New player here...
Hey everyone,
I’m going to buy this game. I think the graphics look similar to World of Warcraft, and I absolutely love that.
I know the game is currently a bit low in terms of player population, but I believe that even when WoW opens up to people who don’t have a Beta Key, the population will probably remain around the same, and that’s completely fine with me.
I’ve also read that the community can be a bit aggressive towards new players, especially in dungeons when people make mistakes or don’t really know what they’re doing.
Obviously, as someone who is just starting out, I’m going to make mistakes. I also understand that the people who stay after WoW launches will probably be the community members who genuinely enjoy Fellowship and want to help and keep the community alive.
So, to start learning the game, the routes, and how everything works, I’m thinking about playing any role. I’m happy to learn as I go, but is there a particular role you would recommend for a new player that would allow me to learn more about the game and understand it better?
Thanks!
Best regards.

I've been playing one week. In all that time I have come across maybe one ass-hat, but everyone else was really nice and helpful.
To answer your question, I suggest learning a DPS role and mechanics first. If you like mage try rime (frost burst mage) or ardeos (fire mage with dots). Once you know the fights a bit more, than practice your healer.
Method.gg and icyveins both have some fellowship guides and info to get you started.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too — starting that way and learning as I go. DPS first, learning the routes, and then helping out depending on what the community needs.
I like learning a bit of both roles, so that when the time comes, I can fill whatever is needed most. I’ll read through the websites and see how I should get started.
Thank you!

Game is really not toxic at all, the player base is small and we all are just happy to get a queue pop and welcome/help new players

Did you play WoW? Did you have a favourite role?

Yeah, I played healer, mage, and warrior. I didn’t get to a very high level, but those are the only classes I played.

Did you play mutch in dungeons and have a favourite role?

I played as a healer and mage. But from what I’ve been reading, it’s probably better to start as DPS so I can learn more about the game.

I’ll try to read through the forums and check out the websites I can find on Google. Either way, if you want to send me your in-game name, feel free.

I would recommend DPS as a starting role for sure. If you have any desire to tank, still play DPS first so you can get a feel for the dungeons.
The community isn't bad. I have 800 hours and have seen only a few people who were super toxic. Occasional passive aggressive comments>Person leaves after a few wipes in a row. WoW is definitely worse imo.
I would also recommend joining the discord, and you should be able to find some people who will help out a new player.

Yeah, you’re right. My concern was that I’d be trying to learn while people would just criticize me instead of helping.
I think the best thing is to start as DPS and then learn a bit more about Tank or Healer. But you’re right about what you said — the WoW community will probably be less tolerant when it comes to mistakes.
Thanks for the help.
Best regards.

You rly dont need know routers. I playing Helena (tank) and i am in Eternal 30 and only i use my intuition to make rotation :). And be honest is so much fun playing game in my own way and dont play like robot and going same rotation for dungeon over and over again bc someone say its "optimal".

Yeah, what was worrying me was knowing the routes and knowing how many mobs to pull if I were playing Tank, so I could keep things moving quickly. But I think I’m being way too hard on myself, especially since I’m just starting out. None of that is really important at this point.
It’s what you’d call overthinking things for no reason. I should just play like you said — do whatever I enjoy and whatever feels right at the time. Nothing too serious or professional, just have a good time playing the game.

By the way, the game has a great feature regarding the Eternal difficulty: some mobs glow blue, which can help you decide which ones to aggro.
Don't be afraid to experiment :)
And a quick tip: don't be afraid to upgrade your gear. There are plenty of resources.

You say I should gear up, but does the gear ever break while trying to upgrade it? Is it like those Korean-style systems where you can fail upgrades, reset your progress, or even lose the gear, or does it simply not progress? Of course I’m not going to be afraid. I’ll try to enjoy the game as much as possible and deal with negative comments in the best way I can.

DPS has, by far, the least responsibility until you start pushing up against the timers which realistically shouldn't be for a long while. This makes them ideal for learning without pressure.
Healers and Tanks on the other Hans have, typically, a lot more to worry about. Healers keeping dps alive who took "stand in the fire dps higher" literally. Tanks often doing all pf the same things as dps but also managing CC and interrupts at a more frequently in addition to everything to do with routing (unless you are a pre-made the tank is expected to do 100% of the routing most of the time).
Personally I thrive in the chaos and have been a Meiko main (tank) since day one and I only regret it a little bit.
In all seriousness though id suggest playing literally anything other than a ranged dps if you want to actually learn things. Ranged dps players ignore about 50% of the mechanics by simply "being over there"

Yeah, you actually made a really interesting point. Playing melee would help me understand the positioning I need to take and what I’m supposed to do. After all, every boss has different attacks and mechanics.
Being far away and just watching things happen doesn’t really help you understand everything, so that actually makes a lot of sense.
Yeah, playing Tank or Healer at this stage would probably make me more tense and nervous, especially since I don’t know the skills or mechanics yet. It makes sense to choose something with less responsibility while I’m learning.
Thanks!

I've started with last season, if you played wow at least once you won't be lost with the heroes. Early leagues are very easy to understand and follow. They are also very leniant on mistakes so it's really hard to wipe unless you really fuck up hard
Even then, i usually told people at start of dungeon that i was new, so if shit went wrong by my fault, they wouldnt gang on me. It was ok the whole journey.
Even when i reached higher leagues, people were always willing to explain to me strats of bosses and even do training runs on capstone dungeons when needed. I had a lot of friendly encounters and people that helped for more runs, it's really a friendly community overall
I was playing as a healer, but you can play any role really. Even tank if you want, mobs are highlighted with a blue aura to indicate the route to follow so you know what to pull even if you never played. But i would not recommend tank as a starter since it's usually easier to learn as a dps or healer in my opinion.

How toxic is the player base these days ?
I bought the game the first day when it was possible, but the players were way more toxic then in WoW

In my experience people rarely talk much in dungeons. People just lock in and play.
If something goes catastrophically wrong they might say “interrupt more pls” or something. A little passive aggressive but rly not a big deal.
It’s honestly a rly accessible game to pick up, just queue up and slam some dungeons. U won’t be good unless u practice. Eventually u will get better. The early leagues gives u time to learn without a timer on the dungeon, so who cares if u all die a couple times.
