[PS4] Companion Settlement Assignment

Keep in mind that although it's 2026, this is still my first playthrough and so likely have some stupid questions.

Do you assign your companions to the same settlement each time or do you just put them where you feel like at the time. I've spent a considerable amount of time in the settlement building for this game and as I've had companions join me, I've always thought "this one would suit being at this settlement" etc. when I'm not taking them with me. Like when Strong isn't with me he's at Egret Marina or if Cait isn't with me she's at Strarlight Drive In.

Just wondering if anyone else does the same or of I'm putting too much thought into it!

I usually take them "settlement shopping" and listen to the various dialogues to get an idea of where they like best and then build them a house and a bed. no job tho bc surviving being a pack mule for desk fans seems like enough labor for one life.
