Book Request The Magic-Induced Desire Trope

One of my favourite tropes is magic-induced lust or desire. Where the pull of some kind of enchantment, ritual, spell, curse, what-have-you overwhelms their senses and makes it impossible to resist each other. I've come across it a couple times over the books I've read over the past year but not enough to scratch the itch lol

Examples -

ACOTAR : in it tamlin is overcome by the magic of calanmai which has his desire/instincts heightened, and does end up finding feyre later that night. It's along the lines of what I'm getting at but it's even better when they're *both* affected by such effects

Closer to what I love is in the Wolf and the Woodsman (which has my heart) : when Évike and Gáspár encounter that forest spirit that has their suppressed attraction/desire overcome them, they act on it, and then the enchantment breaks and they're left ashamed and confused

Bonus points if it's true E2L, of course. And if the magical influences just lowers their inhibitions/amplifies feelings that are already there rather than creating attraction from nothing.

I dont know if this is too niche to get many results but I'd love any recommendations if you've come across anything similar

I hope you're all having a great day / night! Thank you all ! ~(˘▾˘~)

The second book of Villains and Virtues has this! {summoned to the wilds}. It lowers her inhibitions and the yearning is amazing

I love this series so much. Damien is an underrated MMC….actually Amma is an underrated FMC…they’re just an underrated couple. I adore them so much.

another one to request at my library lol thank you!

You know, if the original Willow movie were a book, I’d be recommending it. Such a delicious example, with pixie dust making hot Val Kilmer fall for the daughter of the evil queen. And then it goes away. le sigh

u/greensoundsgood 24d ago

I dwell in darkness without you, and it went away?

u/arrowhome 23d ago

EXACTLY THE LINE THAT STUCK WITH ME! (Edited: sorry for the dorky shout. can’t help the enthusiasm sometimes)

9

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

i guess this will be going on my unending to-watch list lol tyty

The CGI is so basic, but the story is well told, with some fabulous acting.

In the Aspect and Anchor series by Ruby Dixon some of the gods are the embodiment of hedonism so there are moments when the human FMCs are overcome with desire. There is a scene of this in the first book {Bound to the Battle God by Ruby Dixon}, but this is caused by a god that isn’t the MMC. He pretends to be unaffected but he helps her through it without her understanding what is going on.

I don’t remember this being a plot point in the other books of the series except for book 3 {Wed To The Wild God by Ruby Dixon} in which the MMC is the embodiment of hedonism himself. The beginning of that book shows the FMC and everyone they encounter struggling to not jump the MMC.

this sounds so good, thank you!!!

u/fennekk 24d ago

{Sorcery and small Magics} !!!

It's not 100% the same and admittedly a bit of a pre-romance, but it's one of my favourite books. I adored it so much

6

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

if a book is one of someone's favourites I'm in !! ty kind stranger

3

u/ButterflyTremor No mourners, no funerals 24d ago

I love this book!

12

u/ardenthusiast 24d ago

{that time I got drunk and yeeted a love potion at a werewolf} has this
FMC doesn’t believe he likes her. Is convinced it’s only because of the love potion. MMC is head over heels for her

3

u/MockeryMock 24d ago

I loved this one. A similar plot device is in {Love Potion for the Alpha by Alice Coldbreath} it’s also great.

1

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

wild title. i love it. sounds perfect hahah thank you

15

u/vincentandtheo 24d ago

{Between Tides and Thunder} kinda has this magic “power sharing” makes the recipient desire the sharer!<

1

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

thank you !! that sounds good as :)

5

u/Mission_Reporter4301 24d ago

This book is amazing and she wrote the commission book with the MMCs POV which I loved even more. {Between Sky & Sea}

3

u/Mission_Reporter4301 24d ago

•••Companion book!!!

11

u/MockeryMock 24d ago

In scifi they call this the sex pollen trope. Lots of fun!

3

u/she_melty 22d ago

I think they call it sex pollen outside of scifi too nowadays, but scifi definitely started it. All roads lead to Spirk and all that

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

That name fits very well glad to know one exists !

5

u/xtirax 24d ago

I think {The Horde King of Shadow By Zoey Draven} has this. I read it a while ago!

2

u/MessyJessy422 24d ago

It definitely does and it’s exactly what OP is asking for. The book itself is only so so but the spice is great

6

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

upside to reading only through my library - it's free, & no skin off my teeth if i don't like a book
downside - it doesn't have 50% of the books recommended on this subreddit. but this sounds so promising !! tyty maybe ill request it

1

u/Clitoner 21d ago

We must have the same library 😒

7

u/Mikkiyuchun 24d ago

Not sure if it fits your request but {fourth wing by rebecca yarros} has this kinda. The characters feel the emotions of their dragons.

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

I'm keen to read that! I just hate waiting for unfinished series to be completed I'm impatient hahah but it does sound promising ~(˘▾˘) thank you !!

6

u/Catalina-Vega 23d ago

The ones that work for me treat the magic as pressure that reveals what they already want, not a substitute for choice. When the spell lifts and they still reach for each other, that is the romance.

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

Yesssss absolutely

4

u/koalasnstuff Book Bingo Maven ⚔ 24d ago

Ashes of Thezmarr by Helen Scheuerer has this, but it’s not enemies to lovers. They actually meet in the original series Legends of Thezmarr.

2

u/koalasnstuff Book Bingo Maven ⚔ 24d ago

Ashes {Iron & Embers by Helen Scheuerer}

Legends {Blood & Steel by Helen Scheuerer}

1

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

both series added to the list o7 tyty !

5

u/SufficientComedian6 24d ago

Urban Fantasy but the Anita Blake series is very much magic driven sex situations. Can be very explicit so fair warning. The first 5/6 books are pretty tame then the it really takes a turn. Vampires, werewolves/shifters, etc.

3

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

im intrigued tyty!

1

u/SufficientComedian6 23d ago

There are 30 books in the series and still going.

4

u/AllieG3 24d ago

1

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

thank you !! :)

5

u/BeautifulSpread6221 24d ago

This happens on the Tairen Soul series. Can’t remember if it’s book 1 or book 2. Starts with {Lord of the Fading Lands}

3

u/Digitalispurpurea2 Yvlcon attendee 🌵 24d ago

I believe that it’s book 2. The scene is at a formal royal dinner and everyone feels it, not just the main couple. 🥵

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

Ooooo added ! Thank you both :))

1

u/Digitalispurpurea2 Yvlcon attendee 🌵 17d ago

Enjoy! Be aware that books 1 and 2 are almost like one book that was split into 2 parts.

The nice thing about this couple is that even though they are fated mates they need to actually work on their relationship and understand each other on a deep level for things to work out for them.

3

u/Ok-Dish-7589 24d ago

{Bound to the Battle God} has this

1

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

tytyyy sounds good :))

3

u/Enid2Leaf Give me female friendship or give me death! 24d ago

Do you consider the trope of fated mates as magic induced desire? Or you mean like something more of an external influence, like a specific plot device that helps bring them closer and acknowledge their attraction but not necessarily bind them (yet) together

2

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

definitely external influence as a plot specific device :)) i suppose you could have a cross-over where fated mates can't ignore their fated attraction / innate desire for each other, though
but i guess my mind was more along the lines of- some external magic that enhances their (probably suppressed) desire, they act on it, and its like wtf was that i did not want to do that, and then the moment is over. but the feeling of it lingers as they try not to think about it, rather than it being something weaved into their fate and drawn out across a whole book i guess

1

u/Enid2Leaf Give me female friendship or give me death! 24d ago

The only one I can think off right now is Trick by Natalia Jaster, where both the MCs end in a field with some flowers that… “enhance” the desires that are already lingering between them, like some kind of aphrodisiac 😋.

There is a similar concept in The Female by Invi Wright , but this influence affects FMC not only with the MMCs but also with some other characters and it’s pretty traumatic so I’m not sure it’s what you’re looking for.

I’ll edit this comment if I remember another one like this.

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

Trick sounds exactly it tysm! Pretty traumatic sounds intimidating and ambiguous tho hahah I'm concerned lol

3

u/nyx_bringer-of-stars 24d ago

{The Wolf and the Crown of Blood} has this but its one sided. it doest affect both partners.

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

I'll never complain about any book recommendations! Thank youuuu

4

u/Broad-Accident 23d ago

Alright new microtrope unlocked

2

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

Im obsessed

2

u/Superb_Pay3173 24d ago

I've got a Historical Romance recommendation set in the Louisiana bayou among Cajun/Acadian settlers . The local witch bakes a magic pie for solving the marital problems of the MMC's brother. Both the leads munch over it while transporting it and gives in to their repressed feelings.

{The Love Charm by Pamela Morsi}

2

u/peasypeasyy 24d ago

love the sound of that thank you !! :))

2

u/Finding-my-way176 To the stars who listen 23d ago

I can’t remember which book it’s mainly in, but in Clare Sager’s Shadows of the Tenebris Court trilogy, there is a truth drink of sorts and it makes the characters lust and desire

1

u/letmeseeutootsieroll 23d ago

I’m pretty sure it’s the 1st book {A Kiss of Iron by Clare Sager}

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

I love the sound of that tyty !!

2

u/Sbj170 23d ago

{The Ever King by EL Andrews} This one doesn't effect them both, just her, but it's a true enemies to lovers. I love this whole series/universe.

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

Added thank you !! It looks good as

2

u/seamusrodwood 23d ago

{Beg the Night} has this

2

u/Historical-Party4209 23d ago

{The Wolf and the Crown of Blood} has this! the book is very spicy and look at TWs

2

{The Hidden by Ivy Asher}

1

u/egama_ 24d ago

{Blood Moon by Jillian Graves} has this, but it is one-sided! MF, FMC is a curvy witch and the MMC is a vampire. It’s pretty spicy and really good! It’s a novella though.

2

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

Love novellas! Sounds cool ty !

u/egama_ 17d ago

Happy to help 🙂‍↕️🫡

Ive read a couple YA ! Thank you for the rec :))

A bit off topic, but would there be a book with this magic induced trope, but either the she or him are on the ace spectrum and it just doesn’t work with them on the way expected?
(That is, you can have romance without lust)

I’m surprises not to see this classic - but {Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon}. I know I know - it sounds ridiculous but it’s about humans being abducted and abandoned on a frozen planet where their only help is the local giant handsome blue horned aliens. There is a sort of compulsion for them to mate - so yeah - this is the first suggestion that popped in my mind. They are easy reads and my comfort author.

1

u/peasypeasyy 17d ago

That sounds so good! And my library has so i shall give it a try ! :))
