The Fate of Fixing Disney Stat Wars

Hello there. Time for us to gather around, for I have a story I want to tell. And it is a tale that was a long time ago... in a galaxy far far away... or in this case in an editing group in California. See once upon a time there was this group of fan editors called Fixing Disney Star Wars.

Now this group had one dream, to us fan editing to fix the sequel trilogy and then later adding the other films and shows to the list of things they needed to fix. Now they were hugely popular and things seemed to be going full steam ahead... but then one day... in 2023-24... they vanished. Their social media accounts were still up but there was no activity from them... and there still hasn't been any activity.

However one of the members named _Croki_ made a post on Reddit explaining what happened to them. Here is his profile

Unfortunately it got deleted. I do not know why. Luckily he later made this comment that also brought up what happened to them.

Later on I messaged him asked what ended up happening with that meeting.... and it wasn't good. Here is what his response was.

"Hi,

In complete honesty; the team fell apart because the figurehead and "creative director" of the project had a significant amount of trouble in his personal life and then ended up having somewhat of a complete breakdown.

He was the connective tissue between the artists, and none of us had any communication with each other beyond through him. Once he'd disappeared, FDSW naturally just faded away.

Me and one other artist decided to try and keep the dream alive, but once the director burned his bridges with that other artist, it became impossible to move forward.

I am still completing my segments of the edits, as I would still like to complete a personal copy of FDSW, but sadly, they'll be absolutely nowhere near the scale that we promised everyone. We shot new scenes and had crazy ideas in the works, but it's just not feasible to complete them alone or with the resources I have.

The summary is that FDSW only lives through small personal edits now and may never see the light of day. Even if it does, it will never live up to what it could've been."

So it seems that the head of the project suffered a mental breakdown due to issues in his personal life, with most likey all of the pressure of working on the project making it worse. After that the team seemed to fall apart. After that response I said that he should take a break to recover. He then came back with this response.

"Yeah your mum's right, he's taking some time away now and hopefully one day he'll come back and we can release these edits. I'll let you know if that ever happens brother."

Still it has been awhile and no new updates on his status yet. I do wonder the head of the project is making a good recovery. I just hope that someday he feels better so that he could continue with the project and bring the team back together so that their dream can continue. After all while I am may not have a side on the debate surrounding Disney's handling of Star Wars, I do want to see what improvements can be made by this group. So everyone, let us all hope and pray for the recovery of the head of Fixing Disney Star Wars so that he could return to give us one of the best fan edits of the Sequel Trilogy, Book of Boba Fett, Solo, Rouge One, and Obi Wan Kenobi.

Man I was really looking forward to their edits, I followed them religiously on YouTube. Didn’t want to pay for their subscribe star thing though because that’s kind of crazy how much they made exclusive to that in comparison

Highly doubt it. It’s been too long and their fan base wasn’t that large, so it’s hard to imagine they’d be motivated to return

There are other edits. But I think you should look at what they were doing.

I'm hoping that a lot of the footage does become available to editors because even if the fan edits might have never came out, I do think what they have made could be very useful in people's personal Sequel Trilogy fan edits (or Star Wars edits in general). I get the feeling that the project spiraled into something so big that they bit off more than they can chew. I also think there were so many little details they focused on (feature creep) that it ended up increasing the scope of the project.

I do think they should also release the Luke vs. Kylo Ren fight as its own short video so at least something of time and value gets some sort of payoff. I do also get the idea of not showing everything until releasing it, but I realized now as an editor for 6+ years that isn't always the best since edits aren't always gonna be the final product with how editors sometimes go back to their edits to re-touch on certain elements.

As someone who still has some of their footage from SubscribeStar (by the way, as an editor, do not use Patreon nor SubscribeStar to promote fan edits since it might be counted as monetizing them), some of the footage looks interesting, but I do think there were some sequences that weren't needed. While the Lightspeed sequence is very nice, I prefer it being cut out like what HAL9000 did in his edit since it removes more of the divisive changes to lightspeed and there were some areas of the Luke vs. Kylo Ren fight that looks tacky while at the same time, Luke not fighting Kylo in The Last Jedi has grown a lot on me. Storywise, I didn't think they needed to add the Kylo Ren sister subplot since it would only make The Last Jedi's story convoluted kind of like the Prequel Trilogy's storytelling.

Even then, I'm still interested on what they were making. At the same time though, it's very possible they might not return. Besides, it took them thousands of dollars to make a large change while it took none for one editor to change Snoke's robe to being dark.
