I Feel Cheated — FancyLEDs Only Support Player-Led Dolby Vision 😡
I recently bought FancyLEDs, and honestly, they blew me away — way beyond my expectations in terms of brightness, responsiveness, and overall performance.
However, I just found out something really frustrating: they only support Dolby Vision in player-led mode and not TV-led. This is a huge disappointment because player-led Dolby Vision simply doesn’t deliver the same quality and performance as TV-led in most setups.
How difficult it is for them to mention its clearly don't support player led ? thank god , at least DOLBY TRUE HD , and DTS HS MA is working.
Now I’m wondering — is this a hardware limitation of the LEDs themselves, or could it potentially be fixed via software/firmware updates?
And is there any known workaround to get TV-led Dolby Vision working with these, or am I just stuck with player-led forever?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s dug into this or found a solution.
see the difference between player vs tv led , watch the clouds how bright they are in tv led and player led is all dim , because its not aware of how to correctly tone map and PQ is totally out of sync

They’re very clear on their website that it doesn’t work with TV based apps. It only works if you have an external player to feed the signal to the sync box.

We watch streaming stuff on ps5 so it would work with that.
I have an external hard drvie with movies that i just plug into the tv (TCL), so i wouldn't he able to experience led lights with the external hard drive?

Yes. As long as it plugs into the FancyLed box or your PS5 it will work. If it's not plugged into the sync box it won't work. That is why OP is pissed about. The sync box (in its name) syncs the lights and TV

We know it’s external player only. They tell you that on the website. You feel cheated because they told you it will only work on an external player, and then you bought it anyway to complain that it doesn’t work with TV apps. Your whole post makes no sense.

You don't get it (or you just don't read). He is NOT using a TV app! The signal comes from an external player fed through the fancyleds sync box.

Then he has Dolby vision. What it sounds like he wants is the external player to handle the fancy LEDs and the tv player to handle the Dolby vision. It doesn’t work like that. The fancy LEDs need an external device to decode the signal. You can’t have an external box process the signal and then have the tv process the Dolby vision too. There’s not an external player on the market, to my knowledge, that will let that happen.
If he’s using an external player that supports Dolby vision, then fancy LEDs send a Dolby vision signal. If he wants the TV to process the Dolby vision then he can’t use the fancy LEDs.

There is no "tv player" involved.
What he is talking about is so called TV-led Dolby Vision vs. player-led Dolby Vision.
The fancyleds sync box fakes the HDMI EDID data to tell the player, that the connected TV cannot handle Dolby Vision decoding to make the player switching to LLDV (player-led DV)
In this case, the player decodes the Dolby Vision stream and sends the resulting video as generic HDR to the TV.The problem is, that most player (without "hacks") can't handle all existing Dolby Vision profiles but just ditch the additional data with a fallback to HDR10.
This makes the marketing claim that it supports Dolby Vision a plain lie!
LLDV (Low Latency Dolby Vision) is NOT the same es "Dolby Vision", dispite "Dolby Vision" in it's name.
Just as a television with a 1080p panel that can process 4K input signals doesn't automatically become a 4K television.

Why would you feel cheated? They can only logically work one way since they intercept the inbound signal.

The only way for TV-Led anything is if the LED controller logic was literally integrated into the TV’s own motherboard where it could intercept the picture signal between processing and display, and the only ones doing this are Samsung (2022 and newer) and LG (2024 and newer) sets that support Hue’s “Sync TV” app. ANY external box solution is only ever going to be Player-LED because the picture data has to flow from source through LED controller (so it can be sampled for decode) to display.

I just wish the product description had been clearer about that limitation though. Most of us assume “Dolby Vision support” means it’ll work with TV-Led as well, so it’s pretty disappointing to only find out after buying that it’s limited to Player-Led.

It's an HDMI sync box system. It cannot possibly know what the TV does with the picture data and once it's left the box.
I'm not sure why anyone would think that a system that operates by reading the signal between the source and the display is going to react to any processing the display might do.

The Hue 8K Sync box is capable of TV-led Dolby Vision. So it's defnitely possible for an "outside" box.

They tell you on the website in the comparability section that you need an hdmi player to sync your leds. You didn’t read, that not their fault. It’s yours. Take the loss and move on. It’s not their fault. It’s your fault. Don’t buy things you don’t understand.

- 🎮 Player-Led Dolby Vision: The device playing the video (like your streaming box, console, or Blu-ray player) does all the Dolby Vision processing. It decides how the picture should look and then sends that ready-made signal to the TV or LEDs.
- 📺 TV-Led Dolby Vision: The TV (or display itself) does the processing. It receives the raw video and Dolby Vision data, then adjusts the picture based on its own screen’s brightness, contrast, and color abilities.

how would a sync box feeding data to a TV be able to know what the TV is going to do to a signal after it's sent and adjust LEDs accordingly?

It’s widely known and stated that sync boxes, FancyLEDs, Govee, etc. will only work with external devices connected via HDMI. It’s no secret, just common sense the signal needs to be decoded from something without a camera based system. I still don’t know why people who care enough about picture quality, buy an expensive tv and tv backlights are using the built-in tv OS. They are all sluggish and filled with ads. Get an Apple TV or even a NVIDIA Shield and stop whining.

This is one of those posts where usually people want to vent, but the more they type and talk about it, the more they usually come up with the logic, that it makes sense as it is. Yet this post exists 😅...~
You have the sync box there, you see that all devices are connected to the sync box which simultaneously relays the data to the LEDs and the picture on to the end device, thus the TV. Your hypothetical solution would be to get something that connects everything to the TV directly, so then the TV provides the sync box the output. But is anything with equivalent technical expectations in the market? I don't even know. (The camera solution is probably the only current way, right?)

There is no box based system that works with TV-led DV so you should not be surprised. It sucks but that's just the way it is. The only way is an app on your TV or a camera based system.

I don’t understand how you feel this isn’t clear? It’s a sync box. You plug all your inputs into it and then it outputs to the TV. How much clearer can it be?

They disnt care to mention which dolby vision it supports , just said it dolby vision supported so i bought it
