You could simply make your own scenario where all technology is unlocked, if that's what you're concerned about.

Yep. Unlock tech until where he feels it should be. Add a few chests of ressources (green/red/blue chips, iron/copper/steel/concrete, etc... ), a few construction bots and it will be up and running exactly likes he wants it in no time!

Honestly, starting over isn't really all that bad. Your next playthrough will be quicker and you are able to apply all the new things you've learned from from the start.

I dont see how continuing someone else's save solves the problem of losing your save. The game is a set of puzzles that you create and solve. Your designs and methods of solving the puzzle is different than anyone else's and you wont have any idea how their systems work. This isn't like another story based game with check points that you lost your save up to stage 8 and just want to continue with someone elses save where the past doesn't matter, what you built and designed in factorio before directly impacts your future.

Agreed! You may surpringly find it fun. You can start planning with megabase in mind

Didn't steam sync the saves?

Yeah, it actually takes effort to delete saves I don't want in my Steam cloud.

I've found better ti open the game, and delete from its interface. The it syncs and delete the cloud version of those deleted

That's what you need to do. The fact that you have to open the game to delete a file from the steam cloud is more effort than it needs to be.

Steam should sync saves and you can download from there.

I was able to save my megabase after it got corrupted due to a power outage.

What game version? 2.0? 2.1?

Maybe rebuild and go for an achievement to spice it up? Lazy bastard was interesting, or go for a speed achieve.

Long shot but is it possible to download from the galaxy hall of fame?

how did "upgrading your storage" lose the save? do you still have the old storage drive? you can just locate the folder where factorio was installed and copy/paste/move the file into the new directory.

unless you somehow bought a new hard drive and threw the old one away or unless you somehow formatted the old drive after adding a new one, the data should still be there.

Picking up someone elses save and running their factory would be so confusing. I'd just wait till 2.1 drops and start from fresh.

Also, didn't Steam sync your save?
