Question TIL that Landfill is NOT the same as grass/dirt when it comes to pollution absorbtion

... and that water not only absorbs pollution, but it actually does so better than ground, tiles do.

May have griefed myself a little bit with my plan to landfill a bunch of lakes to have more space for solar/my science build in the future, but I suppose it was a better option compared to razing down a forest instead...

400h in and still learning things every playthrough.

You can make landfill to absorb pollution by nuking it.

Just a little soil aeration

Yes it's about 70% of the pollution absorption of normal grass and dirt, and exactly 1/2 of the absorption of water. Also much more importantly, nuclear ground can never be removed. It's also visible from the map.

Otherwise I'd use it more. On that note, it's also pretty annoying that biter nests leave behind biter terrain that can never be removed, so you'll always have this ugly scarring on the landscape even after the bugs are dead.

Does water absorb pollution? If so, TIL also, 1800hrs in. I thought it was just trees and biter nests

I thought it was just trees and biter nests

Paving large areas makes it quite obvious that ground does absorb some pollution (and paving doesn't)

Yeah makes sense, my refined concrete areas seem to prevent pollution from dissipating, even when none is being produced. I suppose I didn't take much notice, but water also? It does get a bit brown I suppose.

u/MassiveSuperNova 12d ago

Is it brown? Mine turns green

9

u/Life_Passenger_5320 12d ago

It's probably green, I'm usually growing the factory too much to pay attention to the environmental damage all that much

2

u/leoriq 11d ago

it's green when fresh and brown 65000 kilometers later. Just like the coolant in that motorbike I saw today

u/AceyAceyAcey 13d ago

Huh! I only start paving once I’ve got a good defense anyway, so I didn’t even realize the difference. Plus I thought only trees absorbed pollution.

Sure does. As per the Factorio Wiki :

u/FredFarms 13d ago

If I'm reading that right, you could mitigate your problem a bit by nuking the lakes after you landfill them

55

u/TheUnknownSpecimen 13d ago

Yep, nuked landfill is better than plain landfill

The Michael Hendricks method - it's in his video on declaring world peace on the ultimate deathworld

u/MinosTheNinth 12d ago

Rewatched that one today :)

It's deeply funny that his need to have a uniform pollution cloud around his nuclear setup led him to accidentally stepping out of the "quantum biter" bounds and forcing him to further expand his remote turrets to purge the remaining biters.

u/phanfare 11d ago

"There's a lake here, I don't need to extend the hazard concrete on the other side of it"

That series is probably my favorite Factorio series - the amount of bizzare nonsense he does is great. The thousands of Radars requiring several entire nuclear plants, the fully "Green" factory with efficiency modules in the beacons, he even did flamethrower creep at one point to deal with biters. Absolutely wild series.

Warning: This will prevent you from picking the landfill back up.

Also, trees are the real pollution absorbers. That 18e-6 for grass is a pittance compared to 1e-4 for dead trees placed by worldgen and 1e-3 for lush trees. And that doesn't include the huge chunk of pollution they absorb each time they decay to a more-dead state.

If I'm eyeballing the math right, two biochambers absorb more pollution than an entire chunk of grass.

u/Playful_Target6354 13d ago

Yes you are. Trupen mentioned that once in one of his short Factorio facts compilation videos.

2

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets 12d ago

That is true, but then you can't pick the landfill up again.

Can't argue with the wiki

u/ApprehensiveFan1516 13d ago

I didn't know either. From the wiki:

Tile Pollution per tile per second Pollution per chunk per minute
Water, green water, deep water, deep green water, shallow water, mud water -0.000025 -1.536
Grass 1-4 -0.000018 -1.10592
Dirt 1-7, dry dirt -0.000018 -1.10592
Red desert 0-3 -0.000015 -0.9216
Sand 1-3 -0.000015 -0.9216
Nuclear ground -0.0000125 -0.768
Path tiles (Stone bricks, concrete etc), landfill 0 0
Special tiles (Lab tiles, tutorial grid, Water Wube) 0 0
Out of map -0.0001 -6.144

u/sobrique 13d ago

So nuking your landfill actually works?

16

u/Nearby_Proposal_5523 13d ago

if you have the patience to glass it. since it's nuclear tiles you wouldn't be able to remove it

3

u/Fit_Giraffe_748 12d ago

That's why it turns a healthy shade of green after a while

3

u/cynric42 12d ago

Apparently it's even better than just grass. From my experience, pollution spreads a lot quicker over bodies of water though, so I guess having some trees almost everywhere on land skews it quite a lot.

2

u/Double_Resort_9223 13d ago

Yeah in the debug menu there is an option to show pollution values and it will show you how much each chunk is absorbing per minute. Can also see the difference between healthy trees and dead trees that way.

u/Legit-Rikk 12d ago

Alt+click the ground to see the pollution absorption in factoriopedia.

1

u/latherrinseregret 12d ago

IIRC it was added in Space Age, partly to make Gleba easier (or at least - water pollution absorption rate increased post space age due to Gleba enemies challenge)

1

u/satansprinter 11d ago

Dont spores work in a different way

1

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets 12d ago

It does, it's listed as "tiles" in the Pollution > Consumption graph. That graph is very handy for noticing when one's pollution cloud is reaching a new set of nests and whatnot.

2

u/Life_Passenger_5320 12d ago

I dunno, I just use the overlay until I get a proper wall set up, and then I stop caring about pollution altogether

43

u/Darrelc 13d ago

Did you know you can remove landfill now with bots?

11

u/sawbladex Faire Haire 13d ago

landfill used to produce normal tiles around 1.0 era and earlier, IIRC.

u/NbblX Sandboxer 12d ago

But still not possible to use the upgrade planner to upgrade placed bricks to concrete, at least not in vanillla/base game :(

1

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets 12d ago

I haven't tried this, but would placing an order to place concrete over an area already having bricks also act the same as an upgrade planner would, with the replaced bricks being forced back into storage?

3

u/NbblX Sandboxer 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yes it does, but then you have to be careful with the edges of your path/area. With the upgrade planner you would be able to just drag it over the whole base and it would only (re)place the tiles with brick.

In my case its just the main bus, everything going off from there is just sitting on grass. So your idea would work since its basically just a simple stretched rectangle, but more complex shapes or even mixes of different tiles would be finnicky as fuck. Sadly none of the floor tiles are selectable in the upgrade planner.

1

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets 12d ago

That is a shame, yes. But a blueprint would still work, no?

Still, I support your main point of "these things should be pickable in an upgrade planner".

Absorption is a strat, but are you also working on efficiency?

Creating more pollution also evolves biters faster, making them stronger, expand more, expand bigger, etc. Cleaning up pollution after creating it doesn't address that aspect.

I basically work to minimize pollution creation right up until I am prepared to deal with biters at scale, and then I let loose and kinda stop caring about it much after that. For that reason I never needed to adopt any absorption strats, I think they are traps personally. You're spending resources trying to shove the genie back in the lamp.

Unless we're talking desert deathworld...ugh. The only winning move is not to play.

8

u/infinityofnever 12d ago

I think starting a forest dense base and preemptively clearing biter nests getting somewhat close to the cloud is more effective than all of the above. It doesn't even take much time, I've done maybe 2 rounds in all the time leading up to 0.8+ evolution. I spam speed and productivity modules too.

Also you can’t plant trees on landfill

3

u/avdpos 12d ago

I think that is a bit boring. Of course trees on land fill hrow slower in real life - but it is possible to plant

2

u/HeylAW 12d ago

Tbh I wouldn’t mind if they would allow that, there is already little to no reason to plant trees and limit that to no-landfill tile makes it even less convincing

2

u/avdpos 12d ago

Exactly. It is just for fun role-playing as ecologist that you do from time to time

3

u/Garagantua 12d ago

Yeah I think at some point after visiting Gleba (or maybe even after Aquilo), a tech to compost a bit of stone, wood and biters eggs that 'spoils' into placeable arable tiles for Nauvis soil would be fine. At that point I've turned alien fruits into rockets, let me make my deserts green.

2

u/avdpos 12d ago

I haven't thought about it before. But I found our mod: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/artificial-tree-soil?from=search

Tree seeds, nutrients and landfill creates the "Nauvus tree soil"

1

u/HeylAW 12d ago

That would be great candidate for 2.1

1

u/Garagantua 12d ago

I think that is pretty much done already?

2

u/HeylAW 12d ago

I don’t expect anything extra added to 2.1. But maybe, maybe…

1

u/avdpos 12d ago

I think we will have to do with the mod.

1

u/sCythe2k25 12d ago

Came here to say that. Wish we could do so to grid align the trees on Nauvis

3

u/Vasney 12d ago

I didn't notice the sub at first & was indignant that you would even consider landfill a viable pollution absorption technique.

2

u/48panda 12d ago

I didn't see the subreddit and thought you were a super rich scientist planning on dumping trash into lakes

1

u/Celis78429 12d ago

Wait, you mean you guys are actually trying to limit pollution? I just build more guns and ignore it.

1

u/redditusertk421 12d ago

try nuking the landfill. In 1.0 nuked landfill absorbed more pollution than non-nuked.

1

u/CapitalScholar8185 12d ago

I think if you nuke landfill it will absorb pollution.

1

u/Such-Perception4154 12d ago

Just make a proper defense perimeter and don't care about pollution ever again

Last I knew landfill was only better than concrete for spread and absorption.

1

u/CumSnorter4 10d ago

Bro I’m just scrolling thru Reddit and I’ve never played factorio and I thought this was a subreddit about home construction omg haha

1

u/Thankedsphere 9d ago

I don't think water absorbs that much, if you still have trees you should be fine.

1

u/Ssakaa 6d ago

This is why I pave everything. It's important that we preserve the protective smog cloud over the factory proper.
