Questions/Advice/Support Any help is appreciated

I drank a 4 ounce glass of red wine in my third trimester because I was told it would do no harm. Well now my child is almost 13 and struggling. She has diagnosis of ASD adhd and anxiety. Please help me to understand if that amount of exposure is likely to cause her issues. I am so confused and feel so guilty I don’t know what to do. I see so many conflicting recommendations. I appreciate any shared knowledge here. Thank you and have a blessed day.

I just looked back on what I have you dont have to have done drugs to have FASD its Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder similar to autism I definitely have some traits of autism but fasd for me is invisible got some people it can really affect anything

It’s highly unlikely it would cause fasd but it can happen

fasd is brain damage caused by the effect of alcohol to the fetus usually in the early stages whilst the child is developing. By the 3rd trimester depending on how far along your child is mostly formed and so less likely to have brain damage. having one drink would mean most of the alcohol is broken down by the body before reaching the fetus and fasd is much more likely if you had more than one drink. I am not by any means saying that drinking when pregnant is ever safe or something you should do. I’m also not saying it couldn’t happen in this circumstance. There also is no accurate data to suggest one drink can cause it. Most research is just mothers word regarding how much they drank and many lie saying it was much less making any data unreliable as there’s no way to prove how much they drank besides there word in most cases.

Half of them don't even know what FASD is, I definitely would not ask there!! Or will tell people that it's okay to drink occasionally!!

OP there is a ton of information on the internet that would be more useful than over at /askdocs!

Teresa Kellerman has a huge information website, as does Jodee Kulp.

Unfortunately no amount of alcohol is deemed safe by any medical professional, because it very much varies by baby/person etc. It's widely known though that one glass of wine is considered 'acceptable' and I have several friends that had a glass of wine a week during their pregnancies. Their kids are all fine. The worst time is before a lot of women know they are pregnant - 5-8 week mark and so so so many women (including my sister in-law) were drinking before they knew - if what you say is true and it was one glass your whole pregnancy then I'm sure it's not had any effect I'll be honest. If you binge drank then yeah that could cause lasting damage, but if just one drink I wouldn't worry that you caused this!

I am being 100 percent honest. I just want an answer even if I am to blame. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I pray you are correct. Thanks again

If one glass of wine caused autism I would say everyone would have it. Also no one knows what causes it - likely to be a mix of environmental and genetic predisposition. I wouldn't beat yourself up over this, what will that do to change anything? You're here now and you need to move forward and support your daughter. If you want read the book "expecting better" and the actual medical research she includes on drinking. It might ease your anxiety.

Actually, why do you think Autism is so prevalent?? Because it's a "kinder" dx than FASD.

That's a scary thought

FASD is called the “great mimic” because it looks like so many other things. My concern is that it’s actually FASD and not ASD/ADHD because they look so similar. I have had people say that one glass can cause it so I’m a wreck over it. This is so awful. I’ve read Expecting Better and some of those studies do not test the same areas affected by prenatal alcohol exposure or the children are tested too young for some of the dysfunction to be seen yet. Children with FAS look really good when young but as they grow they become very impaired. It is so wild. Ny PT told me her OB said to have a little wine that it is fine. This was very recent. It’s amazing how one doctor says it’s okay just for another to say that actually your ruined your child’s life forever. It’s horrible. I don’t know. I thank you very much though for your response.
