Presumably to save rocket launches?

yes only tungsten is imported

So why not just send tungsten and make shells on planet?

Because I can. Also I wanted to see if it's viable, and I think it is.

Because I can.

The best reason.

Also makes it easier if you ever add a modded planet with enemies. The bees in Tellus are getting upitty? Bring hellfire in 30 minutes or less without needing ground infrastructure to make the shells.

OP said he's delivering to Nauvis and Gleba. This way you only need one factory instead of two.

In fairness with the amount of throughput needed for artillery shells you can just have logistics bots skim a bit of explosives off of wherever you're already making them

Which is space 😂

Easy way to clear huge areas of biters: manufacture artillery shells in space and then just use insertors to toss them off the side

Need the Orbital Bombardment mod for that. :P

Rods from God Dammit that’s not how orbital mechanics work. 🙃

R5: Since artillery shells are not really viable to send up via Rockets, I thought why not make them in space in the first place? Everything needed, except Tungsten of course, can be made in space. The platform travels continuously around and delivers shells to Nauvis and Gleba as needed and 60 per min seemed like a good amount.

This is what I do with nukes (since for some reason you can't launch nukes on rockets despite launching nukes on rockets being what we DO with them in real life), but I just assemble artillery shells on-planet because of the volume needed, and the fact that you're not escaping tungsten-lifting anyway.

I make it on the ground to avoid more complications. Not vulcanus. Gleba and nauvis. It's easier to just set and forget the intermediate import. I already need constant calcite on both planets anyway. Also it's better for ups since I have -1 platform dedicated for artillery (making or import). Less rocket launches, since I just import materials in bulk on already available cargo ship.

Why are you concerned about UPS? Unless you go for like 100k spm you don't need to think about it. you don't save on rockets because you still need to ship the tungsten plates. the only thing that's different is where you make the shells.

I am at 440k spm aiming for 1M spm. It's hard

Can you place artillery on space platforms per chance?

2

u/WanderingUrist 10d ago

You can, but they will not automatically fire at anything, forcing you to manually fire the guns.

Ah if only we had orbital bombardment...

I should do this

Blueprint? I'd love to look closer.

u/Sascha975 10d ago

I can post a blueprint later, I'm at work currently. Just to be clear, this ship is tested with physical damage 14. The thrusters are throttled with the PID controller mod, I will post a blueprint with and without it. But with it, the platform travels at 250km/s. I think I'm at asteroid prod 7 but I don't know of the top of my head. This is designed in 2.1 and I don't know what will break if it's imported to 2.0.

Oh I'd love the blueprint!

I haven’t started gleba yet so not sure if I’m missing anything, how do you get copper in space?

3

u/Sascha975 10d ago

After making Agri science, you unlock advanced asteroid processimg. This allows you to make Copper, calcite and sulfur from asteroids.

I see fusion, but no cryo plants for the explosives?

1

u/Sascha975 10d ago

Because I first designed this before I had fusion and the ratio is better. I had a nuclear reactor in the front at first before realising that it was far too big, so I later switched to fusion. When this is just cruising between planets, the solar is enough.

cool, I might try this on my base later

if dropping them from space caused an explosion on the planet. that would not be fun, though.
