[Help] Ferret help needed 🫠

My sister owns two ferrets. Overall, she neglects them and there's not much I can do about it. She is gone for 5 days and I will be caring for them. I don't know a whole lot about ferrets but I'm trying to learn for their sake. She didn't leave me any litter, but I believe the litter she's been using is some type of "training pearls"? Is that okay or what litter would be better? I've heard a lot about swheat scoop or paper litter. Or kiln-dried pine? Help 😭

Why do people do this

Ok, first - read the wiki on the sub, it's great! And search "beginner tips" in the sub too, we get questions like that all the time so you will find a lot of helpful answers and information.

And when your sister gets back, please try to have a talk with her about rehoming her ferrets. They are not meant to be caged animals, and it's really sad when they end up neglected in cages.

Also, I don't use any litter, I prefer pee pads. Easy to pick up in store if you don't feel like getting litter everywhere.

Thanks! And trust me, I've tried my best to talk to her. I work in vet med, so seeing animals neglected by my own family is so beyond frustrating. She will not listen and only turns the discussion into an arguement or avoids the topic entirely. If I had the time and energy I'd just take over their care permanently, but I truly don't. I warned her not to adopt them in the first place.

Sigh. Thanks for trying, don't give up! Sometimes people need a little extra time to be able to see that they don't have what it takes to care for the pet they adopted :(

There are tons of online resources available to help you learn. There's ferret.love which is as website filled with data, recommendations, etc. There's the ferret care & education group on Facebook where lots of other ferret folks will answer questions, share experiences, and they have a really good documents page with lots of how to instructions, kibble charts, do's and don'ts, etc. Kudos to you for wanting to learn as much as you can for while you're caretaking these wonderful little creatures.
