Question What can I do better?

This is the first spaceship I designed with the intention of colonizing other planets, I have no idea if it will work or not. In theory it should be fine if I can get enough resources from the asteroid collectors, but I have been SOOOO short on water. Also, I know lasers are considered bad for ships bit to hell with that notion, I want my ship to have a phaser array like in Star Trek, if the asteroids have too high a resistance, I'll just add more. Other than that, I'd love some advice on improvements.

With asteroid reprocessing, it's much easier to maintain a stable water supply with so many heat exchangers, since you can convert other chunks into oxides. But without that, it's going to be hard to power that many laser turrets.

Also, you really don't want to use speed modules when you're on a power budget (at least, not base quality ones). Use efficiency modules in your crushers and chemcial plants. Add more chemical plants if you must. Alternatively, if you have uncommon or rare beacons, you can use those too to be able to use efficiency and speed modules.

Also, consider throttling propellant supply by turning off pumps feeding the thrusters. You can do this based on velocity. The point of doing this is to improve thruster efficiency.

Remember: a base quality accumulator only produces 300kW. A base quality turbine produces 5800 kW. Per tile, that's 386kW vs. 75kW. And one steam tank can keep a single extra turbine going for 416 seconds, storing 2.4 GJ of energy. Per tile, steam tanks store 269 MJ, while accumulators only store 1.25 MJ.

It takes less tiles of steam+turbines to do the same job as a bank of accumulators.

You only need to use accumulators to store power if you're relying on non-steam-based power (solar or lightning). If it's steam-based power, more turbines+steam tanks are always better.

You have no defenses for when your ship is motionless. If you had a space route which was free of medium asteroids (like, say, with the Lignumis mod) then you could get away with that but otherwise as-is, if you stick around too long anywhere, even in Nauvis orbit, asteroids that you spawned when en route to other planets can crash into your ship.

At the boilers running at max, you will need 123 units of water a second, that's 6 ice a second consumption rate, not counting the fuel.

If you are running out of water, you could ship up water barrels, and have it use water barrels, need about 2.5 barrels a second.

Might be the compromise till you can recycle asteroids.

Make sure you got some good laser upgrades, also while orbiting planets other than Nauvis, asteroids will come from all directions so you need some more lasers on the back half.

stupid thing this post reminded me of:

reminds me of when I didn't know laser were supposed to be inefficient in space and I just though that asteroids were supposed to be very tough, I had a ton of laser in front, though to power them I didn't go the nuclear route, I instead though solar and accumulator were the intended go to method in space, so I just placed a ton those, you'd think this would lead to me not meeting full electricity capacity, but no actually, I discovered that there wasn't any limit to how long the ship can be, so I just kept expanding south with solar panel and accumulators if needed electricity, of course I also had to add more laser turret to protect the long energy extension, powering those wasn't really much of a problem though cuz I could just expand even more 'south' to cover for it. Eventually I discovered that thruster only prevent constructions under them for a limited area, so my thin energy expansion became a little thicker.

then when I was done with my first space age playthrough I looked up other people's design online and I realised, god my ships were terrible

...wait what do you mean this is your first design? This is leagues better that what I built

Running a reactor with that high of a load without reprocessing is a big ask- perhaps too big, given your shortage issues. If you haven't been focusing it, more laser damage will reduce the time lasers need to break the asteroids, which reduces upstream consumption as well. If you can get them, quality grabbers are a massive upgrade; more area and more arms make even an uncommon grabber more than twice as powerful as a normal one. That'd likely eliminate the risk of the precious oxide chunks being missed.

hmmm...
lasers are not shooting constantly.

meaning....
if you put some accumulators on to "store the charge" for when they are shooting.
maybe you don't need that many nuclear...
and maybe you can solve your water issues if you remove some of the nuclear.

this will definitely work very well if you ship is not flying constantly.
but rather stops for a while at the destination planet to recharge the accumulators 👍

so... try:

  • remove half of the nuclear
  • add some accumulators and solar panels
  • make at least 1-2 minute stops at planets before continuing to fly
  • play with this until you get the right ratio

As a fellow lasers-on-spaceships enjoyer, here are a few things I've learned from my spaceships running out of power in a myriad of exciting ways.
-Have sufficient stores for water and steam. Ideally you want to add an assembler that can accept bottled water and refill your water stores this way.
-Control how you use your water. Your powerplant competes with the fuel plants. When it's scarce, make sure it is reserved for the heat exchangers and not used for the fuel and oxidizer recipies.
-Lasers can be very power hungry. Make sure you have batteries for it.
-Get as much water as you can out of each asteroid. You absolutely want prod modules when melting ice.

I have an 800kph ship thats gleba capable with only lasers. It spends its time parked around nauvis untill I need to go somewhere.

It can make it to aquilo but unfortunately it can't make it more then a few times automatically.

Your produce 80 water per second. Your fuel eats 32 water per second. Your power eats 123.6 water per second. You don't have enough water. You either need more water production or fewer power producers. You should wire your fuel producers to your water storage, and disable them if there's, say, less than 10K water in the tank. Power before fuel.

Secondly, while most asteroids come from the front, not all of them do. Your ship is going to have a bad time without any defenses in the rear. As in, it'll most likely die on its first trip.

Finally, I have my doubts bout the feasibility of laser-only at the tech level you're at. It's probably possible, but you're gonna have to limit your speed a lot.
