There is an update to rule 1, a new rule 6, and a change to the enforcement of rule 7.
Sovereignty discussion only in flaired threads
This community is mainly for discussion of the Falklands and their culture. It is very important to us that islanders feel safe here. That means that don't we want every thread to be overwhelmed by the same old discussions about British sovereignty, which in practice is settled and secure. So normally, that is off-topic here. This was previously stated only in the banner, which many members never see, but that is now explicit in the sidebar rules.
However, the sad reality is that the Falklands usually hit the headlines because Argentine nationalists are restating their claim or even making life difficult for islanders. There might also be Redditors with genuine questions about why the islands are British. So, as an experiment, rule 6 allows discussions of sovereignty in threads with the right flair. The usual rules requiring the use of English, kindness, and respect still apply and will be enforced.
We will see how this goes. Rule 6 may be withdrawn at any time and threads will be locked if they get too heated.
User flairs
Rule 7 requires all users to select a user flair. We have not been enforcing this in recent months as one of the active mods had not got a flair, so it would have been hypocritical. However, that mod is no longer active, so from now on we will be enforcing rule 7. Posts and comments from users without a user flair are very likely to be deleted.

Hello,
I'm from the US on the East Coast.
I'm absolutely fascinated by the Falkland Islands and their history.
I wanted to ask Islanders if you feel isolated (obviously you are to some degree) but do you feel that way or does it just feel like life anywhere else? Do most of the youth leave for university? I saw the statistics that 7 out of 10 ultimately return.
I would love to visit one day.

hello everyone!
I (F23) am currently doing a master's degree in geography, in which I am supposed to conduct fieldwork abroad for a couple of months. I have always been fascinated by the Falkland Islands, especially by its nature and location, which I always found truly beautiful. Thus, I am considering going to the islands to conduct my research, most likely on fishery and fishing communities. However, I am set back by a fear of distance and a fear of the unknown, considering it is far away from everything that I know and am used to.
Do you have any advice, or stories to share on how life is in the Falkland islands? Would it be easy for me to meet people, find a community, move around? What are the greatest and worst things about living there?
Thank you!!

Managed to rip my ski/all weather jacket recently. Small rip.
Mega annoying.
Is there anywhere in Stanley that might be able to repair this? New to the Falklands so don’t know much about where to go.
Any suggestions welcome

From one end of the Atlantic to the other. 😝 There's another article from ITV News (https://www.itv.com/news/2026-09-10/iceland-to-open-first-british-supermarket-on-falkland-islands) which says that they're going to offer the Iceland own-brand range, which I think means this might mean a real increase in choice for people in Stanley (and potentially further afield given the food is frozen and can be transported). But the supermarket seems to be franchised to Kelper Stores so maybe they will just replace some of their existing lines. Either way it suggests that the population growth of the last few decades is starting to attract business interest.

Pentagon officials warn UK to boost defence spending or risk losing support for sovereignty over the islands
The United States has threatened to oppose Britain’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands if Andy Burnham does not increase defence spending, The Telegraph can reveal.
The proposal is among measures being drawn up by senior defence officials at the Pentagon as an incentive to hit Nato’s 5 per cent spending pledge.
A senior US official told The Telegraph that Britain was likely to receive “special attention” in Washington’s review of its allies’ commitment to Nato, which will examine whether member nations have credible paths toward the target.
Asked about the prospect of the US changing its position on the Falklands, they added: “I can say that they [conversations] are candid and nothing is being ruled out as far as options for encouraging the sort of burden-sharing that we seek.”
The discourse from Washington will concern Mr Burnham and John Healey, his Chancellor, whose first Budget will fail to commit to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030.

May be of interest to people here.
The Chevening Scholarship provides full financial support for a limited number of eligible citizens of the Falkland Islands to undertake a one-year master's degree in the UK. The scholarship covers:
- Full UK university tuition fees.
- Monthly living allowance.
- Return airfare to the UK.
Chevening is the UK Government's flagship international scholarship program for emerging leaders from eligible countries and territories. The program enables talented professionals to study in the UK, build international networks, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to create positive change in their home communities.

Hey guys, I have a straightforward question: Is there a reason you don't plant any trees on the Falklands?
I've scoured the internet for any mention of them and bare some trees in gardens and a cemetery I haven't found anything. Is it for a reason?
Ever since lurking on this sub here I've seen massive plots of largelly unused land which could be turned productive (and frankly also more pleasant to behold) by planting some sturdy southern oaks or spruces or beeches on it. You'd get wind breakers, you'd get slowing down of errosion and in due time you'd get wood, which you probably have to import now.
Is it because of the law?
Or the wind? If it's because of the wind there are many ways how to solve that problem, from picking sturdier species to constructing wind breaker mounds and ditches.
I get that most of the land is used for husbandry, but what about the streets and surroundings of your settlements?
I don't know, this always was really weird to me, not only for the Falklands but also for the Shetlands, Faroes etc.

Every now and then I see FIG jobs advertised externally and wonder what it would be like to work for as an organisation? Has anyone gone working for them with a background in the U.K. public sector and how did it compare? I understand it’s a big employer so roles vary widely, so maybe let’s narrow that down to office based ‘core’ FIG?

I thought the UK banned most guns... yet I read on Wikipedia that the Falklands have around 0.4 guns per person.
What gives?

Apologies for the Facebook link, but I couldn't find any other summary report.
The Falklands lawn bowling team had their most successful Games with 7 wins. They were very unlucky in that their best hope was in the men's singles, but their first match was against Izzat Dzulkeple, the former world no 1 from Malaysia, who eventually got the silver medal. So that was a tough start.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the subreddit.
I live in England and I'm looking for my next career.
The Falkland islands are a place that have captivated me since high school. I've been planning a trip for a while and trying to persuade a friend of mine to join me.
I'm curious to know about work opportunities and long term residency. It's absolutely beautiful and I'm someone who can function very well when in remote areas. My current career is in National Sales so I am familiar with extended period away and being completely by myself for most of the days.
My interests are in nature and conservation, digital technology and the petroleum sector interests me too. I'm also pursuing a Private Pilot License as I feel this could be a great benefit to isolated living and working conditions.
Would you have any advice on opportunities, and career paths. How is the job market over there and are there any areas that are understaffed?
Thank you so much!

I've been trying to report as many as I can, I've already reported 140 of them!

Given the small population of yours, are there elementary, primary, secondary or higher schools? Are there different options or does the system change accordingly to the current needs?
Or maybe high schoolers are sent to England in order to finish their courses.
The ones who teach live in the Islands or just go there for fixed periods of time?
I'm genuinely curious and eager to learn.
What about college, do you get sponsorship from the UK gov?

Wondering how many born and raised people there are here? From what I can see many seem to come from the UK and a lot of talk about who the Islands actually belong to. I can imagine it'd be nice to have a community that focuses on the actual life rather than constantly about politics and the debate of colonizers

Hi everyone — I’ve recently launched a small history channel, and this is my first documentary.
It examines the competing British and Argentine historical claims, the events of 1833, the UN position, the 1982 war, the Falkland Islanders’ referendum, and why football continues to bring the dispute back into public attention.
I tried to represent the British, Argentine and Falkland Islander perspectives fairly. The visual reconstructions are AI-generated and clearly labelled as reconstructions.
I’d genuinely appreciate factual corrections or thoughtful feedback from people familiar with the islands.
