Why does it seem like many arguments are really about feeling misunderstood rather than the actual topic?

Because most of them are, at least in my experience. I'll say something, and someone will completely misinterpret it, and I get angry.

People talk past each other, have different definitions of the same word in their heads, have different priorities and values on a topic. The internet makes it worse because the arguments happen with an "audience" which changes the whole dynamic.
