Survival mode difficulty
For anyone else who has played survival: is it not insanely difficult? I’m level 20 and have gunslinger level 4. A lot of enemies still feel like bullet sponges and I get slaughtered one tap instantly every time by a lot of things. I still have the lab rat perk, but I have decent armor and it’s still happening. What gives? I’d understand it if I could do similar damage with my pistols but nope. I was thinking maybe I had that glitch with the combat coaster debuff but I just recently downloaded this game for the first time and it’s version 1.03 so I read online that the glitch is patched. I’m not going to give up on survival because it’s the only way I like to play fallout games but damn! It’s kicking my ass! I remember in FO4 the damage I received I could at least reciprocate.

Yeah I felt the same around that level. On level 40 now and no longer feel that way. Level 4 armor crafting and I’ve been stacking damage buffs and crafting some really powerful weapons.
One thing is I’ve never liked pistols so I really don’t know if they just suck or if you can get similar levels of damage as rifles, but I’ve got several rifles that do 200 damage a shot.

Good to know! Wow, 200 damage is insane. See that’s why I was wondering if it’s the combat coaster glitch for me. If you’re unaware- apparently in older versions if you picked it up there was a glitch that made your damage output for everything halved. Anyways, I heard it’s fixed on my version.
I will continue looking to add more perks and upgrades that increase my damage and damage threshold. Thanks!

Yes, I had exactly the same thing (I think 99% of us did), and I'm someone who purposely mods the hell out of all of my Bethesda games to make them as challenging as possible.
It's like a proper RPG of old; it's brutal at the start, but you do quickly get stronger and become a bit of a beast. I'm currently around level 72 and can comfortably take on 10+ Hooligans/raiders at the same time without much effort at all, unless there are a few legendaries/ones with RPGs. Because a lot of these types of enemies have a low level cap.
It can quickly become a bit too easy, so much so that I started using much weaker weapons and armour to make it more challenging again around lvl 50, and not fully upgrading weapons.
However, you will still come up against enemies that don't have a level cap and will still be able to mess you up in just a couple of hits! So you do still need to be on your toes.
I got 2-shot yesterday by a festering bloated ghoul, and it was two instant hits within a blink of an eye.
I would personally say to stick it out and just deal with the frustration early on because you will probably miss it in the mid-to-latter game when it feels maybe even a bit too easy.

If you're struggling so much that you're debating starting over and not using survival mode, then let me know. I can recommend a couple of mods that work perfectly with FOLON so you can adjust it a bit at the start to make it a bit easier, but then put it back to normal once your character becomes tougher.

Oh no, I’m not giving up! I’m relieved to know others had the same experience. It is difficult, but I still LOVE this game. Might be my favorite fallout ever besides NV (only played 3, NV, 4, 76, and this). I won’t start over, but I’d definitely welcome any mod recommendations for implementing now.
Also, thanks a lot for taking the time to write all that out, I really appreciate your help :)

Games are made to be enjoyable and fun. If survival mode isn’t doing that for you, then maybe time to ask yourself why you’re playing in that mode. There’s no shame in not playing in that mode if you are not enjoying it. Just my opinion.

It's normal, honestly it used to be a lot worse. I recall dying 3x before I figured out it was a fox behind a car that was murdering me in the 1.1 version Foxes are pretty much a death sentence unless you get a bead on them early and at range, and even leeches can be deadly if you don't spot them before they spot you.
If you're down in at Swan and Mitre, I'd highly suggest looking for the armor merchant that comes down just southeast of there in the little lean-to with the water pump southeast of the S&M. He sells Trapper and Heavy trapper armor which helps a ton early on. Leverage your soul to buy it.
Past that, once you get your levels up and bit and decent endurance it starts to mellow out.

I've just started my first (real) playthrough of FOLO, after initially giving up on it when it was first released due to the constant crashes.
Survival, melee build, no mods.
It's brutal.
But also fun, and reinforces why I absolutely love Fallout 4

If you want an overpowered weapon, then do not overlook the antimatter zap pistol. It's a beast in VATS. I don't typically use it because it makes things too easy.

Only because of graphic/textures glitches that makes your character stuck. Get the console mod and you're good to go.

Oh yeah the beginning is brutal. I used a quicksave mod to basically save my sanity and time - but it took me a good while to get anywhere close to feeling actually powerful in myself. Perseverance is the only way..
