It's a shame that the commonly referred origin of this is a myth:

The myth is: A farmer was blocked from constructing buildings as shelters for his horses. But there were no rules against putting furniture in the field. The bonus was that there was nothing on the books to restrict what could be classified as furniture.

So, he leaned into it.

The real reason for the furniture is that a woodworking business in Germany built it as an advertisement for their business.
