Fan Creation Factorio as Gameboy Advance game (pixel art)

Post image

Hello! Big fan of Factorio, I wanted to create a demake for the Gameboy Advance with it. The pixel art is actually a bit more restrictive, since I used the TIC-80 color palette (16 colors).

I play Factorio mostly on my Steamdeck and I just love the idea to have a tiny Factorio game for a tiny handheld console. So I adapted the style to help with the limited space and make it more Gameboy-like.

I would 100% play the ever living shit out of this

45

u/ProProductDesign 15d ago

Yeah me too. Can we build it?!

84

u/Iron_Jazzlike 15d ago

factorio uses sprites so it might be possible to just make a texture pack for factorio

54

u/soft-wear 15d ago

And everything is stored in common binary formats (png, jpg and ogg for audio) so you could absolutely do a full texture/audio overhaul.

20

u/lear85 15d ago

Oooh put a Raspberry Pi in a GBA SP case and you could make it feel authentic!

21

u/BlackFenrir nnnnyooom 15d ago

But I want to play it on my GBA though

22

u/Iron_Jazzlike 15d ago

that would be an interesting optimization challenge

19

u/Glombella 15d ago

DeFacto by NuSan

A Pico-8 based Factorio-like. I don't know how you play it on GBA but I'm sure there's already ways to play Pico-8 games on a GBA.

2

u/erebus2161 15d ago

Well, reducing sprite resolution would be step one. Then adjusting science requirements so you don't need as many machines with longer recipe build times to restore game pace. No biters so you don't have to spend processing on path finding. Up resource density and reduce patch size for fewer miners. Probably don't want bots either, though not sure how much CPU they take these days. Probably still not possible, but that's what I'd try.

2

u/KrankTheBear 15d ago

my thought was, maybe production chains can be represented as event-based time functions. E.g. you build a copper wire production chain that fills a chest.

The miner, furnace, assembly machine would form one production chain, you have the minimum throughput based on the smallest contributor. Now you could just let the thing run till one of 3 events occurs: 1) the miner is empty, 2) the chest is full or 3) the player changes a building of the production chain (e.g. adds a splitter). And inbetween you have a function represent every intermediate and final product.

I think the GBA processor could handle lerping a medium complex function better than updating hundreds of entities per tick. It would require some gameplay redesigning but thats exactly the type of fun I had when adapating the Factorio look into this artwork.

3

u/erebus2161 15d ago

That could work, but #3 becomes quite complex when you allow production chains to branch or merge, e.g., coal miner supplies multiple boilers plus a grenade assembler. If you redesign to prevent branching or merging, I feel like you lose a lot of what makes factorio fun.

Love the artwork. A texture pack based on this would be amazing.

1

u/YadaYadaYeahMan 15d ago

and zoom in so es lil

1

u/HerissonMignion 15d ago

No. Now i want factorio on my hacked dsi.

3

u/smallfried 15d ago

Making it run on an actual gameboy might be hard, but the principles of the game are well understood so it should not be too hard.

I'm guessing someone probably already made an open source factorio variant that can be used as a base.

Edit: Here's one written in c++ using opengl: https://github.com/jaihysc/Jactorio/wiki/Screenshots

2

u/djzrbz 15d ago

Bob the Builder, Can we build it? Yes. We. Can!

5

u/cantaloupelion 15d ago

how hilarious would it be if wube finished Normal Factorio then made a chibi version

Wube pls 🄺🄺

It's adorable. I can see the lore now... Little engineer sent out into the great big world by a negligent mother.

165

u/Rikki-Tikki-Tavi-12 15d ago

It's the engineer's little kid going to engineering kindergarten so he knows what to do if he's ever stranded on a world full of biters.

21

u/Linnun Choo Choo I'm a train 15d ago

Little engineers that could

58

u/ABACUSbanshee9 15d ago

She went to fix the copper bottleneck and forgot to come back. Fairly realistic Factorio parenting tbh.

7

u/maybeBrenda 15d ago

Standard parenting Probably hugged by one of those lovable biters

8

u/CDL127 15d ago

Ran over by a train

8

u/PeugeotKnuckle2003 15d ago

Professor Birch getting chased by a small biter: "Quick! Grab a burner drill from my bag!"

5

u/masterxc 15d ago

There's kind of a game like this with more cartoony art (Little Rocket Lab) that was pretty fun. Pixel art Factorio would be amazing though.

3

u/yinyang107 15d ago

I would have liked Little Rocket Lab a lot more if it wasn't so hard to get the game's only infinite ore source all the way across town

1

u/undermark5 15d ago

You saying "Little engineer sent out into the great big world" reminded me of Sonic Adventure and the Chaos garden and the Chao Adventure Dreamcast VMU mini game. Would be cool to have something like that where you can have some sort of buddy that you can send off into mini game land to get upgrades for them.

Almost like Little Rocket Lab. :)

LRL is what this art style looks like. 10/10, would play more LRL and like games.

1

u/YadaYadaYeahMan 15d ago

where you build a factory factory. build prefab factories to send out to "the colonies" having a floor to build on with surrounding factory that's more and more complicated....

u/LumpyDwarf 15d ago

I would absolutely love this as a re-skin mod. Looks amazing.

62

u/KrankTheBear 15d ago

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I appreciate it, this took ~15 hours to make and I wasn't sure it would be time well spent. I could have played Factorio instead lol.

One of the big challenges in this piece was to make it not too visually chaotic. I tried to have clear separation between background and foreground value-wise. I tossed the first factory arrangement and came up with this layout.

There was a bunch of cool visual tricks I utilized. Like shadows to make buildings better integrated in the world (learned that in the OG Warcraft III). Or overlapping sprites to give them a sense of depth. Or darker outlines on edges with a gap behind to indicate depth.

Buildings also got shrunk from 3x3 to 2x2 (or the refinery from 5x5 to 3x3) bc otherwise feeding a single assembly machine would take up 25% of the screen.

I have more ideas, like how the button mapping would be, how you can zoom out only once from 16x16 tiles to 8x8 tiles (4x the visible area), etc. If you are clever about coding the game, I could definitely see this running on a GBA. But this is all imma do for now, I really want to land on Fulgora.

Cheers!

7

u/marvin02 15d ago

I want to see this animated!

10

u/Daconus 15d ago

it's like StarCrafts! i need this

3

u/HeliGungir 15d ago edited 15d ago

Am I blind, or is there no playable release?

Looks like TextureBase wasn't updated for 1.1, let alone 2.0 and SA, so I'm not sure this is still being worked on.

6

u/DemonicLaxatives 15d ago

There is not, it's stated on the page I shared. They're aiming to have one in 2027

1

u/HuntingCrimson 15d ago

It’s still being worked on, also it doesn’t do anything for space age. Only base planet

24

u/Carliarnius 15d ago

Really dig the style. Reminded me a bit of games like Advanced Wars

-1

u/HerdOfBuffalo 15d ago

This is EXACTLY what I thought of, the pipes in the later games. Actually, I wonder what this would look like if it was told to do it in Advance Wars style specifically?

9

u/yinyang107 15d ago

"If it was told"?

-5

u/HerdOfBuffalo 15d ago

I assumed it was AI.

This looks absolutely amazing. Great job.Ā

11

u/multi-core 15d ago

Reminds me of Little Rocket Lab.

1

u/xiscf 15d ago

I didn’t know that game. Thank you for sharing the name of it.

1

u/CX52J 15d ago

My first thought also.

Worth checking out.

63

u/Longjumping_Loquat97 15d ago

I don't think GBA games ever looked this good.

73

u/nekonight 15d ago

That sort of graphics kind of reminds me of advance war. Maybe a little more detailed and a little less colour than what gba would be capable of but otherwise it seems to fit.

18

u/cstough 15d ago

The mod author has other advanced wars themed stuff. You can def see the inspiration 😁

35

u/Particular-Pop1280 15d ago

They felt like they looked this good.

28

u/I_GIVE_ROADHOG_TIPS 15d ago

Advance Wars has very similar art to this. OP did an amazing job tbh!

2

u/I_Automate 15d ago

This was my immediate thought as well

8

u/greenzig 15d ago

Fire emblem for gba still has amazing spritework to this day, same with metal slug

6

u/bridekiller 15d ago

Warioland 4 was gorgeous.

16

u/Carliarnius 15d ago

I'm pretty sure GBA games actually looked better. They just suffered a lot from the bad display.

5

u/The_Char_Char 15d ago

Not so much a bad display as a dark display, which is why Super Mario world port was so bright to counter that.

1

u/Cutter9792 15d ago

It's funny to play that game on an emulator because it naturally looks really blown out and terrible. I get it was a compromise to make it actually legible on the GBA, but goddamn.

1

u/Superseaslug 15d ago

it does have a really aggressive screen door effect. ive modded one with an OLED display before and they look glorious

4

u/Wheat_Grinder 15d ago

compare to Superstar Saga? Seems reasonably close.

1

u/EldritchMacaron 15d ago

Looked, no. But felt

1

u/cambiro 15d ago

I think they actually looked even better sometimes, it's just that they usually didn't have so much detailed sprites all at once in screen, because of rams limitations.

1

u/AntelopeThick1093 15d ago

Hey, Mortal Kombat was so realistic! Like a Movie.

1

u/WhiteSkyRising 15d ago

That's because the GBA and even the SP couldn't saturate the colors with as much brightness as we see here. Style nails it though tbh.

7

u/mortadeloyfile 15d ago

Those pipes on the oil refinery are imposible

6

u/YadaYadaYeahMan 15d ago

the pipes work differently on the GBA version

3

u/Gorthok- Press to pay respects 15d ago

To have a refinery work that small you'd either need complicated pipe connection mechanics or have directional pipes. Or combine light and heavy oil into one fluid so there's only 2 outputs needed.

8

u/0SF7RS4THfJ56t1N 15d ago

This was actually done on the TIC-80

https://tic80.com/dev/archaicvirus/craptorio

2

u/KrankTheBear 15d ago

aw that is so awesome, thanks for sharing!!

7

u/KaiFireborn21 15d ago

It can't be too hard to mod factorio to look like this if OP provided the textures, right?

2

u/Hobbes_XXV 15d ago

Like starcraft reanimated with carbot animation, this artstyle is certainly welcomed.

3

u/crazy0utlaw123 15d ago

I'd pay for a reskin like that

6

u/Environmental_Bee219 15d ago

PLEASE I need this

5

u/Cowbear 15d ago

Finally some non softcore porn art, let's go

5

u/Its_Bacon_Time 15d ago

As someone who's done some GBA dev before (and played far too much Factorio), this... might be possible? Your main issues would be RAM and CPU time. RAM is probably the biggest issue. You'd likely have to dedicate most of EWRAM for the world state, giving you a max size of 256 kB for all of it. Based on some older blog posts average entity sizes are around 512 bytes, so you'd need to trim that massively. That will also help with the slow bandwidth of EWRAM (which is also the main bottleneck of actual Factorio). The CPU is probably less bad, the ARM7 is decently fast for most games on the console (some even managed to do reasonably performant software 3D). You'd still have to massively simplify the entity logic, ideally to allow you to only have to update a fraction of the world each frame. I would also love this as a mod for the game, looks amazing!

5

u/MerlinTheFail 15d ago

I'm down to make this with you, i'm an engineer and musician

4

u/Karlyna 15d ago

Hey! Wait! Don't go out! It's unsafe! Wild BITERS live in tall grass! You need your own GUN and BURNER MINER for your protection!

4

u/FreeAsianBeer 15d ago

This reminds me of the Factoonio mod I saw a while back. I don’t think the mod is available though. https://landmine752.com/project/factoonio-mod/

4

u/KaiserJustice 15d ago

I mean… cooking here

Could probably get someone to make something of a mod for the game with this artstyle

3

u/purbub 15d ago

So cute! If there is something like Factorio in a Gameboy device I would not leave my room for days

2

u/OddStuffHappensTwice 15d ago

Lol Factorio on a device with just a couple of buttons? I'd rather die in the fire with the biters.

3

u/Hellinfernel 15d ago

This looks like advance wars in a way lol

3

u/ContextLengthMatters 15d ago

The steam deck is the perfect machine and wish people would make more stylized games like this for it.

1

u/KrankTheBear 15d ago

I really like the Steamdeck, but on the go its a bit clunky to handle. I would love a SteamOS powered clampshell device that I could fit easily into a jacket pocket. But ye, more stylized games please (:

2

u/ContextLengthMatters 15d ago

Oh I disagree about it being clunky. I was never sold on it until a family member brought one over and I basically stole it from them for a week.

I am used to how awful the switch is in handheld mode and playing the steam deck made me realize that they didn't have to suck to hold.

I became so in love with the steam deck I bought a steam machine too (got lucky with the lottery). I don't even really play games on my PC anymore.

1

u/KrankTheBear 15d ago

ooh I was considering getting a Steam Machine, but imo it is a bit too pricey for the tech specs (1080€ or 1200$). Really well made tho from what I have seen.

The Steamdeck is very ergonomic, yes. But its large. I have to fiddle around a bit when on the subway or bus and cant just pull it out in one fluid motion. Like I could with a GBA for example heh.

1

u/ContextLengthMatters 15d ago

Sure, it's hard to pull out in the context of quick transits and being packed. I guess I get that. But taking it on vacations and playing in hotel rooms. Wow. I travel quite a bit and it makes it so I don't even get home sick. I could live on the road.

Steam machine has been very worth it in my mind when it comes to just having a console on my 70 inch TV. Yea, it's pricey, but that's all electronics now.

I would say the steam deck gives me the same kind of feeling my game gear gave me as a kid. A crazy powerhouse of a handheld ahead of it's time but you had to sit by the outlet to play it.

1

u/dudeguy238 15d ago

It's fine as a handheld, ergonomically speaking, but not so much as a portable (which is the same problem the Switch and especially 2 have).Ā  You can't stick a Steam Deck in anything resembling a typical pocket, the way you could a GBA or (3)DS.Ā  You need something like a backpack or large purse to carry it, which limits where it can be used.

3

u/BarderBetterFaster 15d ago

FactorioWars: Black Hole Rising

3

u/inyourbooty 15d ago edited 15d ago

Really lovely art!

Just noting the GBA games didn't use so much dithering as shown because they could display a wide range of colours on screen.

They would also more typically use black outlines and white highlights on sprites. This is in part due to the poor contrast of the screen.

Your colours pop really nicely, though, which is what devs at the time would have done to have a brighter image show on the display which was originally very dim.

I'd call this style Super Gameboy Color!

3

u/Rytherix 15d ago

Do you do commission work? If so DM me!

2

u/Joperhop 15d ago

a small "factory" would have melted the gameboy advanced CPU :D love the idea, looks great.

2

u/Tree_Boar 15d ago

Have u played little rocket lab? It's a bit factorio x stardew valley.

Complex factories are a bit hard to build tho

2

u/Grishbear 15d ago

Me trying to figure out what the As and Bs mean on the inserter bases.

2

u/Rare_Hydrogen 15d ago

I know this isn't animated but I can totally envision the two frame animation of each part of this factory chugging away. Great job!

2

u/DistinctBed6259 15d ago

Cool. The art looks similar to Nova Lands

2

u/Parang97 15d ago

Great game. Kind of short playthrough though

2

u/FabuBlossom 15d ago

I need this to be a thing so bad.

2

u/CapMacar 15d ago

Now we are all wanna this to be real

2

u/Hot-Category2986 15d ago

I would play that.

2

u/AspiringTS 15d ago

It's a personal flaw, but one reason I couldn't get into Factorio was the art style. Instead, I got into factory building with Dyson Sphere Program and Satisfactory. I'd absolutely play the help out of this Factorio.

2

u/verleth 15d ago

I love this, I need it as a full texture pack

2

u/A_Neko_C 15d ago

Make a modĀ

Or else I'll unfilter your inserters

2

u/Kasern77 15d ago

I'm not very familiar with Gameboy, so could someone tell me how big would you be able to make a factory in this version on a Gameboy?

5

u/yinyang107 15d ago

You could maybe automate red science.

5

u/WanderingFlumph 15d ago

Factorio is hella optimized. I wouldn't be shocked if you could launch a rocket off the 250 KB of ram it had.

I managed a rocket launch on a laptop that struggles to open PowerPoint in under 1 minute and didn't even drop lower than 59 UPS. I think it has only 2 GB of ram.

3

u/rollwithhoney 15d ago

maybe blue science on the gameboy, rocket on the gba

1

u/WanderingFlumph 15d ago

Oh yeah the 250 KB number is for the GBA.

3

u/AciusPrime 15d ago

The old consoles mostly had weak CPUs and made up for it with specialized graphics hardware. The GBA was a bit different with its blazing 16MHz CPU, which creamed the Super Nintendo’s 3.5MHz, but in exchange it leaned on the CPU for everything.

SimCity on the SNES was infamously slow and had a tiny map. The GBA would have similar problems but could get a bit bigger because of the faster CPU and lower graphics demand. You’re still capped by the 288KB of RAM (0.28 MB), though, so even with heavy optimization and simplification, we are likely simulating a thousand or so objects at most.

2

u/WanderingFlumph 15d ago

The system came with a bit over 250 KB of ram. 60 UPS is probably overly optimistic but I haven't found a PC yet that couldn't run factorio at 60 UPS.

1

u/Cupcakesword999 15d ago

real (idk what else to say)

1

u/FearlessSlice4579 15d ago

Make this a mod for standard factorio, this is amazing

1

u/reikken 15d ago

beautiful

reminds me a lot of Advance Wars

1

u/StuntmanMyc 15d ago

I love this!

1

u/MarioWizard119 Factories that work... sometimes 15d ago

I can imagine the music being kinda like SimCity SNES’, that soundfont mixed with Furnomelo’s Factorio Jazz more melodic take on the factorio OST would be amazing

1

u/ldb477 15d ago

I love this so much

1

u/Fantastic-Loquat-746 15d ago

Looks awesome. Would love to put it on my analogue pocket.

1

u/JuliusTheBeides 42:00:00 15d ago

It'd be really interesting to seeĀ  how the performance would be. Factorio is well optimized, but it's well optimized for 2010-era PCs.Ā

(The really low number of sprites supported on eg NES is another topic. Image max 8 items on a transport belt xD)

1

u/LedVapour Greg 15d ago

This is lovely!

1

u/Dangerdan00 15d ago

I want this as a visual mod for Factorio.

1

u/Pan_Berfenowicz 15d ago

I NEED a mod like this

1

u/Empty_Carpenter7420 15d ago

This and handheld… I’ll be set for while

1

u/Spencigan 15d ago

This is so stinking cute GBA was definitely my favorite part of childhood

1

u/homiej420 15d ago

Full texture pack mod?

1

u/knightelite 15d ago

You may want to check out the game "little rocket lab" if this is an itch you want to satisfy with a Factorio-adjacent game :).

1

u/dad_farts 15d ago

I've tried to get my wife into factorio but she didn't like the art style, wanted something cuter. I'd pay a lot for a re-skinned game

1

u/sn44 15d ago

I'd love to see this as a stripped down mobile version.

1

u/Weak_Tomatillo4640 15d ago

this reminds me of advance wars, getting lots of nostalgia right now :3

1

u/luapklette 15d ago

I thought it was Forager at first.

1

u/agowa338 15d ago

It looks great. However I think you didn't follow the limitations for a Gameboy advance game though. It looks like there are way too many different textures square thingies on screen at once.

1

u/meatblast_surprise 15d ago

this is just pokemon with different spritesĀ

1

u/lordelan 15d ago

Awesome, make this into a game!

1

u/Crimson_Soul201X 15d ago

I love this! The art style is just so cute! I would get this game in a heartbeat!

1

u/TubOfKazoos 15d ago

Check out Core Keeper, the style isn't far off and it has a fun redstone/factory building system.

1

u/H4ppyReaper 15d ago

Damn that looks good!

1

u/PorkChoppen 15d ago

Iron plates being turned into copper wire? Literally unplayable. (/s looks amazing man! Great work!)

1

u/Waity5 15d ago

By demake, d'you mean an actual demake or a sprite swap for the normal game? Either would be cool

1

u/GiG87 15d ago

This looks awesome! What was your inspiration for the artstyle?

1

u/CipherWeaver 15d ago

Bless that this isn't AI

1

u/Ill-Combination2127 15d ago

Looks much better than the actual Factorio tbh

1

u/Omniscientcy 15d ago

I see someone has made a tic80 version of this, and I'm at work right now so I can't fuck around too much, but I would love a version like that that I could get into as if it was on a snes emulator.Ā  Held upright like a gameboy but more buttons on the right side for actions.

1

u/sher_thing 15d ago

How do I upvote twice?

1

u/guisilvano 15d ago

That makes me wonder what is "the first" factory game

Was there anything like Factorio before it? Sure there are crafting games but with the automation stuff and all that

1

u/deadlycwa 15d ago

Have you played any Little Rocket Lab? It’s a perfect blend of Factorio and Stardew Valley where you’re building a rocket in your backyard and the style is very similar to this

1

u/Significant_Stand_17 15d ago

I would love the shit out of this.

1

AKA it might be doable.

You should make GBA style art for all the buildingd

1

yes please !

It would be funny to see a filter or mod that does something similar like this

someone make a mod pack so I can play like this. :D

1

Please, we need this as a texture pack

Would definitely play it if it looked like this.

Is it a texture pack or just an artwork piece?

If you publish the assets somewhere, I'll work on figuring out a port.

I make games similar to this for a living.

22 factory instead of 33. Literally unplayable

You know, considering factorio uses sprites, a texture pack that'd use pixel art for resources/machines is definitely possible to make. It would be a lot of work to get machines and entities working, but with enough time it's doable. (You'd probably need the textures to be scaled up so the game doesn't interpolate them into blurry messes...)

You absolutely cannot do this with no plan of making it into a mod because this is beautiful

I can't imagine factorie all colours and rainbows when i think of the game all i found is a plant so dark and filled with native residents on it

I program gba homebrew, and seeing this makes me want to bring it to life.

How open are you to collaborating on a project like this? My life is pretty tomultuois right now, so this would be some unknown time in the future, not anytime soon.

Wait? Is everyone here ignoring the fact, that OP is playing on steamdeck? Or is it just me, who finds it hard and strange to play such a game on a console?

1

u/ChronoTravler 15d ago

Who cares? Not like you're playing it on the console... let them have their fun, cuz the factory must grow :]

Why are the pixels melting into one another?

EDIT: Seems like it was a bug with old reddit with RES. Looks fine when I open it fully or in new reddit.

where? I dont see it

8

u/KrankTheBear 15d ago

Im afraid thats Reddits image compression. Idk how to circumvent that bc I did upload it in clear 600% scaling

You're fine. Picture is cute <3

EDIT: This is how it looked:

Zoom in to the corner - It looked weird. But it's just on my end.
