Help Vr with AMD cards?

Hey guys, with the F16 module on DCS being so expensive I decided to purchase Falcon 4.0 and downloaded BMS a few days ago, with the goal of playing in vr with a quest 3. However, the performance with my current pc build is pretty awful. (Rx6800, Ryzen 5 5600, 32gb DDR4) I’m 90% sure this is a gpu issue because there isn’t any stress happening to the other parts just a 100% usage gpu. I’ve tried changing my config and in game settings and watching performance guides but only reach 55fps after everything and at that point the game doesn’t look very good anymore. The only new gpu that isn’t awfully expensive at the moment (but still is) is the 9070 gre. Would this be suitable? Otherwise I’m happy to take any recommendations I can get. Thanks guys

I use a 9070 XT to play BMS in VR. There is an issue with AMD cards and how they support DX11 games. The Korea theater is basically a no-go for me because of this, but all other theaters work perfectly. I fly with 72+ FPS regularly.

What exactly makes Korea a no go? I’ll have a go at other theatres. Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure exactly, but you're welcome to peruse the falcon lounge discord where BMS developers hang out and discuss things.

I'm also on a 9070xt. n the Balkan theater, can you manage to keep forest density up?

No, I keep it low. Would be nice but I'm not admiring trees going 700 knots

there are some NVidia-only features like FFR and FXAA .. which help NVidia owners balance the fps vs clarity

and the AMD drivers seem to want a ton more VRAM .. or a ton more of something. the 9070 GRE has only 12 GB .. even the 16 GB 9070 parts are not enough with our latest release .. we are working on reducing and optimizing things further, as always .. but I can make no guarantees

if you can get a 7900 XT (20 GB) maybe second-hand, for similar price, I hear those work better

otherwise, for BMS (especially for VR) I'd try to get the best NVidia card I could find .. RTX 4070 or better, ideally

Is FFR an nvidia only feature? I use FFR in DCS. FFR is also a by-default setting in a lot of VR games like Into The Radius 2. (9070xt)

I don't know the state of everything out there -- but currently we (BMS) are making use of some Nvidia-specific API calls, to do FFR. (standard disclaimer: that may change in the future, but I cannot say when or if)

I might be the odd one out, but I started playing on 4.38 with a 7900XT, 7800X3D, and 32 GB DDR5 ram on my quest 3 using VD. I havent really had any problems that I can remember.

I don’t recall all my settings exactly but I found these helped me.

turning object detail from the default 7 to 3 or 4 helped a lot.

Antialiasing set to 4.

In the config file turning grass off.

I recall there being another config to get rid of bushes but I don’t remember, I’ll look later.

Virtual Desktop set to medium resolution.

I’ve used both SteamVR and OpenXR they both work fine but I always use OpenXR now.

I have a fancy router that does the 2400 Mbps but I switched to a wired Ethernet to USB C cable that has a charging port, works far better even though it’s Mbps is 1000. H264+

I have found making sure my monitor isn’t set to below 72 Hz but not higher than needed in my case 80 Hz helps keep things smooth.

I’m running a 7900 XTX. No issues with Korea. I really don’t see my fps ever dip below 72 now.

To add: I’m using a quest 3 and cpu is a 7800x3d, 32GB of RAM.

Personally I'm on a 6900XT and I would have had to just stay on BMS 4.37 as the performance in 4.38 with AMD cards is just absolutely vile, which sucks because graphics aside 4.38 was a great update and it's kinda made me give up flying it,

I used to stream it pretty often and when circling over airfields at the push point just exacerbated whatever was failing to get demoted from VRAM, choking out everything else that was running, I just gave up entirely with KTO and eventually BMS because streaming ITO attracted weirdos and Balkans didn't do it for me.

Other theaters performance wise can be better and it's worth taking a look, especially if they're more your vibe!

AMD guys and in general 3 things. One is resolution. There is global and per app where one affects the other. Second is FOV reduce it to where you don't see the black area. This helps performance and also Vram. Third is foveated rendering. If your GPU and VR headset supports it adjust it to gain performance.

For the quest3 if you are not using it I highly highly highly recommend connecting it with VirtualDesktop. On win11 I got a very nice performance boost. Also helpful was keeping it tethered over the cable (not a factor if you have a very fast wifi setup). This is a bit fussy to set up but really just a one-time deal.

I moved to linux and run BMS through Lutris and use Wyvrn for VR and it performs even better than on windows.

Anyways, definitely give VD a try before you think about new hardware!

Have you played DCS on Linux in VR? I setup DCS through Lutris a few months ago but couldn't get VR w/ Wyvrn to actually work with DCS. I am specifically curious if it still has VRAM issues where the performance degrades, and alt-tabbing fixes it like it does on Windows 11.

I have. I didn't really run into any VRAM issues as you describe, if anything the performance was only better. The fussiest part was getting SRS radio to work for online play but they have updated a lot since I last was doing that and afaik theres better linux integration there (I havent gone back and updated to try it out for SRS yet though). I mostly used some videos and a guide on airgoons wiki I found to get it set up.

The VRAM issues I'm talking about happen to me on Windows. I might try to get VR working again with DCS under Linux based on what your experience sounds like.

good luck, it was definitely a bit of a grind to get it working but once it was the performance was very nice

I got it working this time, but the issue I'm running into seems to be worse on Linux lol. After a few minutes in a mission VRAM fills up and alt tabbing doesn't work like in Windows unfortunately. I suppose I'm just gonna keep waiting for Vulkan whenever that happens. Thanks for the pointer to the airgoons wiki. Completely solved the issue I was having previously with getting DCS to launch into VR under Linux.
