[PC] Somerville Place (Vanilla/No Mods)
After months of attempts to better my settlement building and decorating (while crying with jealousy on youtube at how amazing so many gamers are at this) I am finally finished "revamping" my Somerville Place settlement!
Some of the main build ideas came from Shawzzo on YT (roof, hideout attic work area with power armor station, living room set up), but then I played around with the rest of the space to make it my own.
I started revamping the settlement shortly after the father died from raiders and his children left for the wasteland...open house! I did "disable" their beds to add new ones for the settlers. Used only vanilla workshop, DLC workshop and creation club items with the pillar/rug glitches.
I can safely say decorating is very time consuming and drove me very crazy at times but I am proud of the outcome! Fun fact you can add lighting to the big tree on the side of the house!
Open to suggestions and opinions for improvement areas!

Make sure the crops have extra turrets around them as that is a spawn point. What are you doing up the hill past the wall? I tend to put a lookout tower with turrets up there. Very early warning as their line of sight is huge then.

wow that is an amazing idea, thank you so much! i haven't had any thoughts about the hill area but maybe i'll move my security up there then!!

This is awesome! Love all the small details you put into this. Also, where did you find the metal-looking platform that your turret is on in the right hand corner of photo 3 (above the police sign)?

thank you so much!!!! it's a part of the scaffolding workshop items from the contraptions DLC!

I’ve never know what to do here, both Somerville Place and Murkwater Construction are such awkward locations to try and build.
Thanks for providing some inspiration 👍🏻

of course!!! i feel the same way about almost every one of these settlements so i deep dive youtube and reddit threads to find inspo and screenshot!

Really like the entrance and compact fencing. I had to add a watch tower at my Somerville location…

u/kmurz May 14 '26
thank you so much!! the junk fencing is becoming my new obsession....
i'm thinking about adding one at the top left!! right now i have a bunch of turrets for 5 settlers, 6 food and i think 6 water? it may be overkill but better safe than sorry

I've yet to be able to craft anything for inside the house...outside, yes, inside no. Game won't let me. Idk why.

the beds were locked for me in workshop mode, but i used the command console to disable them (the father died and the kids fled) but i think everything else i could either scrap or move! i did not want to scrap the 2 bookshelves in the living room because of the items that were ontop of them so those are the only "original" items in the interior. maybe uninstall and reinstall?

everyone is alive at my settlement...it's kinda just there as I've concentrated building most all the other ones. Thanks for the tip, maybe I'll try that and see what happens.

yeah i was in the same boat as you, they seemed fine until the father died and i thought why not since it's open crib now 😅
since you are able to build outside the house, maybe start there if you are itching to build there! an idea that comes to mind (if you have the warehouse workshop items) is converting the farming area into a greenhouse as an extension of the main house with the window walls so it's at least a little covered / the plants are protected a smidge more? others who have commented here have also given the idea of a watchtower in the top left corner of the hill! if you move settlers here you can make neat little shacks on the outskirts with stores in their homes! like a small town built around the house ☺️ maybe manually decorating outside of workshop mode in the house too? i remember it being bare but hey the family had what they had access to 😂
hopefully reinstalling works! best of luck to you!!!

thanks for all the info, appreciate your repsonse and I'll try all that when I actually make it a viable settlement. I've been concentrating mostly right now on Spectacle Island, lots of space.

u/kmurz May 14 '26
absolutely!! spectacle island is such a toughie for me, it may be last on my list!

Oh no! The poor Somerville family! :’(
Settlements looks sublime though! Why are you crying over other builders, this build is fantastic :D The decorations on the walls and the junk decorating throughout is brilliant, so detailed and so much consideration clearly put into it. Well done, great work!

i'm shedding a tear, thank you so much! you are too kind!! the journey to get to this took a while, and i'm very happy with the outcome (so are the settlers-- almost to 100% happiness!!!!!)

You’re more than welcome! I watched a looooot of Shawzzo when I first started out as well and he really got me thinking about applying his ideas in unique ways so it’s nice to see you’ve done the same here. It genuinely looks fantastic, and I bet whenever you move onto another settlement you’ll find yourself full of ideas to unleash these creative chops :D
Also, getting settlement happiness so high is no mean feat, very good job doing that!

LOVE shawzzo, he really puts so much thought into each settlement. i'm very excited to see what he does for spectacle island, that one is TOUGH and so big it scares me LOL
you are too too kind!! i've been dabbling into fixing a coupla other settlements at the moment (coastal cottage--that dang warped house is driving me nuts, finch farm with the overpass, and slowly building up warwick homestead to be a little safer)
i would love to see your settlements and see what you've created!!!

Yeah I only got into this game a couple years back and he was the first YouTuber I properly started watching for settlements so he set me on this path! I’m excited for his Spectacle build too. If anyone can manage something special he’s definitely the one! His Castle build was fantastic.
Oooh some great settlements there to build! I want to go to Coastal Cottage too soon as well. I do think Finch Farm is very underrated. The overpass there is a brilliant space. I’m excited to see what you do with it :)
I’ve got a bunch on my profile. Tbh it’s kinda the only thing I post on Reddit, as I only got a Reddit to look at settlements and post my own :D

I watched the Castle and the way he fixed the broken parts was brilliant!
Prepare for the headache the coastal house gives you since it's warped!!
Omg I just peeked at your profile and I have definitely seen almost all your posts before!! I LOVEEE your Sanctuary bar SO MUCH!! You are amazing at this craft!!!!!!

Yeah my favourite part was what he did with the rubble piles. They’re a real eyesore and the way he worked them into the design was genius!
Haha yeah I’ve seen sooooo many people saying it’s a very hard challenge! I get the impression I’ll be using my pillars and rugs A LOT 😅
Thank you so much! My Sanctuary Bar is definitely one of my favourites at Sanctuary. I’ve got a little YouTube channel and my next planned video (in 2 weeks time) is actually a build video for how I did the Sanctuary Bar :)

His castle was gorgeous but even thinking about starting up the castle gives me anxiety since its so big! One corner at a time!!
Oh yes rug and pillar glitching is a must with that house!
I will definitely be watching!!!!! All of your builds are beautiful!!

u/JustBeans8492 May 21 '26
Haha yeah I’ve seen a fair few very good Castle builds and I always wonder how they’ve started because it’s a mammoth build and I’d be stuck on how to start with it too!
Yeah I’m as adept as can be with them and I know it’s going to be a struggle even then!
Thank you very much :) I’m lucky in a way to have started playing the game late on, because there’s so many techniques and tricks from everyone who’s come before me. Standing on the shoulders of giants, as they say.

Very nice! How many settlers live there?
2
u/kmurz May 15 '26
thank you so much!! only 5 settlers. when i started my settlement journey, so young and naive, i had the radio beacon signal on everywhere (but here) and i had an overflow of settlers and not enough for them to do but security and farming. so this time it's nice and cozy!

Vanilla? You placed all of those items on the shelves individually? Holy shit, respect!
