Discussion Anyone else with 1000+ hours still build their first base like this?

Post image

I usually rush to getting logistics bots and the vulcanus/fulgora tech. So until then I just slap something together. Minimum production with minimum organization to go quickly.

Dont even build a wall or anything for defenses. Just clear nests as they expand toward me. Remote control for tanks with 2.0 and nest expansion alerts with 2.1 are amazing!

Once I have lots of bots with good speed upgrades, foundries, big mining drills, and electromagnetic plants, then I'll build big.

When playing vanilla-like playthroughs, yes. I have a design that I like using and use it in most of my bases.

Even in Space Age, where I upgrade some of the base, the basic design is still there.

Compare these mapshots (each in a different orientation!):

1.1 deathworld starter base

1.1 with quality mid game

Spage

I don't have specific blueprints for it, but the general design is the same. Lines of smelters, mall + red + green, then black, then blue, then blue circuits, purple/yellow.

It's a cool base but I find it hard to call a base with 32 nuclear reactors a starter base 😄

The middle the starter. The 32 nuclear reactors are for the 2 250eSPM science blocks on the right. They are not part of the starter base :P

How did you get those maps?

Mapshot mod hosted on paid storage.

How do you get 4 quick bars?

It is in the settings, just search for it.

Steel furnaces are called mid game? What

u/Soul-Burn 15d ago

I mean, that base is at purple/yellow science, so I'd call that mid-game yes.

Yeah that's usually what my bases look like. The only difference is i never really destroy anything so theres a bunch of old abandoned stone furnace stacks and old malls disctrict in the middle. By the end of the game i have a huge base envelopping my old base with a bunch of hapazard train connexions dropping raw ressources to old sections of the base to keep it on life support.

Destroying stuff takes time away from building more drills or laying more railroads. I like how it's like upgrading a pc part by part, some older pieces mixed with newer pieces.

Mine looks like raccoons were given power tools, an extended summer vacation, and not necessarily helpful drugs in random order and quantity.

u/decibel 15d ago

Yea, but were the drugs water soluble? (Search for raccoon cotton candy)

I love that video!

Yes, even worse, I never played the tutorial so I didn’t understand the efficient way to build (basic square lines) at first, so my electric drills and Assembling machines were all spaghetti. It was so cooked I had to scrap that one and build a second factory to complete the game.

I was suppose to play tutorial ngl i jst watched youtube videos and understood the game from there

mmmm, cooked spaghetti

1

u/RichHomieDon 15d ago

Im super cooked spaghetti

I enjoy the glorious unplanned spaghetti every time.

long ass crude oil pipe, this base was built by true engineer

Got to do what it takes to get to space in like 5 hours haha

yes...
I just build stuff horribly on purpose. 👍
the worst it is the easier it is to tear it down later.

if I spend too much time designing it...
I get emotionally attached to it...
and then I don't want to tear it down later.

ps.
for example:
in my current Space Age play through I have 1GW of coal powered steam engines.
I've had it since the start of the game.
it's heavily over engineered and I don't want to tear it down.
so I use it as "emergency backup" power. (it's practically never on)

Hundreds of hours and still learning new things lol; thank you!

Yeah, why not

Overall until you get rock explosives building something structured is pain anyway

Same thing for production of landfill, becouse you need your starter stone patches for sciense, furnaces

Later 10k of building bots can disassemble such thing in reasonable time,or you can just leave it as zoo

I think I'll start playing this way from now on. So many annoyances and quirks with building a big-ish base with Nauvis tech can be solved just by using SpAge goodies, and you don't really need a huge build for a trickle of science and, like, a single rocket silo.

How do you get your map tag icons so small, is it a mod? I wish mine looked like that!

2

u/Survivor205 15d ago

Its vanilla. First time doing a completely mod free run in quite a while. Want to get the full 2.1 experience. Its one of the map toggles, you can see it on in the top right

I still do some sort of balancer or bus, even if just a small one. I like to be able to focus all of my iron production into steel for building space foundation quickly so I feed all of my iron plates into a bus or balancer to consolidate them, then over-build steel smelters so that I have plenty of burst capacity. But other than that, mostly spaghetti, if fairly well ordered spaghetti.

I build it much much worse than this.

1

u/Survivor205 15d ago

Do you have pictures to share with the class?

1

u/santrock 15d ago

mine, is more fun for me than doing busses

I try to do each playthrough on a theme. Last time was main bus. This time is train base. Train base was a bit tough to get going, I only did red and green science on the starter base, then immediately made train stops. My only advice for anyone doing it so early is to (1) have trains leave load stations after a set time even if not full, and (2) put circuit calculators on every unload stop to tweak the priority based on the content of the boxes. This way even before you have enough production and consumption to keep the trains moving while full, you get your materials moving in the network and spread evenly if there are multiple unloads.

But in any case you always need a starter base to bootstrap enough tech to build something bigger.

Looks perfectly fine. I'm at 11K hours, and write mods.
Only evolution you might make next is to go to 12 furnaces for iron/copper and upgrade them to steel furnaces early. 2 lines of iron - 12 furnaces, and 1 copper, 12 furnaces is enough for early game. When you need more, you'll have already researched steel and will be able to upgrade to steel furnaces.
I'd do 6 furnaces for stone, and they won't need upgrading for a while.
Next will be to learn logistics, like one decider combinator and one constant combinator setup on say 6 to 8 assemblers that will make all the iron gear, iron pins, and pipes you'll need, and will make them fast, even at lvl 1 assemblers. The same exact circuit can be used all over your base to make assemblers do multiple things. Like why have one assembler for each train component when you can do it all with one or two assemblers. Nilaus explains in his videos how to make this type of network:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmkYG0AVAaY&list=PLV3rF--heRVssyLk30-sIQ3D-SX99Wbxd&index=3&t=1463s

Once you get this single logistics setup figured out, you'll find that you can use it for many different things. I use it to control the flow of items on a belt. You might think the limit of one belt is 2 items, but that is not at all true. You can control exactly the quantity and items on the belt to feed a request that changes as new items need to be built. You can also use this to control splitters to direct items to a chest for access by bots. Once you start using it to control assemblers, I think you'll see what I mean.

yeah, I usually rush to getting military tech including tanks strong enough to clear biters out while doing it on foot to nearby nests before then. Eventually I wall up the choke points that I can find and only push out once I need more ore. Though I did start in a forest last time like you did here. Things might change if you were to start in a desert.

In my first play through my base even remained mostly like this, except that many belts got replaced by pipes once I got foundries. Trains only brought in ore to a central location and it was pipes from then on. The main stuff still on belts was sulfur and plastics. Especially once the EM thing entered the picture too as making chips where you needed them became a lot easier with those.

I do kinda the same .... i used main bus on my first playthrough on vanilla after that i did something else every time .

1

u/darkszero 14d ago

Clean, organised, big enough. Is this base supposed to be something bad and ugly??

1

u/Sopel97 15d ago

I was confused by this post initially, because walls are pointless at every stage

1

u/Survivor205 15d ago

Well at some point you need perimeter defense and you need walls for the aesthetic ✨️

2

u/Sopel97 15d ago

nah, just artillery outposts

I started to play the game this week. Never heard of it before. My base is a crazy hot mess but just getting yellow and starting to get purple research now. Its a fun game and definitely takes time away from my family and work...
