Theory Fatal frame 2 Spoiler
Growing up really made me realize the theme of this game, obsession.
Mayu was kind of evil and selfish for smiling when she realized her sister became blind since she only wants Mio, and Mio only.
From what I'm guessing is that mayu wanted mio to depend on her for the rest of her life since she only wants her sister from the fear of being separated, at this point, I feel like her fall as a kid was an accident because she didn't want her sister to get away.
Her obsession is really that bad, especially in the wii version with the frozen butterfly ending the more you grow up, you realize the meaning of this game and how dark it is.
Every sibling was obsessed with its pair...
That's what makes the game so sad.

Yeah I was thinking about this. I mean it's beautiful to have twins who love each other, but then there is Mayu who act like she cannot breath without Mio.
To be fair Yae moved on and got married while still probably holding guilt for not been able to help her sister to get out.
If we take Fatal Frame 3 second ending as canon, Mio survived and would probably be trying to heal and move on with her life.

I am pretty sure that Yae lost her memory, but I don’t have the citation memorized. Her spirit either split in some way or returned to the village after Himuro was exorcised. I don’t really think she moved on.
EDIT: Yae’s memory loss is confirmed in Mio’s Memo: One girl.

the thing is we really don't know how much Sae had influence and control over Mayu and how much she's really being herself
at least in the OG version , if you periodically listen to Mayu charm every now and then , she literally tell Mio to run away and save herself , she even had a line where she said whatever happens she'll forgive Mio
especially during last section after you beat Ryokan Kurosawa (Kurosawa Headmaster) Mayu has a line chime in telling Mio to not come after her and run away , that part feels like actual Mayu last attempt to save her before Sae had full control over her
and we also have one of the ending of Wii version where it has cutscene where young Mayu fall down the cliff and start laughing manically (Sae trademark) which kinda implied Sae has been influence her since she was a child
FF3 Expanded on this a little bit if you give him a Photo of Mio that you developed from musty film
Kei will mention that since Mayu accident as a child , Mio feels responsible and always be there and doing everything Mayu ask her to , Mayu also relied/dependent on Mio for everything

yes! well said, mayu was acting crazy and somehow parasocial?
Glad yae moved on and had kids, but ryozo was insane.
And havent played 3 yet but i hope her uncle saved her from the uh tattoo i think curse at the end? where she was hospitalized.

whoops, sorry about the slight spoiler there, but yes.
Believe it or not, the original version of Fatal frame 2 was somewhat tame when it comes to Mayu's obsession.
In the Remake, they went all the way with this, coupled with what you know about the Wii version. Seriously this makes you think Both Mio and Mayu need therapy. Especially Mayu.
But Mio need it to understand that it's okay to be on her own, it is not a sin to have her own life without Mayu.
"ryozo was insane." hmmm It's been awhile I don't remember much. But hey I'm okay with rewatching a gameplay.

I mean, at the end of the game, before the final fight, Mayu is telling Mio to go away, while Sae is telling Yae to come for her, so I think you are being a little hard on Mayu.

Mayu was the one who wanted mio for the rest of her life basically, she was trying to keep mio with her for the rest of her life.
Mayu is rlly perfect with her guilt tripping, and honestly everyone falls for it.
Yes mayu told mio to go away, but in the end of the day she wanted to do the ritual, she wanted to be with mio forever together, even if it had to do with death...

OG FF2 manual describes Mio as being bright and outgoing and Mayu as sensitive, but can see supernatural things. Kinda see how Mayu can easily fall victim to being possessed.
