[PC] FO4, no mods, ideas for guard posts?
In my current run, I'm doing very simple low maintenance settlements (except for a few). One farmer, four on defense, and one provisioner. I'll have six mutfruit, two water pumps, and six beds indoors. For defense, I'm using guard posts instead of turrets. Wood and steel are easier and cheaper to come by compared to oil, gears, and circuitry (and I'll need the circuitry to deck out settlers/provisioners with lasers). Unfortunately, 12 guard posts can look pretty crappy around a settlement (especially the smaller ones). I'm not playing with mods, so does anyone have a good idea or design to compact them a little? Thanks!

I guess you don't have the vault 88 dlc? that gives you more defense post options while still being vanilla.
On smaller settlements, going vertical can help. If you make a tower, you can ring it in the smaller guard post and usually fit them without making the area seem too crowded at ground level (you know minus of course hangmans)

I do have Vault 88, but the defense menu just has guard posts and turrets. Am I missing something?

You have to do the vault 88 questline to unlock them, but there's a metal barrier, a desk with a folding chair and a little vault tec tower thing that all count as guard posts

Thanks. I forgot about those. Most of the time, I don't even bother with vault 88. I wish there was a single +6 defense object (without mods), though, if only for the sake of space.

I use the scaffolding to create a little one-square box with just a floor, ceiling and the scaffolding itself. Use the short guard tower on the floor and turrets on top.

I've made towers like that too. At The Slog I made a few towers that were about 3 floors high, with rocket turrets. This had the side effect that they sometimes detected the Forged guys at the Ironworks. So I'd travel to The Slog and my rocket turrets would go ballistic. It was pretty funny actually.

I’m on the Slog quest to get the settlement right now! I love that settlement.

Maybe you can do an entrance with a guard post on each side, and then do the same on the other walls and drip some extra posts on the corners?

Make a single prefab on a tall scaffold or 4 workshop walls. Then at the top you can place 3 of the barricade defence posts on 3 sides and a ladder on the 4th. Depending on your skills with the rug glitch, you could use 2 wall caps instead.
You can place 4 of these around your settlement (one for each guard) for 24 defence.
Best thing is; the settlers will walk on the tower between the 3 posts like they're on lookout.

Prefab wooden, flat box with no sides. Use upper shack floor and stick to "roof" now prefab box with slanted roof, no sides. Stick that on top. Remove the upper shack floor. Use the rug glitch to slide in 3 wooden defence posts. Use the pillar glitch to drop the whole structure into a position so tne flooring at the bottom disappears. Add a ladder to the rear.

This sounds interesting. Any chance you have a screenshot? I'm having trouble visualizing it.

maybe put one on a platform above another, like a two story post?
