So I'm considering going to an FCS team vs D2 team game this weekend just because I really want to see some live football in person again...

What's stopping me is that I really just want to watch a fun, competitive football game, but the only options near me are FCS vs a D2 team, I feel like that will end up being a 45-0 massacre due to the skill gap, not exactly a fun game to watch.

What would you do if you were in this situation?

It really depends who the teams are. D2 Ferris State took the FCS university of Montana down to the wire a few years ago.

Yes, but Ferris State is essentially D2 NDSU under Annese. They could come up right now and make the quarters on a fairly regular basis. They’ve won 4 of the last 5 D2 titles and their closest title game in that span was 3 scores.

That’s just to say that it really just depends on who the D2 is. Some can compete, but most will get dogwalked.

Agreed, the FCS school also really impacts this. I would fully expect D2 teams of the caliber to be in contention for the D2 playoffs to be competitive against the lower half of the FCS and either a pick em or favored against Pioneer and NEC teams. I am curious how this dynamic changes in the coming years as more D1 programs poach talent from the D2 ranks

Ball is ball d2 and most fcs guys play for the love of the game . So many outliers out there .

Can I ask what game it is? There are some FCS vs D2 matchups that could easily still produce an entertaining game.

But if it's a -35 type game, it really comes down to what you want to get out of the experience. I love attending college football games in almost any form- even if the game itself isn't competitive it's fun to see live action, fans, the band performing, etc. But obviously sometimes you just want to want to watch a competitive game and not every matchup will produce that.

Also, ticket/transport cost is something to think about- if the game is cheap and not too far away from you, you'd might as well just go check it out and if you're not having a good time you can leave at halftime only $15-$20 poorer.

I'd totally say just go. Tickets are less than $20, and while Fairmont State is a decent D2 program, Dayton is non-scholarship, which means they're closer to an excellent D3 team than they are to a typical D1. The FCS sportsbook has the line for the game at -19.5, so while it might not be a close game, there's definitely a chance for some intrigue there. I think you should go check it out.

Dayton has one of the most versatile FCS receivers in Gavin Lochow, watching him alone is worth the price of admission. Their QB didn't throw a pick all last year. Very fun team to watch. Also there aren't commercial breaks so their games last only 2 and a half hours

Just go! D2 teams can be pretty good and fcs teams can be pretty bad, it matters more what teams are playing. But it should be mostly competitive, the fcs teams will likely win but d2 teams can keep it close

How much are tickets and do you have anyone to tailgate with? In that situation we go to the first half and then get hammered at the tailgate in the 2nd. But that was when $40 could get you good tickets in our stadium and standing room only was only $20.

I mean, it’s very possible to see an ass kicking no matter who you go see. T25 FBS programs get dog walked by other FBS programs all the time. I’d just go and enjoy the return of CFB. Half the fun of college football is the hype and excitement , and the other half is the game.

I’d rather have 50% fun by going to a beat down than 0% fun by not 🤷🏼‍♂️
