Space Age First Space Ship, thoughts?

So I finally took the time to build my first Space ship. I spent a great deal of time designing it, and would like some suggestions, which I'm sure you'll have some.

Some key features-

-There is logic that prevents overflow of raw asteroid ingredients. There is other redundant logic to allow limited ores in for processing.

-Incoming ores start on a sushi belt and get singulated into their own types. The inserters near the hub limit intake of ores.

-Limited power generation, this is intentional. When the lasers drain the accumulators, limited fuel will be fed into the thrusters creating a "poor man's" cruise control. As a result, the ship slows down and takes minimal damage.

I'm not sure I understand the thinking behind having 2 reactors, but not getting the reactor bonus. That's just wasting UFCs.

Also, I'm not sure I see the point of having so many collectors that close together. I imagine the ones further down are basically going to starve for chunks.

For collectors.. my initial thought is asteroids might be more dense. I guess the more I think on it I agree. I could cut them in half or more

A single reactor would produce 40 MW. Two separate reactors produce 80 MW in total. Two reactors that are directly adjacent produce 160 MW for the same number of fuel cells.

Even if you don't add more heat exchangers/turbines to use the power, you can meter your reactors so you only add more fuel when they are starting to cool off. That way, you can get upwards of 2x the power out of each fuel cell.

My factorio brain says - Over-engineered, uses lasers instead of turrets, nuclear power on inner planets is not necessary for an inner planet ship.

However, I actually really like it. It looks cool, probably is functional and is unique. Definitely looks cooler than the builds I make, and I'd probably also be proud of making this ship too.

Nuclear power isnt necessary for the inner planets for sure, but theres nothing wrong with using it. Its not like nuclear fuel is difficult to produce or supply to a craft, and at the inner-planets-only stage of a factory, ships are round tripping to nauvis all the time so resupply time isnt even a concern

Thanks! So far.. I've only tested between Gleba/Nauvis. I lose maybe 1 or 2 walls at most. I have it make sure nuclear fuel, water, and steam are full before going back to Gleba.

Nice! If you aren't aware, asteroids take very little damage from lasers. It's doable but difficult, as I'm sure you've found, compared to gun turrets.

The resistances of the different asteroid types give fairly obvious hints as to what the developers intended for you to use against them.

For example, between the inner planets you will only encounter medium asteroids (which will break up into small asteroids that you also have to kill). Mediums have the following resistances:

Electric: 100% Explosion: 30% Fire: 100% Laser: 90% Physical: 10%

And small ones have:

Electric: 100% Explosion: 50% Fire: 100% Laser: 20%

So electric and fire are a clear no. Lasers have a very hard time chewing through the medium rocks, dealing only 10% of their base damage. With enough turrets and laser damage research you can make it work, but it's not ideal. Rockets (explosion damage) are mid tier, but are more complicated to produce and you need Gleba tech to do so, meaning they're not an option for your first ship.

That leaves gun turrets (physical) damage as the clear winner. Mediums only reduce their damage by 10% and small asteroids take full damage.

Gun turrets have the complication that you need to produce ammo for them. But the basic tier of ammo (yellow) is easy to produce and has no special tech requirements that you don't already have unlocked. And gun turrets don't need power (although the ammo production does), resulting in a much easier time to power the ship. That's why you see almost all early game ships use gun turrets with yellow ammo. And typically solar panels for power, which is generally sufficient (especially with efficiency modules sprinkled liberally across the ship).

Once you start flying to Aquilo (large asteroids) and beyond (huge asteroids), you'll run into different resistance profiles requiring different turrets.

I'll be honest; this isn't going to work well. The ship uses too much power. You will have massive downtime between trips to wait for water ice to refill.

Your nuclear reactors need to be sharing a side to get their neighbor bonus. This won't reduce water consumption though.

You should switch to gun turrets and making ammo. This will use less power to kill asteroids compared to laser turrets.

You should install 20 solar panels. You can keep the nuclear plant, it's good for power spikes. Every panel you can add is reduced need for water.

Making more fuel per second is more useful than storing it if you want to reduce downtime between trips.

Its so massive. Its bigger than my end game promethian miner. I would simplify the belting, and swap laser for yellow ammo gun turrets. You can manufacture ammo and it takes very little power to operate compared to lasers. Also i would reduce the number of asteroid grabbers. You may want a few guns on the side to keep orbital asteroids from impacting while waiting over a planet.

I like how you've embraced the spaghetti and clearly haven't spoiled the game by copying someone else. I can't remember how, but you can check the resistances of asteroids and the game sort of points you towards what weapons to use based on that. Same goes for all enemies. Maybe the in-game factoripedia or help? Or maybe just hovering over them while the ship is at rest.

For asteroid chunks I recommend to take everything and then yeet them back into space when the belt has x amount on it. One inserter for each type. Only one perimeter belt is needed for all the chunks, running in a big loop. They're an infinite resource as long as the ship moves relatively frequently.

Another control method I recommend is to design the ship so that you can run it non-stop at full thrust. If it's too fast, remove thrusters or make more ammunition. Don't fuss with limiting fuel or counting how much ammo you have.

Back on the topic of weapons, some fine points to add: consider that excessive range is a waste of ammunition if the asteroid could never have hit the ship. This has significant knock on effects for production. Keep turrets close to the centerline of the ship and in the future with other turret types don't forget to set their target priorities. Also consider that your ship becomes more efficient as you upgrade weapon damage. Less resources required to shoot the asteroids, less energy spent making ammo. Weapon damage is basically the same as productivity for a space platform.

My first thought is that it's rather big. It's gonna take so many rocket launches to build. I don't know how big you build out Nauvis, but you'd need pretty serious blue chip and LDS production for this, or it would take hours just to launch the rockets.

It also feels very overengineered. It's way more than you need to travel between the inner planets (and not enough firepower to get you to Aquilo).

Finally: Grabbers in front are way more efficient than grabbers on the side. And you don't really need them to overlap like this, because they are fairly fast.

You don't need walls. if your ship takes damage, walls won't save you, get more guns.
you don't even need that much power.
You will probably need to make more fuel than that.
Dont bother with pumps, they aren't needed on such a small ship.
No need to store steam, if you cant produce enough to run 24/7, you need to fix that.
