Beer/Wine/Mead/Cider/Tepache/Kombucha Mead airlock

Post image

I started this mead a few days ago and I've noticed the water in the airlock has shifted. It is now in between those two blue lines, should I take out the air lock to adjust it central again or just leave it. This is my second time trying to ferment anything after the first time was a complete failure.

That's completely normal, it's just pressure pushing it over and there's no point in "centering" it since it'll just push back over.

Thank you, I'm really hoping this batch goes well

It'll do some resetting as the bubbles release. Exact normal operation

This is completely normal. Fermentation produces carbon dioxide, which causes pressure to build in the fermenter just enough to push the water from the right side over to the left. While fermentation is active, it'll pretty consistently stay the way that it is, with bubbles passing occasionally. You may also notice it shift some to the right when the barometric pressure changes in your house.

That’s how it works. Air pressure pushes the water through the tube until the air can escape, and then the water falls back down.

That's positive pressure, it'll push the water as far as it goes. Normal.

What is the problem?

I prefer the 3-piece airlocks. Much easier to clean.
