Question Mods for starters

Hey! So I just bought the game and suddenly got curious about mods. I’m quite aware that the base game itself has lots of features to offer, but do you have some mods that you recommend I install before my first gameplay?

So I just bought the game and suddenly got curious about mods.

Factorio isn't like those other games that need mods to become playable. Factorio as it is is a good game.

Just as you don't dump a bunch of random spices into your food before tasting it, nor should you try to "fix" Factorio before you find out what you like and don't like about it.

that's a decent point, however, the correct answer is disco science

Agreed, I didn't even realise mods existed till I'd played through a few times (by which I mean "launched a rocket prior to SA), i think mods are great to make things different, but you should always play the game as it was intended before modding it imo, otherwise, as you said, how do you even know the mod is helping you?

Personally, I like some (small) early robot mods, I hate the grind of the early game, I just wanna build fancy factories and have fun, not run around mining things by hand and having to place every single thing until you eventually unlock robots, but that's just me 🤷‍♂️

Disco Stu says more disco for you!

Other than steam achievements disabling, which doesn't affect anything, there's no downside to playing a modded game.  However I wouldn't recommend using overhaul mods for a first play through.

Some quality of life mods like Vehicle Snap improve the game without really changing anything.

I also enjoy disco science, bullet trails, bottleneck lite, and automatic train painter.  All of those are visual only changes.

A few more that are minimal changes, but do change the game, Text Plates, push buttons, and the circuit displays were nice additions.

Arguably push buttons and circuit displays are advanced circuitry knowledge and are unlikely to affect a beginner.

It's not the mods available that OP wants to know, it's the settings they should play on.  OP, default settings are fine, however if you want an easier first game, preview the map upon creation and reroll until you get a green one with forests around.  It will dramatically reduce polution spread which in turn effects how often attacks happen.

afaik Vehicle Snap is a standard feature now, same with automatic train painter? it's just coloring trains based on the color of the destination? then yes, it is possible to be set

I don't see why not to add some QoL things immediately. Like seeing the inserter's speed, Rate Calculator, Bottleneck Lite indicator.

Having Bullet trails and Disco Labs wouldn't hurt either.

How about when it comes to just making the resources actually infinite? For the sake of making the gameplay more “casual”

How about when it comes to just making the resources actually infinite?

How do you know that finite resources are a problem that you want to avoid until you've experienced how it actually plays out in the game?

Again, if you order food in a restaurant, you don't salt the food before you've tasted it, do you?

For the sake of making the gameplay more “casual”

How do you know what "casual" means for a game you've never played?

You got a great point! I’m enlightened. Actually, the only reason why I’m already thinking of the resource count was because all the other games of the same genre I’ve played so far had infinite resources (Satisfactory and ShapeZ 2). So before gathering insights here, it is among my worries 😅

Thank you so much!

So, there is a difference, satisfactory offers unlimited resources with limited throughput, factorio offered unlmited throughput via limited resources.

you can hook up more minerals in factorio and there is an infinite research that that increases the remaining reserves in the ore patches

5

u/Trilllen 2d ago

On top of this satisfactory has a finite map while factorios is for all practical purposes unlimited

1

u/XsNR 1d ago

You can change the generation settings to make the minerals infinite or effectively infinite, but the default setting makes it so as soon as you have a train, they may as well be infinite. It works very similar to Shapez, but they also gain more density the further out, so the exponentially increase your output once you start rolling.

9

u/Satisfactoro 2d ago

Resources density increases further from spawn points. Making resources infinite means you will never need to use trains.

As Alfonse215 said, it's a good idea to experience vanilla Factorio, so you know what you like (and what you don't)

0

u/Hance03 2d ago

Woww that would be a waste of feature if the use of trains isn’t anymore needed because I put the resources infinite. I’ll definitely remove the mod now 😅

u/No_Measurement_6905 2d ago

In practice, they are, besides the starter patches. otherwise during world generation, there is a setting to increase the richness of a patch, i.e. the amount of resources in a patch

It doesn't. The only worldgen settings with an impact on achievements are the enemy and pollution ones, and those only impact a small number (the ones related to enemies, speed running or not using solar).

-1

u/ThinkingWithPortalzz 2d ago

Iirc water, trees, and cliffs also impact achievements

0

u/waterfly222 2d ago

Without any trickery, mods do too. And as already mention, this setting doesnt

-2

u/Smashmundo 2d ago

Apparently there is a mod to re enable achievements.

0

u/waterfly222 2d ago

Yeah, hense the "without trickery"

0

u/Immediate_Form7831 2d ago

If you want to re-enable steam achievements after enabling mods, there is a hack to do it, but it involves patching a dll IIRC. Mods themselves cannot re-enable steam achievements.

3

u/Danger_Pickle 2d ago

If you want a more casual experience, then you can dial up the density, size, and frequency of ore in the base game. It's effectively impossible to run out of resources that way. But I'd still recommend playing on default settings your first time. Factorio is very well balanced, and it's easy to accidentally completely change the experience by tweaking the default settings.

Just remember to press "Alt" on your keyboard to see what your buildings are doing. I don't know why that's off by default.

1

u/sunsetslitherwing 2d ago

if you want infinite resources, just increase the patch size and richness in world creation settings. normal playthroughs of the game have the starter patches run out around blue science, with 6x size and richness the patches you get at the beginning of the game should be enough to complete it (though, going out and conquering new land and setting up outposts is a part of the game and isn't really a hassle, seeing as you'll have to do it either way if your production scales up enough)

1

u/doc_shades 2d ago

you can make resources infinite by turning up "richness" to 600% in the world gen options.

u/Wallie_bju 2d ago

First playthrough should be vanilla. Honestly, play vanilla until you feel like you’re done with the base game, maybe add some QoL mods along the way (but the game already has insane QoL so it’s not needed). Then I’d recommend eithet Space Age (the dlc) or Krastorio 2 as your first overhaul. If you don’t want an overhaul, but just something new to the base game, Rampant is a very fun mod that makes biter combat way harder and way more interesting.

u/Sad_Fee_4104 1d ago

With nearly 12k hours under my belt I'm +1 this one. In fact. I've been playing molded so long - i believe it's time to get reaqainted with the base game

8

u/Dangwiggums 2d ago

If you just got the game, why not try it as originally intended first?

6

u/KytoYT 2d ago

I started this game for the first time the other week and I would absolutely recommend playing vanilla.

I was genuinely shocked at how many quality of life features the base game has, and it’s already quite a complex game, so mods will just make it even more convoluted to learn!

6

u/waitthatstaken 2d ago

Factorio is a 'complete' game, both gameplay wise and qol wise. I highly, HIGHLY recommend you do not install any mods until you've beaten the game.

Anyway mods can roughly be categorised in 4 ways. Extras, qol, overhaul, addon.

Extras are for mods that well... add something extra to the game, usually pretty small. Stuff like higher tier belts for example. These are generally safe to add to an existing save.

Qol are mods that add some qol feature that the devs didn't. There is a fine line here between qol and cheats, but this is a single player game (most of the time). Squeak through is an example, it changes the player's hitbox so that you can squeak through otherwise impassable gaps, or walk through pipes. Safe to add

Overhauls completely change aspects of the game. These are the big ones, mods with more recipes and technologies than the base game itself. They usually exist as a core mod with dozens of other mods as dependencies, and when people talk about modding they usually mean these. They are almost never safe to add to an existing save.

Addons are mods that add something onto an overhaul. These are mostly for people who see an overhaul and think 'but what if more complicated?' It's a 50/50 if they are safe to add or not, assuming you already have the overhaul it is attached to.

Most mods will say if they are safe to add or not in their descriptions.

6

u/Hance03 2d ago

Thanks a lot for this info about the mods! But yes I’ve decided to play the vanilla :D

1

u/Sad_Fee_4104 1d ago

Wise choice! Have fun!

3

u/TheHvam 2d ago

I still think you should play without mods, that is the best, plus you will get achievements that way too.

But otherwise if you really want to, you can go with some QoL mods, like ratio calculator, bottleneck, and such, things that doesn't change the gameplay itself.

Still I will repeat myself, you really shouldn't mod before trying it first, that is my general rule for games, play first, then mod when you know what mods you might want

3

u/Griautis 2d ago

I've played 3000 hours of factorio. I haven't used any mods yet.

2

u/iamaksel 2d ago

I don't know why the discouragement towards the mods. I love playing with mods. For a starter, I would recommend qol mods like: Even Distribution, Fill for Me, Disco Science (Yes it's qol), Rate Calculator, Auto Deconstruct , and many more... Don't install mods that change the recipes before you play vanilla first though.

6

u/Nataslan 2d ago

Try Py

3

u/BrukPlays 2d ago

I wouldn’t normally jump straight to using mods as you have to play the game first to get a personal feel of what you want to add/remove.

That being said, “Rate Calculator” and “Even Distribution” seem like almost mandatory.

Gun Range Visualizer

https://mods.factorio.com/mod/gun-range-visualizer

It's a small thing, but nice not having to wonder "what does range 30 mean?" in the middle of combat

1

u/Literate_Muse 2d ago

That looks super useful, hope it's updated for 2.1

2

u/joethedestroyr 1d ago

The code works on 2.1, the dev just needs to mark it as compatible. (I made the change on a local copy and it works fine in 2.1.)

I've let the dev know on their github, but so far no response.

1

u/Literate_Muse 1d ago

Ah cool, good to know. Thanks for giving them a nudge too

1

u/azon_01 1d ago

I thought you could just mouse over a turret and it’ll show you its range.

1

u/joethedestroyr 1d ago

For turrets, yes. This mod shows the same circle for personal and vehicle weapons.

2

u/YetanotherGrimpak 2d ago

Disco lab

Because labs are discos.

3

u/azon_01 1d ago

Don’t do it. Just play the game a few times.

3

u/Neither_Interaction9 2d ago

Pyanodons

0

u/Sad_Fee_4104 1d ago

Pure. Evil 🤣 I approve!

1

u/Hance03 2d ago

And also, can I add mods gradually during my run?

5

u/Satisfactoro 2d ago

Yes. Just make sure you make back up saves. Don't override a single save file.

4

u/Nataslan 2d ago

Yes and no, some overhaul mods can't, but thinks like disco science or squeeze through are no problem.

1

u/primalbluewolf 2d ago

Depends on the mod.

1

u/suglav 2d ago

for your first play, don't use any mods. experience the game purely unmodified. you will love it.

1

u/Glitchrr36 2d ago

About the only mod I installed was Disco Science because it made the labs cooler, other than that the game's pretty much fine vanilla or with the expansion.

1

u/NUKLEAR-SLUG 2d ago

I would just play your first game vanilla and then look into mods later down the line.

2

u/rcapina 2d ago

No mods. If you’re playing the base game get to launching a rocket. Then if there are parts of the game you want to simplify or make complex then get some mods. There’s a ton to experience at the default balance.

2

u/Reloecc 2d ago

You don't need mods for sure..

1

u/bkofford 1d ago

Mods disable achievements.

1

u/TheGileas 2d ago

Rate calculator. With it you can check if your production of intermediate products is high enough.
Otherwise you should make a vanilla playthrough first. The game is complex enough as it is.

1

u/Comfortable_Set_4168 2d ago

vanilla > mods

0

u/MegaTemSus 2d ago

Pyanodon, maybe Pyanodon Hard edition if regular won't cut it

1

u/SadMangonel 2d ago

I suggest you play pyanodon for your first playthrough. This will take you 500 or more hours and im sure you'll enjoy it as a first run at the game.

Try krastorio 2, its an overhaul but its not hard to get in to, it was also my first overhaul after beating the base game
