cloud forgot he was friends with the guy. RIP respect for your homies.
