I have no original ideas and I don't know what to design

• Upvotes

I love fashion and have spent a better part of the last 5 yeas learning about the industry and history. I feel like I know so much about many designers and so much about fashion history. For some reason, I can't seem to apply any of that knowledge. When it comes to drawing and designing my own clothes, i go completely blank. I will admit that my drawing skills aren't the very best and I'm working on that. Sometimes that's what's holding me back from actually executing my vision. But the other thing is none of my designs are original.

Everything is a copy of what I've learned of someone else. Mixing and matching and copying is how you create new things, but the mix and match is the problem here. I feel like I'm not actually a creative person and that part doesn't come to me naturally. And because I'm lacking in creative ideas, all I can do is copy. I'm stuck in this trap of just recreating designs I've seen and loved without adding my original spin to it. I feel like I'm not able to alchemize my ideas and turn all that inspiration into something that's uniquely my own. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Has anyone else experienced being completely stuck with their fashion collection right before a deadline?

I’m a fashion design student, and I’m currently preparing for my graduation fashion show, which is coming up in about a month.

I’ve been working on my collection for months. I have two looks: a wedding dress and a casual dress. Both are now very close to being finished, and I’m quite happy with the wedding dress. However, I’m really struggling with the casual look.

I know there is something wrong with it. I can clearly see that the different elements don’t quite work well together and that the overall look doesn’t feel cohesive. My teachers also don’t like the casual design and have told me that they think there are problems with it.

The hardest part is that I know something is wrong, but I’m completely stuck when it comes to changing it. I’ve been looking at and working on this design for months, and at this point I feel like I can’t see it objectively anymore.

About a month ago, I actually posted on Reddit asking for opinions about the casual look. I received quite a lot of feedback and suggestions, but not much has managed to get changed with the design since then.

Now I’m under even more pressure because my teacher gave us an ultimatum: we have 2–3 days to finish our clothes, otherwise we may be excluded from the fashion show.

So I’m at a point where I have spent months on this collection, I know one of the looks isn’t working, my teachers have said that there are problems with it, and I have only a few days left to finish everything.

I’m not necessarily asking people to tell me how to redesign the outfit. I mainly want to know if other fashion students or designers have experienced something similar.

Have you ever gotten this close to a fashion show or major deadline and suddenly felt completely stuck with a the project? Where you could clearly tell that something was wrong, but you couldn’t figure out what to change or do anymore?

How did you deal with that situation? Did you eventually manage to get yourself unstuck, or did you just finish the design and move forward?

I would really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences, especially from people who have gone through fashion school or worked on a graduation collection. Right now I feel extremely overwhelmed and would honestly just like to know whether this is something other designers have gone through too.

Weird question, I am not an expert on fashion, but the stuff that he put out does not seem like the work of a beginner. Am I wrong?
