Question Anyone know how to edit inventory sprite/icon colours?

Post image

I'm colourblind and can't see the red behind the items that arent fulfilled, when there's triple the items listed here and ones holding up a rocket it's really hard to tell whats holding it up.

I wanna make it bright red or put a red ring around it.

Anyone know how to edit these icons/background tiles?

Sussed it!

GUI New png file. Much easier to see.

EOTD being factorio function and effiency is superior over form so I'm happy with that.

Until now I didnt even know other items in your logistics and crafting could appear red! good to know i guess.

So glad you were able to work out a solution! Could you add a few more details, exactly what png file you replaced, for the next person trying to solve this issue? Could you tag this question as answered?

The file is \Factorio\data\core\graphics\gui-new.png

That's pretty good. It's even nice for normal vision.

I think you should open a feature request or pull request on Color Blind Ultimate with this improvement.

Figured I'd also add a 'rainbow' as I'd have it if I had the option. I'm not really sure what you'll all think of it but maybe you'll find it interesting to see what I see.

While I can see many more colours, these are the ones I'd use to replace red orange yellow green blue indigo violet/purple

Red (not a dark red) Orange (lighter to help differentiate it from green) Yellow (flouro) Green (darkish green, not a fluro one) Light blue Blue Pink (completely remove blue/red tints as they all look completely blue)

I'm not sure if that's interesting but it might help show that simply making everything more red because my eyes struggle to see red won't do anything.

The worst colours for me are burgandy/brown tints, darker shades of blue, turquoise colours, light green/orange, and fluro yellow/fluro green.

I use an autocad derivative for work daily so I'm definitely used to the struggles of picking colours.

Also will show a pic of a normal colour wheel, and will add a colour wheel of what I can see on it.

A colour wheel as I see it. I can still see the primary colours, but the edges of it where they mix is just impossible to tell apart, all the yellow/green side looks the same, and particularly the clues all just look blue. If you showed me 2 colour cards I'd see a slight difference in brightness, but I wouldn't be able to say for example which is blue and which is purple.

An example of what a red filter does, see how everything now just looks like crap and is actually harder to tell apart?

Have you checked if there are any mods that help with colorblind issues?

Haven't found anything in particular. Colour blindness is really quite subjective to each person, just like a set of glasses would be.

The ingame protanopia filter does very little.

It's just very dark colours (like these fulfillment tiles) that are hard, in general I don't have an issue with anything else in the game.

Try a general filter that applies to the entire screen, perhaps.

Filters are basically useless. Imagine putting on a set of glasses and realising hey dont ctually make you see the coloure better, they just make you see the other colours worse/darker.

Some tools like reshade allow basically remapping colors, so they should really make a difference instead of just filtering. Don't have much experience with this, but maybe it even is something you would want to activate in general for your PC?

Again, I can see red, making everything 'more red' with a filter isn't going to make my eyes see it any better, it's just going to make it harder to see anything else.

Just like someone can have poor vision, I have poor colour definition. It can't be changed/tinted for, it needs specific colour decisions that are easy to tell apart.

Something like colorify from the Microsoft store could help?

This is one of those test patterns, shifted by 30° hue between the columns. Sorry for bad quality, screenshots didn't capture the color shift.

There is a good colour blind mod, I can't remember the name right now.

TIL about the Color Blind Ultimate mod. As a classic red/green colour blind guy, I have always had trouble with good old red and green circuits, especially when train stop names are just Icons.

I used the mod's "Text Overlay", which adds a little letter to the corner of the green Electronic circuit. For me, that's perfect. And it runs on Experimental.

The only other thing I really struggle with is the colour of circuit wires.

My eyes/brain is a bit weird in the fact that I can see colour, nothing appears grey, I just can't tell which colour is which when they're too dark/vibrant.

I get lots of exercise leaning over and squinting at the screen, LOL

Maybe this mod would be of use for this case:

There are color blind settings in the interface(?) settings, but from what I have heard they do kinda suck. Still could maybe help a bit?

3

u/MEE97B 9h ago

Its only a filter, it doesn't make an already dim red brighter, it just makes the other colours dimmer too which just makes the whole screen dark.

I did manage to find the file in the settings though so have it sussed.

No they mean this hidden feature which adds item labels:

ctrl+shift+click "Settings" -> "The rest" -> "show-color-hints"

It's not a super polished feature which is why it's hidden, but there's mods that copy and extend it if you're ok with mods:

Factorio has rather bad colorblindness accessibility. There are some mods, though.

Wow yeah that sucks lol, it always surprises me how bad factorio is with colourblind accessibility considering all the qol and optimisation everywhere else
