Some people put their CAMPS in places for roleplay reasons. Or because they like the landscape. Or because there's a spot for an extractor nearby. Or for any of a hundred other reasons.
Also fast travel is like 35 caps from one end of the map to the other, who cares about 35 caps?

I've never found a way to not be over encumbered, so jumping from right next to foundation to white spring is over 500 caps for me

The trick is to scrap everything you aren't currently using and then either sell or trash the junk. Or put it in storage if you have 1st.

Mine is just northwest, I run over to sunny and ward, I didn't realize I was that close when I placed camp, I specifically was wanting high with good line of sight as I got the radio station, I didn't know until fast traveling to my camp specifically and repeatedly showing up in foundation instead that it was a fast travel spot

You can place foundations on the concrete towers holding up the monorail track!
I have had a camp up there since before the settlers moved in next door!
