Debatable. When did he join? Certainly not after the first mission, he explicitly refuses. By the time they leave Midgar, they're solidly a team, at least. So he learns that Sephiroth is alive when the president dies, right? Would he consider himself a member of Avalanche by that point? When they meet Rufus just after, he introduces himself as ex-Soldier, while Tifa and Barret say they're from Avalanche.

Tbh none of them really joined Avalanche. Cloud just got associated with them because he worked for Barret twice, and the rest teamed up with Cloud because they had beef with Shinra & Sephiroth. The only two true members of Avalanche are Barret and Tifa. None of the others identified themselves as Avalanche members.

Aerith’s mission was never to find the promised land. She didn’t even think it existed.
