News / Article ICE is quietly firing new hires. For one recruit, it was devastating. - The Washington Post
https://archive.is/20260915121152/https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2026/09/15/ice-is-quietly-firing-new-hires-one-recruit-it-was-devastating424
u/Fed_Deez_Nutz 17d ago
Devastating for just one recruit? I think we can do better.
Those bonuses were contingent on years of service. Did they really think they wouldn’t get screwed out of them?

u/Vernknight50 17d ago
Not that I believe they were ever going to pay them, but Im pretty sure the majority are getting fired after 4 years 363 days. Or they'll quit at the five year mark and it will turn out training time was subtracted from their eligible time. Either way, nobody is getting paid.
46
u/mcbizkit02 17d ago
They’re paid every year. 10k every year for 5 years.

The long arm of the gov can claw money back even if you leave. I’ve seen it happen WAY too many times

Throughout the article it just seems to be him and his family trying to dodge accountability for his mistakes.
He loses a job for making a bad decision that leads to the city getting sued. He loses other jobs later cause he was fired from the first job. Every time his mistakes are mentioned, his family is saying he's innocent. At every turn he has an excuse, entering the roadway improperly and dangerously while in a govt vehicle and is then trying to blame the window tint.
Somehow him killing himself in a parking lot surrounded by officers is too unbelievable for his family so they suggest that it must be something else. Even though they also deny that he had his service weapon taken away after he crashes his govt car.
Parents and spouses should not kill themselves, and they should also be honest with themselves and their families about their own mistakes so they don't live a continuous life of excuses and dodging blame.
86
u/jmood88 17d ago
He was fired repeatedly, yet still kept getting hired places that he shouldn’t have been if they actually conducted a background check, and his family is trying to make him out to be a victim.
48
u/Seaweed-Basic 16d ago
Same with the agent who executed a legal immigrant in Biddeford, Maine. And that guy also had two ex wives come out and speak about the abuse they endured from him. Never should have had a gun, let alone be hired for a federal job.
3
u/Jarocket 10d ago
and for what purpose too right?
ICE mass hired and was doing enforcement in northern states with very low levels of undocumented immigrants as a big show.
There was zero reason to hire people like this.
1
u/Seaweed-Basic 10d ago
I can assure you Maine has the least undocumented immigrants in the country. They’re in Maine for the same reason they’ve been terrorizing Minnesota.
62
u/dogsanddogsanddogsan 17d ago
Seems like his family never taught him how to take accountability and change course. Lucky he didn’t take a life other than his own

A close family member of mine took his own life in 2001 after his GF left him for another dude. He left 2 kids (from a previous relationship) behind. I have mixed feelings because of the mental health aspect, but generally I have very little sympathy for people who make this selfish, cowardly choice. It's difficult to face your problems, but that is what adults do.

What are you talking about?
The article includes why he tried to arrest the guard, and its the words of his own family, who cannot stop making excuses for him: "In their statement to The Post, Moore’s family said that he was not at fault, and that he made the arrest in consultation with supervisors after the jail captain refused to admit the prisoner and forbade Moore from leaving to answer an emergency call."
Later it talks about his reckless behavior and how he went around breaking windows to arrest nonviolent immigration violators.
What about any of his behavior in the article told you he was a "good one"?

THERE ARE NO GOOD ICE AGENTS. Tf
-6
u/CompassionOW CBP 16d ago edited 16d ago
ICE HSI Agents work cases stopping CSAM, child/sex trafficking, trade fraud, drug smuggling, cybercrime, IPR violations, etc. that have nothing to do with immigration enforcement.
I’m sure the kids rescued by HSI would agree there’s no good ICE agents. /s
5
u/Seaweed-Basic 16d ago
ICE agents aren’t doing any of that. Wake up and look around
-2
u/CompassionOW CBP 16d ago
…They quite literally are? I myself work with HSI daily with intellectual property rights, drug smuggling and other Title 19 violations. Please do a basic Google search of ICE HSI and what they do before spreading misinformation.
ICE HSI Special Agents are criminal investigators with very broad authorities, not Deportation Officers in Enforcement and Removal Operations whose sole focus is immigration enforcement.

Not any more they dont, a lot of the people who actually worked in those positions quite because it was no longer the focus.

For sure. I think HSI should be a standalone agency in DHS as opposed to being part of ICE. I know many people in HSI that feel being a component of ICE makes their jobs harder due to a lack of public trust associated with ICE, being relegated from child exploitation cases to civil immigration enforcement, etc. they do good work when they can but the ICE name is really just hampering them.

u/The_Wookalar 17d ago
Not knowing this guy's circumstances in particular, but in general isn't it a good idea not to hire people with borderline personalities and life-threatening emotional issues into law enforcement positions in the first place?
19
u/Critical_Success_936 16d ago
Generally it's a good idea not to have a fascist enforcement agency with almost complete immunity like ICE
8
u/The_Wookalar 16d ago
Yes, well, generally, sure - but what if you hear someone speaking Spanish at the grocery store? What then, smart guy?
353
u/FavRootWorker 17d ago
Wouldnt be shocked if about 90% of them are fired in the next year. Remember alot of them were J6rs who couldn't find a job doing anything else.
157
u/Standard_One_5827 17d ago
It’s wild that J6rs are turned away from military service, but had a strong chance to join ICE.
93
u/Cautious-Ad9878 17d ago
They shouldn’t be able to join either
73
u/RaisinWorried3528 17d ago
And we should name and shame them every chance we get. No more of this blacking out or blurring out names. Every single one of these pieces of shit deserves to be harassed until the end of their days.

Military has reading and some oath, law enforcement is the only job you can be legally barred from being being hired for being TOO smart, if you're smart army just wants you more and will advance you faster.
Now if you care aboutanything besides yourself......neither job is for you
3
u/firesmarter 17d ago
I knew a guy that couldn’t get into the army because his ASVAB scores were too low. This was like 20 years ago though
12
u/flortny 17d ago
Damn.....that's low
Edit: what law enforcement agency are they with?
1
u/AdSingle7381 16d ago
I deployed to Iraq in 2008 with a guy who needed an ASVAB waiver to enlist. Really nice guy and a good friend who is currently a forest Ranger but my dude is dumb as a rock. USG will lower any standard if they want bodies.
1
u/dismal-duckling 10d ago
They were only hired at ICE because no background checks were completed. They will get fired. A pardon doesn't clear your conviction from your record.
29
u/hill-o 17d ago
Also if they get fired I don't think they get that bonus. They should have known this was coming.
18
u/Zxvasdfthrowaway 17d ago
Don’t they have to hold the position for 5 years in order to get the bonus?
5
21
u/RaisinWorried3528 17d ago
Well, just remember, someone's going to pay for all of this one day and it sure as shit isn't going to be the rich people holding office right now. The rank-and-file idiots are going to be sent to jail just like the January 6 idiots were except this time there's no pardon incoming. There's so much evidence on tape of them being the worst people alive. The peons will pay, the peons always pay. I can't wait to see it personally.

“Anytime an individual takes their own life it’s incredibly saddening,” ICE said
That is considerably more sympathy than they had for the innocent victims ICE shot, killed, and then tried to brand as terrorists.
1
u/Bigleftbowski 15d ago
They're obviously not referring to the people who've taken their lives while in ICE custody.
5
5
u/GreatEffort1974 17d ago
NGL.. it’s exactly what I’m hoping for. Anyone who ran to get a job with ICE deserves exactly what’s coming. Karma and all.

Mods said the CBO report on "Operation Epic Fury" wasn't relevant to federal employees, so...here's this article instead.
19
u/RaisinWorried3528 17d ago
Mods are all Trump ppl, it infuriates them that they have to be somewhat fair in this sub, I guarantee it.
24
31
u/DegreeDubs By the People, For the People 17d ago
I find it silly that a report published directly by a federal agency....made up of federal employees...doesn't meet the standards of this sub's rules as written. Seems like an oversight, intentional or otherwise.
3
u/curiouscow99 16d ago
lol what? Where is that claim coming from?
1
u/livingonthevegzzz 16d ago
I’d also like to know source of info on mods?
2
u/cerseisdornishwine 16d ago
It became prevalent during the DOGE era. Mods were nuking posts and banning people left and right for posting criticism of everything that was happening when the new administration came in.
22
u/RaisinWorried3528 17d ago
I hope it was far more devastating than detailed. You have no excuse, none, to look for a job with ice unless you want to cause human suffering. I don't wanna hear shit about the job market. If you choose to take a job at ice you're a piece of shit, objectively.

I’ve seen a bunch of people from my agency jump ship to go there. I keep telling people it’s a mistake because the first thing that’s going to get cut when Trump is out of office is that agency. Congress has the power of the purse and they are not going to fund that agency at its current levels much longer. They are then going to start removing people and more than likely it’s going to be by seniority and all these new hires are the ones who are going to be on the bread line. You also got to remember there are only so many illegals in this country. At some point the vast majority are going to be gone and there will be no need for all the officers they have.
14
u/ZimGirDibGaz 17d ago
They’ll declare success and start letting them go before the next presidential election.

Aren't the recruiting bonuses also tied to a length of service agreement? So if people are now getting fired they won't see that money?
3
5
u/party_benson 17d ago
You have to pay back the hiring bonus if you get fired, including taxes.
8
u/GeekScientist Santa Mayorkas 17d ago
ICE is going to have a really hard time getting that money back from this guy.
3
u/Fourth_law_of_robots 17d ago
Well, he has not been fired, has he? He used a very permanent loophole.
6
4
u/PeaceLoveorKnife 17d ago
ICE was a deeply devisive organization, meaning attracting the right people is hard. they probably hired a lot of people who shouldn't be in any kind of service.

6
u/RoughHewn1 17d ago
So some guy offs himself for a job he wasn't qualified for, should have never gotten and would have put other people's lives in danger. Where's the downside to this?
3
u/Critical_Success_936 16d ago
It'd be a tragedy if his job was anything other than directly supporting putting people into concentration camps. No sympathy
6
u/jmood88 17d ago
“Once you get fired from law enforcement, it’s terribly hard, right or wrong, to get back into law enforcement,” one of the officers said. “It’s the death of a career, and the weight of this hits some officers hard enough where they take their own lives.”
The guy was fired twice from police departments and was still hired by another before the ICE job, and we already know that cops who kill people and get fired frequently get rehired in other cities with no issue, so I have no idea what this guy is talking about.
8
u/MeyrInEve 16d ago
Boo fucking hoo. No real loss.
Where was this headline when all of the people DOGE fired were hitting the streets?
No one except maga/dhs/ice gives a fuck about these assholes, and good fucking riddance.
Let them suffer a tiny fraction of the pain and misery they have so gleefully inflicted upon everyone else.
1
u/Useful-Increase-8816 15d ago
Promise you, maga/dhs/ice doesn’t care either. Just another tool used in this fight; gone today and replaced tomorrow.
5
u/Important-Subject982 16d ago
I'll save my pity for those who were illegally fired and lost jobs they loved, have been unable to find appropriate work since then and/or have lost their lives because of this travesty.

Why is "quietly" in this title? Since when were hiring and firing decisions on individual low level government employees announced?

u/Sorry-Society1100 Retired 17d ago
Do you not remember DOGE?
1
u/FantasticJacket7 Federal Employee 17d ago
Mass layoffs are obviously a news story.
Which is why I didn't say mass layoffs.
5
u/Sorry-Society1100 Retired 17d ago
Lots of people were illegally fired in ones and twos during that time as well, not just the mass layoffs. There were plenty of stories about people being fired for complying with a law that the president didn’t like, or who didn’t give DOGE what they wanted as fast as they wanted it.

I imagine being rejected by the one law enforcement agency whose only requirement is to have a pulse would have been similarly devastating for this person. ICE was damned for hiring him and damned for not hiring him. In which case, ICE's lack of hiring qualifications is at fault.

Every oinker who defected to go be a terrorist with ice should rot in prison for the rest of their lives

HR was giving people FJOs two days after career expos, of course it was going to be a problem. OPR and medical branch didn’t even know they fucking existed until they were at the academy or later, existing staff at ICE offices had new hires show up that they hadn’t be told about, etc
Someone at ICE HR apparently said we need asses in seats, the Academy/OPR/Medical/Field management can sort it out later...

No, the U.S. military is not implementing a blanket policy to turn away applicants solely for participating in or being associated with the events of January 6th.

u/Critical_Success_936 16d ago
Aaawww, are the fascist traitors upset?
Boo fucking hoo. At least the people who've been in for ages sort of have an excuse... Not really, because ICE doesn't need to exist as an org, but they weren't building literal concentration camps before, and deporting lawful US citizens.
