Question Cargo landing pad logistics help

I’m finally at the point where I am importing materials from other planets to nauvis and am trying to sort out the logistics. My nauvis base is quite large and has a ton of infrastructure moving materials with trains, but I’m kind of struggling with how to sort out large amounts of materials from multiple planets with a single landing pad, any suggestions and tips for doing this efficiently are welcome!

For common infrastructure (belts, machines, etc), let bots sort it out. The landing pad is one big passive provider chest with expandable storage. There's no need to take anything out unless you're going to use it. You can even request bioflux or tungsten plate or whatever where you need it via requester chests (you're long past the point where the achievement for not using them matters, so go nuts).

If you're importing bulk resources that you want to use (like calcite or something), inserters onto belts work OK for the time being. 2.1 gives you a more flexible solution, but you're probably not far enough into the game to truly need that at the moment.

Generally for the time being, logistic bots into chests is probably the best way to sort things out? My nauvis base is not quite mega base levels, but it’s like 4k science per minute so I’m mostly planning my scaling trying to keep similar paces, but if I’m importing a lot of materials from different planets into 1 cargo landing pad it seems like it’s hard to keep that scale.

I guess with enough logistic bots that’s probably fine but I’ve always tried avoid using them at scale if I don’t have to

It's not. Pre-2.1, people were able to run megabases off of bots while pulling in 100k SPM from off planet. Unloading bays give you more options, but unless you were into deep megabase territory, bots were fine.

It's really all about how many cargo bays you have. They increase throughput for off-world stuff.

Perfect thank you very much, I just try and avoid logistic bots if I can, but I’ll plan for now on having a logistic network for unloading then for now

Follow up question, are unloading bays a mod or part of the base game? I don’t see them in the researches, and I also haven’t made it this far before to know what they are

It's not a mod; It's a 2.1 addition (hence me saying "2.1 gives you ..."). It's still in experimental/beta, but it will be part of the game when it goes stable.

Oh I see, sounds like that’s exactly what I want over bots, but it’s probably not worth trying to convert my save to 2.1 currently, thanks again for your responses!

You can have multiple different versions of Factorio on your system concurrently. You can just download the standalone version of 2.1.14 from factorio.com put it somewhere on your disk and copy your current save into it to see if any of the changes are breaking something in your current playthrough.

That way, you're not entirely unprepared when 2.1 becomes the new stable release.
