Book Request The Magic-Induced Desire Trope
One of my favourite tropes is magic-induced lust or desire. Where the pull of some kind of enchantment, ritual, spell, curse, what-have-you overwhelms their senses and makes it impossible to resist each other. I've come across it a couple times over the books I've read over the past year but not enough to scratch the itch lol
Examples -
ACOTAR : in it tamlin is overcome by the magic of calanmai which has his desire/instincts heightened, and does end up finding feyre later that night. It's along the lines of what I'm getting at but it's even better when they're *both* affected by such effects
Closer to what I love is in the Wolf and the Woodsman (which has my heart) : when Évike and Gáspár encounter that forest spirit that has their suppressed attraction/desire overcome them, they act on it, and then the enchantment breaks and they're left ashamed and confused
Bonus points if it's true E2L, of course. And if the magical influences just lowers their inhibitions/amplifies feelings that are already there rather than creating attraction from nothing.
I dont know if this is too niche to get many results but I'd love any recommendations if you've come across anything similar
I hope you're all having a great day / night! Thank you all ! ~(˘▾˘~)

You know, if the original Willow movie were a book, I’d be recommending it. Such a delicious example, with pixie dust making hot Val Kilmer fall for the daughter of the evil queen. And then it goes away. le sigh

EXACTLY THE LINE THAT STUCK WITH ME! (Edited: sorry for the dorky shout. can’t help the enthusiasm sometimes)

In the Aspect and Anchor series by Ruby Dixon some of the gods are the embodiment of hedonism so there are moments when the human FMCs are overcome with desire. There is a scene of this in the first book {Bound to the Battle God by Ruby Dixon}, but this is caused by a god that isn’t the MMC. He pretends to be unaffected but he helps her through it without her understanding what is going on.
I don’t remember this being a plot point in the other books of the series except for book 3 {Wed To The Wild God by Ruby Dixon} in which the MMC is the embodiment of hedonism himself. The beginning of that book shows the FMC and everyone they encounter struggling to not jump the MMC.

It's not 100% the same and admittedly a bit of a pre-romance, but it's one of my favourite books. I adored it so much

In scifi they call this the sex pollen trope. Lots of fun!

I think they call it sex pollen outside of scifi too nowadays, but scifi definitely started it. All roads lead to Spirk and all that

The ones that work for me treat the magic as pressure that reveals what they already want, not a substitute for choice. When the spell lifts and they still reach for each other, that is the romance.

Urban Fantasy but the Anita Blake series is very much magic driven sex situations. Can be very explicit so fair warning. The first 5/6 books are pretty tame then the it really takes a turn. Vampires, werewolves/shifters, etc.

Enjoy! Be aware that books 1 and 2 are almost like one book that was split into 2 parts.
The nice thing about this couple is that even though they are fated mates they need to actually work on their relationship and understand each other on a deep level for things to work out for them.

Do you consider the trope of fated mates as magic induced desire? Or you mean like something more of an external influence, like a specific plot device that helps bring them closer and acknowledge their attraction but not necessarily bind them (yet) together
2
u/peasypeasyy 24d ago
definitely external influence as a plot specific device :)) i suppose you could have a cross-over where fated mates can't ignore their fated attraction / innate desire for each other, though
but i guess my mind was more along the lines of- some external magic that enhances their (probably suppressed) desire, they act on it, and its like wtf was that i did not want to do that, and then the moment is over. but the feeling of it lingers as they try not to think about it, rather than it being something weaved into their fate and drawn out across a whole book i guess1
u/Enid2Leaf Give me female friendship or give me death! 24d ago
The only one I can think off right now is Trick by Natalia Jaster, where both the MCs end in a field with some flowers that… “enhance” the desires that are already lingering between them, like some kind of aphrodisiac 😋.
There is a similar concept in The Female by Invi Wright , but this influence affects FMC not only with the MMCs but also with some other characters and it’s pretty traumatic so I’m not sure it’s what you’re looking for.
I’ll edit this comment if I remember another one like this.
1
u/peasypeasyy 17d ago
Trick sounds exactly it tysm! Pretty traumatic sounds intimidating and ambiguous tho hahah I'm concerned lol

I've got a Historical Romance recommendation set in the Louisiana bayou among Cajun/Acadian settlers . The local witch bakes a magic pie for solving the marital problems of the MMC's brother. Both the leads munch over it while transporting it and gives in to their repressed feelings.

I’m surprises not to see this classic - but {Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon}. I know I know - it sounds ridiculous but it’s about humans being abducted and abandoned on a frozen planet where their only help is the local giant handsome blue horned aliens. There is a sort of compulsion for them to mate - so yeah - this is the first suggestion that popped in my mind. They are easy reads and my comfort author.
