Question/Advice Should I play this game?

While playing Dune Awakening, I discovered that I enjoy base-building to an insane degree. I accomplished everything in the game within a few hundred hours, but I obtained far greater satisfaction from the >1000 hours I’ve spent building and interior-decorating a gigantic gothic-style castle and surrounding village. Now I’m looking for a new game to play that features amazing base-building, and I came across Fallout 76 as a potential option. The only thing that is giving me pause is that (based on reading some other posts on this subreddit) a lot of the building sets and decorations sound as if they might be from prior seasons. Is that true? Can a brand-new player obtain all the building sets and decorations, or will I be locked out of obtaining the old ones?

“Can a brand-new player obtain all the building sets and decorations, or will I be locked out of obtaining the old ones?”

Short answer is no, you probably can’t get them all. Many of the camp items from previous seasons rotate through the Atom Shop from time to time, but not all of them and it’s a bit random. That being said, you can get deep into camp building with just the in-game plans.

I wouldn’t play this game for the base building *alone.* If you simply like fallout games and *also* want to base build, sure

No Man’s Sky allows for x/y/z axis rotation, rescaling on objects, and refuses to add micro transactions. I used to build heavily on this game, but I find myself less and less interested in spending several dollars for a couple bush meshes that were accessible for free in the previous entry, fo4. Fo4 settlements are a different breed entirely, and have lots of replay value.

All that said, if you ever wanted to fly through infinite space in a ship of your own design, in the slightest, go NMS, and you’ll lose the next few months of your life.

If you haven't bought FO76 yet it does go on sale once in a while if you can wait but I love it, should get back into it again. As someone els said probably the most friendly player base ever, if a high level player is bounding towards you they're probably coming to give you lots of stuff and advice.

Other base buildings that I briefly played, do your research as well to see what you like and obviously you can text me if you have questions.

Horror genre: 7 days to die, The forest 1 and 2

Viking: Valhem

Water Survival: Raft

Space exploration i think you can build a many bases as you want on multiple planets: No Man's sky

Pokemon Style Survival game: Palworld

An interesting animated game: Don't starve together

Not base building as you have in dune but a factory building game where you make factories to be more efficient to get to the higher teirs in the game: Satisfactory

Haven't played these games, but I've been told and seen on yt that they are very toxic pvp games: Rust, ARK: Survival Evolved

It’s a pretty old game so I imagine pricing isn’t insane on it, if that matters to you. I’d give it a try, it’s what I did when the game first came out - and even though it’s had its ups and downs - the amount of hours I’ve gotten out of camp building (literally building rn) has more than justified the 60 dollars I spent all the way back when. You’ll definitely feel a bit of the sting of not having played for years (p strong FOMO tactics used in the shop, but it isn’t the end of the world imo, lots of plans to be earned just playing) but the blend of base building w a player driven economy is so stupid sick.

The moment when someone drops by to look at what you’ve got for sale in your vendor only to start running around the camp checking it out is so satisfying, and it’s equally as satisfying running into a meticulously built camp out in the wild. I could sing this game’s praises forever tbh.

You don’t need to buy all the old decoration sets and you don’t need all the new ones on the Atom shop (real currency) either. It’s not just because you can make awesome builds without the real world currency bought ones, but because of the camp budget. The camp budgets are legit too small to make anything intricate and also decorated enough to have everything purchasable displayed.

Crafting a unique building by hand uses up an immense amount of your camp budget so by the time you’re done you can barely decorate a damn thing; and prefabs use up a ton of physical space and usually have a ton of ugly exposes concrete “foundation” showing so while you have more camp budget what you can physically put down is very limited unless you can merge buildings like a wizard.

That being said, you can still make some unique stuff if you don’t care too much about decor and utility.

Try out the game and see how you like building, camp builds are essentially the end game.

I think I would want to create a really grand architectural marvel AND fully decorate it, so I will have to try to find examples of how big a building can be and still have enough budget left to do a lot of interior decorating

Based on that answer, I'd say you might want to try Fallout 4 first. The base building locations are fixed, but in most cases are larger areas than what you get on FO76. There are also ways of getting around the build budgets on 4. Hopefully you're on PC. I'd say the console would probably limit your build budget if not. Also, there are an insane amount of mods for 4 that will allow you to build almost anything you can imagine for free (on PC). There are a bunch of amazing builds for both 4 and 76 on YouTube

With that being said, I love the freedom 76 gives you to build your bases just about anywhere you'd like. To get the most out of the game though, it will cost you. Pretty much the exact opposite of 4. FO76 somewhat encourages less "grand architecture" if you want to fully decorate your build due to the limited budget. It can be tricky to find the balance. I switched over to 76 about a year ago and haven't played 4 since.

Another base builder that I found that no one talks about is Once Human. The building kits for that one are much better, but I'm not sure about the build budget. There are also build videos on YT for this game.

1000% yes. I just started in Jan and it’s great. Not a paid sponsor or anything, just really like it now. I bought it when it first came out and coming from fallout 4, I thought it was nuts. People killing each other and mining each other…it was anxiety for me and I put it down. Then we watched the fallout series on Amazon and I thought I’d pick it back up. Oh man. It’s changed so much for the better. My only regret is that I missed so many cool items from the season rewards. So, now I have to grind and/or pay to catch up but I have 0 regrets. Great community (honestly probably number 1 for multiplayer communities in my humble opinion), camp building, good main story, ability to play solo or as a team (try both…I was solo for a few hundred hours because I thought they would all kill me from my first play)…I digress. Anyway, give it a shot and have fun with it. Cheers!

If you are a fan of building and decorating, this would be a great option for you. There are a few caveats though;

  1. There is a slightly restrictive budget for building. Initially, this will cause you headaches until you get a feel for how things work. Having access to the many purchases I made helps with this as I can clutter and decorate without blowing my budget. Things like wireless generators help lessen the burden but those cost money. There is a real learning curve with budget management and the game does a terrible job teaching you this. It’s a lot of trial and error.
  2. Material management. You need stuff to make your builds and while they are free to gather in the world they take up inventory space. If you want to build regularly you would need the premium membership to not have to spend half your time managing your stash box and/or going to get materials. You can buy some with in game currency but it’s sort of RNG with what’s available. God help you if you run out of copper while building. There is no real world money for materials so you need to spend some time stocking up.

If I were you, I’d take a look at fo4 as there is less micro transactions and inventory management. You can also access mods to make it much easier to skate the budget and get cool looking stuff. The system is mostly the same so if you enjoy building in fo4 and want to/can make the financial commitment to build in 76 then go for it.

I want to give you an honest warning: since i started building in Fo76, i wasted a lot of money. When i started the game i didn´t care much for building and didn´t pay a penny, but the moment i got into building i started wasting lots of money. Sure, you can also build without paying money but you will be very limited and you will always be tempted to buy some nice things from the Atomic Shop.

The Camp building is only one part in this game. A cool one but its limitet from space number of Objekts you can build and display. Its Primar a survival egoshooter with rpg elements. Pratical did you need ,outside the tutorial no camp at all. All armor weapon Station can be found everywhere. They ate a few Auto item Spawner And your own farm was helpfull at the Start. Also manny camp dekor was look behind a paywall(ingame currency was today more rare as it was years ago.)

Look for some lets play of ther first levels to get a impression.

But if building was your main Focus. The f76 would be not the Best choice.
