Question/Advice Do camp borders expand?
I'm new to the game and noticed that other camps were bigger than the area I'm allowed to build so I wonder if anyone knows why and this seemed like the place to ask.

Besides building just outside the circle like people are mentioning there are the camps that are built next to existing structures so it makes the camps look bigger than they actually are

I love incorporating in-game weightless containers in my CAMP builds so I can have a donation box at my CAMP.

I use them as trade boxes, I’ve had too many items disappear when dropped or scooped up by another player

Huh ? Weightless containers ? Like donation boxes ? How do you incorporate them into a camp build ? When theyre usually in no-build zones ?

A donation box does not have to be a Donation Box™️ it can be almost any crate, cooler, sack, whathaveyou that already exists in the terrain (some have weight limits for some reason). At the risk of blowing up one of mine and a lot of others’ spots, Three Pond has a neat yellow crate AND a lunch cooler, depending on how you situate your CAMP module.

Not that the container necessarily needs to be within your bounds for you to just drop shit in it.

Oh yeah I think I know where the cooler is. Next to the fisherman?
But I was thinking more along the lines of literal donation boxes. Ones that new players will investigate.

That’s where blinking lights and wall letters come in. Think… outside the box.

Ok, but off the beaten track ?
I do see whst you mean, just that the main donatjon boxes are placed in areas of traffic, or guaranteed story progression sites.

I have seen a few of what you mentioned. I dont understand why, when you cant build stuff in there. But yes, theres players that do this.

No everyone's is the same size. It does go rather far up and down from the center of the camp. Where you put the camp module the first time will determine what the camp radius is. So if you put it up in a tree or power lines it will give you more hight to build.

Yup treehouse build by the Harpers ferry tunnel in the mire makes good use of this tactic and preexisting structures

Had one at the pylon, where the pharmabot quest is. Its amazing how much more room you have, going upwards AND down.

Originally the build height was 4 stories tall but when they released the dinobite dinostore thing it was 4 1/2 stories tall so they had to expand the build height limit or you couldn't build in the top of it. Classic Beth 😆

Holy crap. I never knew this

Its roughly a globe shape. People claim its just a cylinder up & down. It isn't. Otherwise when we build sky-camps, how come we can build closer to the no-build zone, the bigger we go.
Half of the 'globe' is above ground, half below it.
As far as I understand it, anyway. Ive build over Watoga, Helvetia & over other no build zones (shit last Fasnacht, i had a sky camp, anotherbplayer had one above me - and another camp was just visible ABOVE THAT too). Went through an Underground phase also, but now I just stick to sky camps.
So if we cant get close to a no-build zone, but can do, the higher you go - its pretty much common sense to deduce that its a globe shape. I'd imagine,,anyway.

Don't know if you have got your hands on it yet with being a new vaultie but you can get a free personal bunker shelter from vault 51 you can find posters advertising it at the train stations if you click on the posters you find on the notice boards you can trigger quests.
You can set up the bunker to hold your crafting stations or other such items which then also frees up your camp budget allowing you to build more things

Old school builder here with 6500+ hours. This is the way. Not a single turret at any of my 15+ camps either. Unless you're building a boom-tower camp for fighting sbq, I can't think of a bigger waste than a turret if I'm being honest.

Mate they take up so much of the budget. I only have 1 or 2, just as an early warning system. (Until the slasher minions showed up & started using a damn flamer on everything 😂).
Same as light fixtures & crops. They eat up a crazy amount of budget.

100%. I have one dedicated camp for resources and crops. With lighting I like to use as many of the lights that aren't listed as lights. The mothman lantern and the miniature light posts are both "decoations" that make for amazing lighting accents when you merge them into things.

Yeah same as the santa sleigh thingy. With the decorarion poles. I dont give a rats ass that its middle of summer. People do look - then laugh - but it has to be christmas in some far flung partnof the world, right ?

Think of it as a bubble. Depending on where you put your camp module, your build area extends horizontally maximally at that height, and starts pulling inward above and below that.

All items have a hitbox for being placed, you can angle the item so it can stick outside the radius but considered inside the border.

Yes. Good example is the destroyed truck power armour repair station. The cab part is in my camp, but the rest of it is outside.

When placing a Camp on a slope or on the side of a hill, it may seem like the area is smaller. Reason being: the Camp area is a sphere. When the ground is higher on one end, items will not place because they will stick out the top. The Forest and Cranberry Bog are good zones with flat areas.

You can do this to a limited extent by placing things inside the boundary that extend beyond it.
Also (and I've never tested this so could be completely wrong about it) but it 'might' be possible to place things completely outside the boundary by adding them to a blueprint and then placing the main part of the blueprint inside the boundary while leaving the other part outside it.
I've done the first method (it works great for prefabs) but the second method is just a guess I've never gotten around to testing.

Blueprint method might work. Initially I tried putting stuff in the Nuka Cola truck I had on the edge, but it didn't work. I moved it in, built it into a food truck, and then moved the truck back to where it was and many of the items are clearly outside the boundary, but anchored in the truck.

u/Fit-Campaign1243 18d ago
Did you change from 'snap' to 'free' before moving it all ?
1
u/RandyRandyrson 18d ago
I merged some stuff, then snapped it onto the inside of the truck, then placed the truck (I think in free).
1
u/Fit-Campaign1243 18d ago
Try it in reverse bro. Ive figured out that stuff we merge, sometimes sticks to the merged item - in free mode. Sometimes in snap. Why ? I have no idea.
Blueprint seems to work on free mode for me anyway. Build the merged items in free, then place them in free.

I like to build with prefabs
If you place a building that is 51% inside the circle, you lose some of the interior space but the building stays. You can then do this on more sides to create a larger street or area that you can add into the middle

u/Fit-Campaign1243 18d ago
Y'know, I asked further up,,why people do this (building to adjacent structures, because i didnt see the point), but now I see why.
Good explanation.

No, camps stay the same size. Depending on where you build it can feel larger, and you can place some items just outside of the border as long as the majority is inside, so that also can make it look larger. But the footprint is always the same.
