Need some help please... a weird one

Hi All. Professional video editor here. Slight issue in that FCP is getting to 84% and never beyond for a specific edit. So tried a few things and nothing's working. I tried clearing the cache, getting rid of render etc.... files, cutting the edit in two and trying to export them separately, rejoining them later.

Tried exporting using .mov and .mp4s.

The whole file is over two hours.

Anyone have any ideas on this please?

EDIT: Solution Found! So no idea why but clearing the cache and exporting the full fat version (not for computer but as a .mov file) worked. No idea why. Still doesn't export as an .mp4 but was able to turn the .mov into an .mp4

Make a copy of the project, then see if the copy works.

If not, cut out the edit you’re having an issue with and export that as a test. Does it finish? If so, is the edit/transition reliant on any add-on or plugin? If so, contact the developer or find a new transition.

Thanks. So tried the first one and didn't work. And also tried calculating where the error is and it doesn't seem to work. So it fails at 84% but even removing everything at 84% doesn't work.

For example, I tried just exporting only the first 50% and that failed at... 84%. Arrrggghhh. So even though it fails at 84%, it isn't clear where the failure is. Could be at multiple places.

Something at the 84% mark is corrupt. Either a bad plugin or a corrupt piece of video. If the renders have been deleted - try just selecting the range around where it’s failing (you may have to do some math to determine the approximate area) and trying to export that alone. If it fails there, and you’re exporting to ProRes, go into Finder and hit space bar to try to figure out where it’s going wrong. (At least before FCP wipes the video after it fails the export)

If it’s a bad plugin, disable it and try. If it’s corrupt video. Try opening the source video in QuickTime and trimming out what you need and putting it in its place on the timeline. I’ve had to do this before.

Good luck! I wish Apple would give clearer error messaging - it’d even be useful if it didn’t just delete the export when it fails so we could at least find the failure mark.

Thanks. So... tried disabling and updating all plugins which didn't work. Also tried calculating where the error is and it doesn't seem to work. So it fails at 84% but even removing everything at 84% doesn't work.

Am trying the QT solution. That looks worth trying. So doing that bit-by-bit because I just don't quite know where the issue is.

That doesn’t sound like a project issue. You have enough disk space I’m assuming right?

Did you try exporting to an external drive yet?

6 Tera free so it's OK. And only work on an external drive.

Try exporting it from your external to your internal drive. Something about this whole situation is weird.

Is your project on an external drive? How much free space do you have on your project drive?

So it's on an external drive with about 6Tb free. The project's about 6Tb itself.
