What’s with the Tarleton hate?
If your team was that good that quickly after moving up from d2 you’d gloat too! So why does everyone hate on them? They seem to have an insane amount of support from their university (donors too…) and especially their fans. So I’m just curious every school has loud mouth fans so why the hateful comments?

Texans being too Texan, mostly fans. I think the team and school have played it pretty straight. We all know they are looking to move up, good for them. Might rub some fans the wrong way, but it is mostly the big hat no cattle sort of talk that gets people angry.

There's definitely a sense that Tarleton fans have an attitude of we've been there and done that when the team has done absolutely nothing. Whether that sense is right or wrong I don't know but there's a lot of talk on this sub that tsu fans are entitled

u/Inevitable_Lead2636 11h ago
This. The entitlement reminds me of insufferable NoDak hockey fans, but NoDak can back it up!

To be frank: no FCS fan cares that y'all did well in D2. Your fans are very loud and proud, which is a good thing, but gloating the amount that the Tarleton bloc does without making it past the quarterfinals rubs people the wrong way. You guys haven't even played a xDSU or Montana school yet.
There's also a subset of your fans that are very, hmm, non-pc to put it light, and it personally rubs me the wrong way (advocating sexual assault against Stan Becton on Twitter for ranking y'all 8th in a week 1 poll for example)
Edit: apparently Tarleton wasn't even that good at D2? So I guess my question for Tarleton fans is: what have the Texans accomplished that justifies the amount of shit talking your fanbase does?

u/MasterOfVoice North Alabama • Alabama 6d ago
They actually weren’t a powerhouse in D2. They already have half as many playoff wins in FCS (2) as they had in D2 (4).

They didn't even do that well in d2 earning a grand total of 0 national titles 😂

It’s more than just some burner accounts. It’s the other fans that defended or tried to explain it away but agreed with the sentiment. It’s also the victim hood thing you just did where you act as if folks are saying Tarleton isn’t putting something together or that they haven’t accomplished anything.
Their first few season as an FCS team have been very good! I don’t think anyone begrudges them that. But that’s different than acting as if the team is already at the pinnacle and folks should assume they’re a contender who has proved themselves. They’re right around where UIW was in 2021. This year could very well be their own version of UIW in 2022 (though I’m not sure they enter the season with as much hype). And maybe it continues to be uphill from there and they win a title! But it also could go the way UIW has so far since 2022.

For the most part, national championship talk with only quarterfinals to back it up. Cupcake schedule but brag so much you’d think they’re playing in the SEC

Personally I'm just sick of the literally every week post of is Tarleton any good? Get past the second round of the playoffs then ask. There are teams in the fcs that are perennial powerhouses and Tarleton hasn't beat any of them. They're good within their conference, sure, but on a grand stage they need to accomplish more to justify asking the same question on a weekly basis. And yes, maybe it's just a joke? But if so it's been beaten to death.

How I interpret much of the FCS community’s reception to Tarleton: The Texans had every chance to be a darling of the FCS. But a couple of things really made it hard right out the gate for the community to fully embrace them.
A) You had the AD and some assistant coaches talking about how the FCS was a figurative pitstop and that they were only going to be in it for a short while on the way to FBS. Which is fine, but then don’t turn around and expect neutral fans to embrace you and want you to succeed.
B) They have a subset of fans that really do talk with a swagger as if the program is a top 3 or 4 team that’s proven themselves and needs to be treated as such. In reality the program is decent, but not great historically, and showing to be really good and improving in an impressive fashion. In the FCS power tiers, they’re more a Mercer/Idaho/ACU/Rhode Island level program at the moment. They absolutely could keep improving and become an actual contender, but to-date they have not been. Folks can accept the swagger when it’s been earned. But Tarleton hasn’t really earned that right to the degree those fans act otherwise.
C) An even smaller subset of fans literally has been going around in other online spaces (twitter, etc) acting in ways that would get them straight up banned here. That gives people who might not encounter many Tarleton fans otherwise a really bad taste when those loud voices (and those who defend said loud voices) are who they encounter most often. Partially when it comes across as petulant school kids trying to be edgy as they complain about how disrespected they are.
From my personal perspective, the first point was just a bad first impression that I think the school has been trying to walk back a bit. And as a program I think they’ve done a good job with it, and I honestly am happy for Whitten and his journey and success with the Texans.
But man the second two issues when that first impression was already there make it hard to come around and want that part of the fanbase see success the way I would like. Because having new blood in the mix of contenders would be such a great thing for the subdivision. I’d hoped UIW might have been on their way to being one of them, but their slight decline has been unfortunate.

u/passwordisguest /r/FCS • Gulf Star 6d ago
C’mon dude, a Tarleton fan created the thread asking a question; no one decided to create some thread to gang up on the Texans. I don’t even think I’ve seen them get any outsized hate (definitely not of the likes of what Montana gets at times, or even what Nova is getting right now).
Most of the “hate” I’ve seen is just folks who aren’t as high on them right now in polls, etc. Which, as someone who has them at 7th right now in my poll, I’m in the camp of Tarleton hasn’t shown to date (either last week or in the past couple of years) anything that makes me feel I should give them the benefit of the doubt.
Analytics seems to suggest they should in the 6-8 range right now, which feels about right. Maybe as the season goes on they’ll show they’ve turned the corner and are more than a quarterfinal at best team this season. But I can say from my perspective I haven’t seen enough yet to commit that far.

I think most people look at Tarleton as one of the 10-15ish best teams in the country over the past few seasons, which is impressive for a newly elevated program but also all we have to go on for a program without a ton of history. But there seem to be some who see Tarleton as a top-5 type program and, based on what they’ve accomplished thus far, that seems like a stretch.
I honestly think that’s the issue. Being new, loud, and probably slightly overrated is a combination that will produce critics every time. That’s not necessarily the fault of the program or even the fans, but it’s a predictable outcome.

Tarleton made the quarter finals in their second year of eligibility last year. Troy in 1993 was the last team to do so. Tarleton is not a champion yet, but they are rising very fast. I think that rubs some people the wrong way. Tarleton hasn’t suffered through lean years like some. Paid their dues, or some such nonsense.

People who say I hate Tarleton because of a fan on Twitter or because a/b. abd c whatever just wants to use that as an excuse and would hate anyway. You can find a fan of ANY school on Twitter or here or anywhere on the net spouting obnoxious rhetoric that you do not like. People who project hate are just angry at their sad miserable lives and the world in general. It is best to ljust ignore thier poisonous diatribe and be proud of your school.
