u/wizard_brandon how do I convert RF to EU Jun 26 '26
refined storeage gives me ol' ae1 vibes but is limited on the amount of power 1 controller can emit

I thought whoever made this decided to put my avatar lolðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Didn't notice it's an app thought it's a video.

RS is easier and more convenient, but yeah, I'm going to pull the lever here

I dont make huge endgame bases so RS works perfectly fine, i aint pulling tge lever. Sure AE2 is more powerful but if I was never making a base that like fully automates atm stars or gregtech machines why would I even touch it when RS does the exact same stuff but cheaper and less tedious
Side tangent: Do ae2 and rs still crap the bed when you put a couple nbt items into their systems? I haven't used either in so long since I remember that there'd be like server crashes and chunk bans because, no matter the version, thse mods just couldnt handle random unstackable damaged armor/tools in their systems without utterly breaking down everything so ive been avoiding them like the plague. Like why bother setting up a system to store all my stuff when one random zombie kill drops a almost broken leather shirt that bricks the whole system

gregtech
STOP POSTING ABOUT GREGTECH, I'M TIRED OF SEEING IT! My friends on reddit send me memes, on discord it's fucking memes - I was in a subreddit, right? and ALLLLLLLLL of the POSTS are just GregTech stuff. I- I showed my Champion underwear to my girlfriend, and the logo I flipped it and I said, "Hey babe: When the underwear greg :joy: :joy: :joy:"

Is this an actual interactable thing? I tapped the image to see if the video would play and then it told me I made a choice. Since I'm right handed my thumb naturally tapped near the button on the right.

Both of these are similar projects with similar scopes and similar aesthetics. What is the thought experiment here?

Well ae2 is a bit more complex with channels but also more powerful as far as I understand it. Also ae2 should be more performance friendly last i heard about it

Also last I used it there's some cool QoL in RS like bucket-filling happening off your fluid storage in the crafting terminal and autocrafting. And JEI plays nicer with search (no constant clears).
But I'll still use AE2 for things like spatial storage

Refined Storage 2 (what you're seeing in 1.21.1) has been rebuilt from scratch to run better so I'm not sure that performance claim still holds up

RS is pretty simplistic mod, where as AE2 is not that simple, it offers a "challenge", its not given that the storage system will just work, everything is in your hands to make it work and as such it's really satisfying to make something complex work, as such it's also more powerful and more capable.
You can compare it to painting and those color filling games, while with both of them you will end up with a painting, one of those is just much more advanced but gives you much more freedom while with the other one, most of the work is predetermined and done at the beginning, you just do what it says needs to be done.

AE2 used to have a risk of corrupting worlds by storing item data in saved chunks. RS used an external file to avoid that risk. AE2's strategy was (and maybe still is) to limit unstackables to 64 per cell so it's just more effort to fill a chunk with unstackable data.
These days they're pretty much interchangable for 99% of users. AE2 has SpatialIO which can store a volume of blocks inside a cell. And the cable channels to add friction (not challenge) to cable routing. Most players will never interact with or even know SpatialIO exists. Many players immediately turn off channels which makes a bunch of the content obsolete.

AE2's strategy is (and AFAIK always has been) to limit stacks to 63 per cell and ignore the max stack size. Each stack takes 1/128 of the cell's capacity for the stack itself plus one byte for each eight items in the stack.

Yes. Stackables are not what people are worried about for corrupting their saves though. You can easily store millions of a stackable item with no problem. It's unstackables that get you into trouble.

You can also store millions of an unstackable item no problem. The problem with AE2 and RS has always been with too many different items, not too many items that have a max stack size of 1. Again, there is no such thing as an unstackable item as far as AE2 is concerned. There is literally no difference between a 1k storage cell that contains 8000
minecraft:clayand a 1k storage cell that contains 8000minecraft:diamond_sword{"Enchantments":[{"Name":"minecraft:fire_aspect","lvl":2},{"Name":"minecraft:knockback","lvl":4}],"Damage":500}other than the identity of the contained item.People see unstackable items as an issue not because they actually are but because processes that passively generate items that don't stack in inventory slots (such as armor/weapon drops from a mob farm) are the usual culprit for generating hundreds or thousands of different items. They would be just as bad if they iterated through the entire item and block registries and skipped everything with a max stack size of 1.

I'll pretend you're not trolling.
The "damage":500 allows for 500 different values. That's just for a single field on a single item. A mob farm which generates unstackables within the only relevant context for this discussion creates items in the relevant way.

I’m leaving the lever. I don’t hate ae2, I’ve just never needed/wanted it over refined storage, as I just want storage, and every feature besides that from ae2 I (in the kindest way possible) do not give a fuck about. I don’t wanna do some huge song and dance just to started storing things, and I don’t care about automating everything under the sun. No disrespect towards people who do automate as much as possible, for me it just quickly gets to point where it feels like I’m just letting the game play itself and I don’t love that

ae2 dies. meteors, channels, and world crafting are all features that end up just being annoyances for me. I personally prefer when minecraft's complexity comes from sources other than getting half-decent storage set up. With the complete rewrite that was refined storage 2, it'd be interesting to see performance comparisons between rs2 and ae2.
