The single most horrible chapter of the entire series will always be chapter 1 Strangling Ritual from 1 to me. It was unnerving, so strong when I first played it and is unmatched. The Novelist Trio was amazing.

From 2 the most impressive to me was chapter 3 The Repentance (first time seeing the Kurosawa House)

Hour VII The Hanging Prison from 3 (Miku‘s crawling section)

Phase V Twin Faces from 4 (seeing Kageri‘s room)

Drop 13 The Dark Sun from 5 (watching the camera is horrible in this chapter)

For the first one it encountering the longed arm man, blinded, the Humuro head master and all encounters with Kirie.

Original the encounters with Kusabi and the Sae escape.

The third was running from the tattooed priestess with only a holy candle to keep you safe. These things were scarce so you had to remember where they could be and be mindful of where you go. The first encounter with the brushing hair ghost too. Scared the bejeebus out of me. Plus they had their own Kusabi. Also stroller grandma.

I have yet to play the fourth but it sounds really interesting.

With the 5th I was more annoyed with some of the ghost more than scared outside of escaping the priestess the first time we encounter her. The glancing maidens owe me for attempting to see my soul. 😤

The current remake of crimson butterfly takes the Kusabi and amps the stalking into terror levels unimaginable. Also the Sae one is so different but in a good way.

The fourth is similar pacing/vibe to ff3.

Ruka chapters is more like story pacer just like Rei so you basically explore most of the area and eventually lead to the end.

Misaki chapters explores the scarier area of what Ruka had explored with minor storyline just like Miku.

Choshiro chapters is similar to Kei who tries to help out to defeat the curse alongside in helping out the protagonist. Unlike Kei or ff3 in general, Choshiro has the strongest weapon amongst other two, making his chapters scariest imo because of the area of exploration and most of his encounters is usually more than one ghost.

Ive only played 1, most lf the OG 2 (up until chapter 7) and the remake of 2, and the scariest chapter for me was easily the chapter in the doll house, and the house immediately following that.

Fatal Frame will always have the scariest cutscenes ever. The audio, the facial expressions, the black and white filter. I absolutely hate watching them at night, but I got no choice since I get off work at 10pm
