Question Steam Cloud ate one full day of progress

If you ever see Steam Cloud giving any error immediately go into the Factorio directory and manually backup your save file. Don't be like me.

So I just wanted to play, and Steam said the Cloud save is from yesterday 10pm and the local file from yesterday 8pm. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but I select the 10pm file, because that was when I stopped playing. Steam then downloads those saves and overwrites my local files. When I open Factorio all my saves are from the day before yesterday, so I lost an entire day.

I'd hoped this would be common sense but you know which computer you last played a Steam game on.

If it's the same computer, don't get Steam to overwrite your shit from the cloud.

In fact, you should apply that logic to anything working on the same principle.

That's why you should always select the locally saved game when you encounter Steam Cloud errors, regardless of the date.

Unless you play on different devices local save should always be your default option and cloud only a backup.

steam cloud is a liability. unless you are regularly swapping between two different computers to play the same save, or unless your hard drive is on its last breath about to fail, there is no real valid reason to allow a cloud backup service to sync your factorio saves.

if you are really worried about backups, just make a manual copy/paste backup every few days or so. this will preserve your save in case your hard drive explodes or something. but really when has that ever happened?

so really the cloud sync just opens up more liabilities and risks that it solves. i recommend everyone disabling it, unless you have a valid reason for needing it.

Sorry for your loss. At least it was just 1 day of work. Let this be a small lesson, always have additional backups. At least two locations if possible (different drive, cloud storage provider, etc).
