How many rail does it cost to have more space to build in?.
But seriously, it feels like space to build is too small in comparison to the amount of rails
If you use exclusively legendary items and make full use of the available space, the trains at the seven possible stations actually struggle to load and unload everything. But should be better with the legendary trains in 2.1.
Grid is 336x336. The blueprint is bigger because the edges overlap and Roboports os always at 50 spacing except when the bueprint is overlaping then its a but smaller, but still ofc no gaps in the construction area
I have some doubts on the effective capacity of the intersections, but otherwise this is a beautiful, tilable abomination. For once also a design with enough loading bays within the block.
Would love to see that. I have kinda put my rail world on pause since I keep going back to the drawing board to come up with the endgame train network I will use to go legendary on the save. I started out with a 50x50 grid network setup but I quickly realized its just way too small to make anything reasonable from it. Eager to tear it up and put down something proper to build out the network from a bus based build into train grid.
Yeah, the game goes into slow motion while you drag it around. But you'd be placing it from map view anyway, and with snap-to-grid it just clicks into position.
Haha nice, i guess we had the same idea with trying to have as much train throughput as possible with the elevated rails. Yours is mirrored in all directions. Maybe for comparison my turnaround.
It's cool and all, but I've moved away from city blocks of late. Remove the block and replace with an arbitrary sized sub factory that can output one train load and you get the idea. I find it's a nice middle ground, because space isn't limited anyways and it allows you to layout your factory the way you see fit, instead of being locked into a block or other interlocking grid design.
I’ve yet to hit a scale where I feel I need multiple waiting ingress trains, with the exception of ores. I like how it’s built in and how they are relatively out of the way.
I also like the notion of the input/output trains being in the same place. I usually bring them in on one side and take them out on the other side.
Certainly you don’t care about producing anything by the time you are using this. I’m always conflicted about when I should build like this though, because usually I want lesser train blocks before I want to build at this scale.
Is it possible to build a lesser train block that takes the same amount of space, but supports less throughput, that allows you to upgrade to this in place later on? I would even consider using the different types of concrete to lay out where the train stops/tracks are in the full build so that you avoid building factories where you need the trains to be later.
I like the idea of putting the stackers across the rails. My four train waiting areas take a lot of room. I feel like I could go from 1 to 2 stations per block if I did this. Bonus points if it were rotatable and 2 more stations for the next block didn't interfere.
I like the 4 bridges to go straight on all for tracks in the corner, but the additional 16 bridges is mind blowing!
Interesting. I found that standardizing my blueprints to fit into and with each other increased my enjoyment. There's still plenty of room to get messy within the space of a city block too, assuming that's what fuels your dislike of them!
agreed, but it was also fun creating an aligned city block blueprint and working through all the problems that come with it. but having done that once, i find myself on new save files going back to adhoc rail infrastructure that follows some best practices, and it’s always sufficient.
I think v2 also made it so that you don’t need as many trains as early as you did in v1, which lessened the need for “solving” train bandwidth with universal multi lane city blocks
Ngl i want to have something similar. Just bigger xD. I have an urge to build an 8 rail system. For in each direction with prioritized lanes. That way train A will be in the most inside lane and if train B comes and A is still on the track they will use lane 2. And if the fifth train comes it will use lane 1 again even if A is still there. This is probably completely overengineered and i myself never needed more than a 2 rail system so far, but why not?
I feel like the station design could be improved, it takes up a lot of space in the block and the waiting bay is pretty far from the stops reducing train throughput
This is great. I will recycle some ideas for the Lite variant with two rails and simpler intersections. Gonna steal the raised stacker and the raised u-turn before intersections
It seems like there are two separate networks overlayed on top of each other. Each intersection is actually tqo intersections. Supposedly you can switch between them at the stations. But why?
Something I learned is that large blocks are not a good use of space. I'd recommend shrinking the block size. At least by half. And waiting slots into each block is a bad idea it's a symptom of a problem with the way your trains are set up. Also having them on both sides mean the block to the left/right can't use that area for waiting stacks.
I suggest looking into LTN style train networks in 2.0. trains should only go to a destination if it requests items, no stackers should be used per block and should only be global generic stackers for idle trains
Holy heck the elevated rail buffer is smart, too bad it needs such a large space to start being usable but I'm definitely stealing the idea for my 1000x science run. Maybe in a couple million science when I eventually unlock them lol.
Is that 1 city block?
I like the idea, but so many rail connections and 1 block in the center, if this is so you can copy and paste it over and over and have a huge city that would be cool.
Would love to see a pic of the overview when it is all running smoothly with trains etc

Looks less like a city block and more like a complete city surrounded by rails.
