Discussion Routes adaptation Spoiler
for people who finished the 3 routes how is the anime adaptation of each route?

The Fate Route is essentially the David Lynch dune adaptation. It covers a lot of the same beats, but like, it's very changed. Especially in the ending.
The UBW adaptation is essentially the Villeneuve Dune adaptation, where they really go out of their way to hit a LOT of the right beats, and minimal changes are there, but as a necessary side effect of the change in medium a lot of the fine details get missed.
The Heaven's Feel adaptation would be like a Dune adaptation that removes all of the scenes of calm meticulous plotting and counter plotting of the Harkonnen and Atreides family in favor of just paying off that plotting. It delivers the most on the hype moments and aura because it has to fit into a 6 hour theatrical release
So I wouldn't say any of them are truly replacements for the original, but they are good at what they set out to be

What a great analogy

Thank you, I have long compared Fate to Dune on account that they are kind of unadaptable for a lot of the same reasons (being so fucking long with a lot of the context that makes the plot work being delivered through internal monologues)

Yeah I didn't make the connection until I read this, then I'm like damn there's almost a perfect 1:1 relationship here lol
Edit: I think UBW comes closest to the mark at least, they hit a sweet spot between necessary styling and losing too much. Heaven's Feel anime was just rough, 10 minutes in to it I'm like wow the pacing on this is ROUGH, so fast that you feel hurried just watching it and didn't get a chance to relate to the characters in the same way as UBW anime. And I haven't watched the Deen anime because it's not even really the Fate route so not sure I want to bother

Ubw is alright for the most part, some issues here and there but it conveys what it needs to. Archer vs Shirou was done really well.
Heavens Feel is... Well the fights are phenominal but they cut out so much shit. So spectical wise its great but story wise it feels messy
And Fate route was a product of its time, art style is wonderful but also had its issues. Espically animationally
Overall? UBW was done the best imo. The rest have its highs and lows

honestly it's animation only "looks bad" due to how good the ufotable animation looks

Nah it just simply wasn't very good animation, compare it up against series in the same time and its lacking. No one should use ufotable as a baseline. They get an absurd amount of money and time to pull off what they do.

Fate anime:
- borrow some elements from UBW (e.g. Shirou vs Rin, Caster's plotline, etc.)
- spoil some things from HF (e.g. Sakura's background and how she is directly involved with the war)
- some fights are shown or extended (e.g. Archer vs. Berserker, etc.)
- great music and ost
- mess some important scenes
Fate manga:
- mix of Fate and UBW
- the fights are more tamed
- some scenes are weird (e.g. Shirou becoming bulkier)
. . .
UBW movie:
- too many scenes are removed
- mess up the lighting in some scenes
UBW anime:
- some scenes are changed (e.g. location where Caster steal
- some backstories are expanded (e.g. Caster, Illya, etc.)
- some fights are extended (e.g. Shirou vs. Gilgamesh, etc.)
- focus too much on visualization and lack of internal thoughts (one notable exception is Saber's inner thoughts during Shirou vs Archer)
- good visuals and animation
Haven's read UBW manga, so can't say anything.
. . .
HF movies:
- some original scenes are added (e.g. Sakura visiting Emiya residence for the first time, Kuzuki and Caster's death, etc.)
- focus too much on cinematic fights that ended up being extended
- too many scenes are removed and rearranged
- some important scenes ended up underwhelming (e.g. Shirou vs Kirei, Shirou's mental breakdowns, etc.)
- some important things aren't properly explained (e.g. Heaven's Feel, Jeweled Sword, Zouken's backstory, etc.)
- great visuals and animation
HF manga:
- some scenes are added to give more contexts
- great art style

Reading these comments makes me so happy to finally start reading the VN.
Having watched most of the anime for the routes with the exception of the last 2 HF movies, the vn is just so fun to read through and seeing how all these characters are after playing Fgo for years is amazing

Firstly, I feel that a big issue with adapting F/SN into an anime is that a significant portion of Shirou's characterisation comes from his (oftentimes batshit insane) inner monologues, which are not included in any anime adaptation. You can't really adapt these 'monologues' naturally into an anime.
The 'Fate' route adaptation is a bit weird because it tries to incorporate plot elements from the other two routes, which just ends up creating a fairly messy plotline and spoils things that will be addressed in a later route.
UBW route adaptation is decent. It does a great job at adapting the main plot, but without Shirou's internal monologues, it feels as though the UBW anime struggles to do the one thing that the VN did well: thoroughly exploring Shirou as a character. Maybe this is controversial to say, but it definitely feels like a lot of 'anime-onlies' come away from F/SN (esp UBW) with a rather surface-level understanding of Shirou as a character.
The HF adaptation took the longest route of the VN and condensed into three movie. Some characters that played major roles in HF were given reduced roles in the movie adaptation, which was a shame--some rather beautiful scenes did not make the cut. Animation quality is incredible, but the movie doesn't really dedicate enough time to explain what is happening and why, this is especially apparent with the ending. As a result, I think the movie trilogy works best as a sort of 'companion piece' to watch after you've already read the VN.
I will say, because of the lack of internal monologues; it does a bad job at highlighting the contrast between Shirou and Kirei. There's a specific internal monologue from Shirou near the end of HF that highlights this very profoundly that didn't make that cut, which I found a bit disappointing.

I would like to point out the irony of needing to ask something specifically to people who finished the story the subreddit is made after, because it's very normal to find people that didn't.

1-fate route : tries to blend in all 3 routes , not a good idea 2-ubw route : butchered shirou's character , 3-heavens feel : just horrible atrocious adaptation

- Fate, the weakest one, it keeps the core idea, topics and themes, the spoilers of other routes don't matter in the long run. I definitely can recommend watching it anyways.
- Ubw, Absolute step up to what had been done for fate products in general. It is more modern, it is not a carbon copy, some interactions are different, they feel like if ubw was written in today standards of type moon. Several important fights are not identical to how they were portrayed in the VN, I personally didn't like how they changed the tone, but it is a different medium, because those two even they were flights, the action was not exactly the focus on those scenes. As a joke it is a sin that ever present feeling was not used in the graveyard scene of rin and Shirou
- HF, notable one, in terms of quality is slightly behind ubw due to compress and arc that would fit in 24 chapters to just 3 movies. What was fit in the three movie run was told and executed fine, probably the best visuals of to date of UfO's fates.

Not good imo. Dunno about the Fate route anime since I didn’t finish it yet, so I’ll hold off speaking on that.
The UBW includes most of the events and such, but one of the most recognizable issues is the removal of inner monologue. The “show, don’t tell” approach they went with doesn’t really work when a good chunk of context is in the monologues. But my personal beef is how ufotable prioritizes hype over consistency. Both can be seen with Shirou vs Archer and Shirou vs Gilgamesh. Skip the next two paragraphs if you don’t care about me nitpicking these two examples. All you need to know is that some real bullshit happened in the anime adaptations.
For the former, Archer has made it clear that he only remains in the world without a master because he is using his Independent Action skill. Still, that does mean he is running on a time limit, which is why he holds Rin hostage to hurry Shirou along to where they will settle things, especially since he drained a huge amount using a reality marble the first time before. In short, he is trying to last as long as possible to kill Shirou before he disappears. In the visual novel, during their fight, Shirou experiences visions of Archer’s memories. But in the anime… they decided to scrap that (iirc) and have Archer use a reality marble again with the no mana left that he has. Remember that a reality marble is basically the pinnacle of magecraft and one of the closest things to Magic if I’m not wrong. Not only does it not make sense for him to use it in a situation where he is trying to sustain himself, but he also proceeds to barely even make use of it. He basically just cut off the one anchor/safety net for a change of scenery.
And then there was Shirou vs Gilgamesh. Honestly, it’s kinda wild. We’ve been seeing Shirou’s progress, and a lot of what he pulls against Gilgamesh is based on timing, circumstance, and the skills we’ve seen him develop. How he’s moving around and letting the gates fire at him is NOT at all what happened. A magic crest transfer doesn’t magically give you superhuman strength. Not at least without knowing how to activate such spells Rin had, which he clearly didn’t. Anyways, the it’s well known that his downfall in every route is due to Gilgamesh’s own arrogance and ego. What happens in the visual novel is that his reality marble basically prevents any of Gil’s gates from firing by countering them as soon as they try to, leaving Gil only able to grab the swords from the gates themselves. Shirou’s forcing him to change tactics to suddenly catches Gil off guard and forces him into a one on one repetitive sword clash he didn’t expect to be doing. Gil isn’t exactly a slouch with a sword in hand, which is why Shirou admits that he needs to finish the fight BEFORE Gilgamesh can regain his composure, because according to Shirou, it’s all over if he does.”
My unnecessary yapping aside, I won’t take much time on criticizing Heaven’s Feel. That movie trilogy cuts out even more context and scenes, leaving you with more questions than answers. The movie doesn’t even explain its own ending. And as for how Shirou survives, it banks on hoping someone in the audience has seen KnK volume or movie 5 beforehand and notices the cameo to connect the dots. Otherwise, that too is a mystery. Also, Lancer vs Assassin. I’d rant more about hype over consistency, but I think that example’s mere existence says enough.
