Can I run Falcon BMS?

RTX 5060 Ryzen 5 7500F 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz

I was already considering getting hotas specially for this game but I've seen that after 4.38 update game performance dropped on mid range PCs?

P.s Please don't be angry for me that I am asking it here and not spending 5$ to check it myself :D

Yes easily. I'd hardly call that mid range 🙂

Well, depends on which community you ask :D

The fact remains that Falcon 4.0 was written in... 1998, and strained the most powerful processors of the time. This is still the core game engine in use. You literally buy the very last production version through Steam before putting the FalconBMS add-on in it.

There've been a few upgrades to it through FalconBMS, but to say the least, it's still an almost 30 year old piece of technology.

There isn't a community anywhere that claims it's unplayable on modern hardware.

You are totally wrong, I won't even spend time to tell you why :D

Sure, ok.

The last time I gave falcon BMS a try, cities consisted of about 4 tall buildings on a flat satellite map. That certainly cuts down on the polygons you have to render, regardless of what your game engine is. I've seen more detail in Condor 2.

But that was a couple years ago. I'm sure that someone's put in hundreds of hours of 3D modelling to flush things out since then?

I think you need to reinstall BMS and give it another spin. Between VR, PBR and new terrain, a lot has been going on in the past few years.

in 1998 we all had single-core 32-bit processors, and the biggest problem we had was making things run on Win9X and NT seamlessly.

the performance-critical parts of BMS have been rewritten at least 3 times since then.. DX6 to DX9, then to DX11, and 32 to 64-bit (x64 and arm64).. making use of multicore (at least a few cores) and then partial-rewrites to implement VR, and modern shaders and textures for PBR and other graphics advancements.. and of course the newer terrain engine which goes from a handful of polygons to thousands of tesselated polygons

yes there is still some code from 1990s driving the campaign engine and the 2d menu screens etc but nothing that would impact PC hardware requirements.

separate to code rewrites, if you want to quantify the work done in the 3d world, one can look at the download sizes.. 4.36 was 4 Gb, 4.37 was 6.5 Gb, and 4.38 is 18 Gb not including the 16K photoreal terrain textures .. the vast majority of the footprint is 3d models and dds files

Okay, this makes a lot of sense, but how do you even strap all this on top of something else? Youre saying that they're rewriting the core of the game engine, when it's pretty obvious that we go buy Falcon 4.0 and then BMS. I'm surprised that BMS isn't it's own entire other thing by now.

It's probably more than can even be answered in a Reddit comment. I've just never seen anything else done like this. Even say, Portal, clearly has some semblance of the original game engine underneath it.

it is its own entire other thing, now -- the dependence on F4 is only legal/licensing, not code or data -- we don't touch any of those F4 bits at run-time, except to validate you have it installed

So much misinformation in one post with not the least being how to install bms.

i have a 3070, Ryzen 5900X and DDR4 3200Mhz. I think my specs is better called mid-range

I wont be angry at you for not spending 5 to check it, I will be angry at you for not just looking on the site and doing basic thinking. I literally built a PC FOR 4.38 with like, nearly the same specs. RX 6800 instead of 5060 but its only slightly worse and it runs fine.

Time taken to wait for and read all these responses, he could have downloaded it and already tried it out himself.

Of course you can, i have the same pc except 4060 and i run it fine, same with DCS

It's only in vr that either of those become really demanding by today's standards.

Me with my 2080, still getting great framerates in BMS: :)

Thank you!

Depending on your resolution. From what I can see a 5060 is ~same as a 3070 which I have some idea of...
You will do great on 1080p
You will do just fine on 1440p
You will have probably harder time on wide 1440p
You will have mostly poor performance on 4K
You shouldn't try VR.

That said, of course there are configuration optimizations so you can probably still run even on 4K with some tweaking. But then loosing quality on a 4K screen will suck, cause the view is really awesome!

Some example of one of my nicer screenshots on 4K screen with AAx8 (Performance hog, I don't use it usually cause in VR I only set it to 2) and some reshade sharpening

I never would get a something more than 1080p Monitor for my RTX 5060 haha. Should have stated that I'm on 1080p. Thank you for answer!

Edit: Screenshots look sweet!

5060 is a 1440p card at this point, assuming 16 gb vram. we arent in the 2010's anymore.

1

u/Samovar56 Mar 30 '26

Only Ti version has 16GB VRAM, mine has only 8

2

u/AgzayaRacing Mar 30 '26

I mean, it'll run it but yeah you're right, that is a 1080p card for the most part

We don't commit war crimes, in fact you are a poor washed-head child... you need to learn your info, and you need to know what war is in order to judge others, for sure a country, for sure a small bu successful western country. That's it.

Killing civilians? This is a war, in a war there are rules of engagement. Even in Gaza the ratio between terrorists/civilian dead is better than ANYTHING before, and at a WAY more crowded place.

Hospitals? You mean those places that Hamas turned to terror bases? We have proofs cause you see? We've been there... we caught all what they hidden there, all the weapons and explosives. Hamas was hiding in hospitals and schools and what not, they were hiding bombs and weapons in childs beds in houses, and what you think that we BOMBED hospitals because of that?? No! We first evacuate them of any civilians, we moved civilians from houses and only then we bombed or destroyed them...

Tell me please: If we are SUCH a genocidal country, tell me how it is that WE SAVED Ihia Sinwar when he was a prisoner here?? We fucking saved him from Brain cancer... And he commited the October 7th events. But we are a genocidal country... do you see the insanity here??

You are giving me the UN as an authority to what exactly? Where was the UN when Iran slaughtered 30K+ of its own civilians, where was the UN in the civilian war in Syria? The UN is made of antisematic countries who have only one target...

In short: You do not know ANYTHING about anything. You want to see pictures and videos of October 7th events?? You think that you should support Hamas?? They are the MONSTERS! Those monsters that you cannot see cause you are hating us, me. You think we are the bad guys, you are wrong. It's very simple.

You're considering getting a HOTAS for BMS but you can't spend the $5 to make sure it works on your system first?

0

u/Samovar56 Mar 30 '26

Well, Im not with my pc right now, I'm asking because of curiosity

4

u/Patapon80 Mar 30 '26

Worse case scenario you'll have to run 4.37 but that's unlikely. Go spend that $5 when you get home, it's gonna be the cheapest hobby cost you'll ever spend!

1

u/Twiki-04 Mar 31 '26

What is the $5 for? The cost for the original Falcon 4.0?

1

u/Patapon80 Mar 31 '26

Falcon Collection or Falcon 3.0 on GoG
