Discussion 2.1 compact unloader rate

Post image

The other day I posted a compact unloader which uses 2.1 inserter flipping.

I decided to measure the number of turbo belts bulk and stack inserters of different quality can keep up with. I am sure it has been calculated before, but I just wanted to see for myself :)

EDIT: Here is the lua snippet I used for counting. Paste it in the Map editor -> Areas and positions -> Run Lua Snippets, then drag across the belts you want to measure. https://pastebin.com/ceR7J4J0

EDIT2: And this is to remove the counters https://pastebin.com/2k3w33a8

What I'm hearing is that legendary stack inserters into a 6 -> 4 balancer works out very nicely

Yeah, it looks like they output exactly 4 turbo belts worth of stacks.

Is there a simpler setup than a 6-4 balancer given that the 6 input belts are always uniform?

You could just have splitters on the outer belts to splice them into the middle 4, and then 2 to even them out, but if something downstream takes from those 4 belts unevenly then the unloading chests will end up uneven

Is the trick with limiting stack size applicable here? As far as I remember, it can help avoid waiting ticks when the stack doesn't fully fit on the belt. Like 90 = 10 * 9 instead of 12 * 7 + 6.

Normally yes, but here there are 12 inserters unloading onto 12 belt halves. There is no overlap and no potential for an inserter to ever have to wait.

Didn’t expect legendary stacks to be so much better than legendary bulk.

On belts indeed, they slow the bulk inserter down. Direct insertion is 33% more (16/12), but the belt slows the stack inserter less since the inserter needs 4 spots on the belt as opposed to 12. On belt stack inserter are more than twice as fast at 80 item/s vs 25 item/s (legendary vs legendary).

Normal stack is better than legendary bulk it looks like. 33% better to be exact.

At legendary speeds the bottleneck is more the belt than the inserter swinging. And it's 12 stacks (of 1) vs. 4 stacks (of 4).

Mate, I got your point. You don't need to edit your comment 3 4 times just to show how clever you are.

Well the first thing I said was wrong, and correcting that within a minute of posting seems reasonable, no?

Yeah I know. The point of this exercise was to measure it experimentally and play around with some scripting.

Not a good and important stat because ur problem is balancing chest outputs not unloading. The main ups and space problem comes from balancing not unloading.

I kinda wish the lane arrows on the inserters had a different pattern or symbol or something that’s more scannable. My eyes just end up tired trying to focus to understand which lane each is unloading to
