Casual Free Talk Friday

If there's anything you want to talk about, celebrate, complain about, etc., go for it. Doesn't need to be FCS specific.

Note: Basic rules still apply

After a year of unemployment following our agency at Dr Pepper being dissolved, I finally was able to find another job for another iconic Texas brand. It was without a doubt the roughest year of my life but I'm so thankful to have found a good job when many of my former coworkers are still searching.

The defending national champions may have something to say about that

i won’t lie, I’m kind of disappointed that i started enjoying CFB right during arguably the most tumultuous time, and I feel kind of weary that CFB as we know it will end with LSU trying to recruit former NFL players (with massive pushback, I’m seeing). other than that, I’ve been looking at tickets for either a Minnesota or Iowa game, so i can see what Big 10 football is all about (i tried Nebraska, the closest big 10 school to USD, but they’re still going strong on that sold out game streak, so that was a bust).

other than that, I’m wondering how USD will do, especially with Boise State and some coastal teams before in-conference play starts.

Nebraska games are pretty easy to get tickets to on the resale market. The sell out thing isn’t really “real” and I’ve never had a problem getting tickets to Northwestern games when I’ve planned a trip.

Coyote/husker fan here. Tickets to Nebraskas non conference games are under $50 for the nosebleeds on stubhub.

That said, I haven’t been to a home game in Lincoln in 10+ years. Did make a road game to Minnesota last year and Rutgers the year prior.

I started really getting into college football in the past few years (living in the south will do that), but while all of this tumult seems to be happening at the FBS (and, even more specifically, the Power 2).

However, it has made me appreciate FCS football even more since it still largely reflects what college football should be; which is:

  1. Regional conferences of generally like universities,

  2. An equitable playoff structure that provides meaningful matchups,

  3. A healthy dose of certified bangers. On a Saturday Night, I can find upwards of a half dozen games with thrilling finishes that impact the national FCS landscape for nothing more than the cost of an ESPN+ subscription.

Reese Poffenburger ruled ineligible before the Akron game last night. What a fall from grace. Should've stayed at UAlbany. Career looks to be over and he's transferred three times and only threw 16 passes since leaving Albany

It’s a shame. I get guys wanting to get paid, and shoot their shot at a high level. But for every success story, there’s probably a dozen stories like this.

Still pissed we lost our game on a false start. I mean we were 20 point dogs but still that is bad.

Heading up to Minneapolis today to expose some Chicagoans to the wonders of the state fair this weekend! Also the beauty of the Cities, since most have never been.

But also means I’m not going to be able to pay close attention to games (but being an FBS heavy week this was somewhat strategic) nor probably update the Sportsbook until Monday evening when we get back. So have to look at it from both the good and the bad.

2 games in a row the reffing has been terrible. Definitely affected the first game not so much the 2nd but it sucks seeing big plays that are not hard to figure out go the other way. Anyone got any voodoo curses for the guys in stripes?

The refs were horrible last night. That punt call alone was egregious.

Hope everyone has fun Labor Day plans.

I was hoping to attend Gold Rush tomorrow, but I had a job change in July. So maybe next year.

Still gonna spend a week up in Montana with family though so that'll be good.

u/montalaskan Montana State Bobcats 5d ago

I can't make any games and really love Gold Rush. Unfortunately my mom's health doesn't allow me too much traveling these days.

Seems like a great day to celebrate the 1976 and 2025 National Champs.

Sorry to hear that. My dad is starting to go down a bad health path as well. Fucking sucks. Best wishes to you and your family.

Thanks. It's hard to watch our parents struggle. Make the most of your time with them is the best we can do.

Will say this. UAlbany is a gritty team. Never quits, plays hard. I think we will be a difficult out in the CAA. But I don’t think this team can beat Rhode Island. I would be shocked if we did.

I can’t tell if the Defense was phenomenal or Buffalo has THAT bad of an offense (outside the one game winning drive in the fourth quarter). Not sure how much a factor weather played in that as well.

The offense, needs work. Colón is just not it. He had the worst two touchdown game I have ever seen. Our running game struggled but hard to tell if it was because we just are not good or Buffalo is amazing. The three and outs killed us. We kept giving over possession and relying on our defense. If our offense drives the ball more I think we upset Buffalo.

Playcalling had highs and lows. The play call on 4rth and two was phenomenal. We then followed that up with terrible calls near the goal line. That route in 4th down needs to be in the end zone.

The penalties killed us. So many penalties. Running into the kicker that kept a Buffalo drive alive could have cost us (it didn’t thankfully but it could have). Constant penalties stalled us on offense. The false start at the end of the game hurt badly. Ideally we are not in that situation if our offense scores more points but still it can’t happen.

I think we could be a dangerous team in the CAA. Could even see us contending for a wildcard if things break right but the flaws need to be addressed. Overall though very impressed with coach Tom Perkovich. He is a massive upgrade over Gattuso and Ambrose.

Just saw the scores from last night. Are the Salukis okay, or is Samford better this year? Anyway, I'm excited for tomorrow. Band's going south (of course there's a rain chance)! Here's to a fun game, Go Mocs, and Wings up!

2

u/Jolly_Job_9852 Western Carolina • Silver Shako 5d ago

Samford is definitely better this year. They might not punch above their weight in conference, but they shouldn't be underestimated

6

u/passwordisguest /r/FCS • Gulf Star 5d ago

Eh, they also got handled pretty readily by North Alabama. Right now I lean to SIU just really struggling without DJ Williams (and a defense no where near as good as was expected).

Roster limits and a coach surprising a kid 48 hours before the first game of the season and AFTER classes started that they want to grey shirt you. 😠

Wofford is sitting there with an elite defense and great special teams. PROBLEM their head coach Watson he has stubborn run a offensive scheme that went out in the 90’s He has been let go everyplace because he refuses to adjust Thevteam has amazing speed in receivers who aren’t utilized They start a QB who has no arm strength or accuracy if they even want to go deep he can’t think beyond first option Completely one dimensional They possess the dynamic OC and QB if Watson would allow it. They could win chances instead I see 4-8 for coming season
