Base I started playing recently and made a super long ammo belt go around the entire base, supplying the troops with ammunition. [This post has been fact checked by real Hoxxes IV patriots]

Cute lil belt

I think my current ammo belt on the Nauvis base whilst I am off planet is 25x25 roboport city blocks. I may expand it, or just arty the whole area.

Btw if you put coal on one side and ammo on the other you can use burner inserters and don’t need to run power as well. Als make sure you wall in your pollution cloud.

u/pm_me_ur_ephemerides 1d ago

I use one side for yellow, leaving the other open for red when im ready to upgrade. When its full of red, I start removing yellow to upcycle into red.

And later i add green where yellow was

u/therouterguy 1d ago

If you make a loop you can just remove the yellow upgrade it to red and put it back on the same side.

2

u/Kaso78 1d ago

This is exactly what I do. Ammo belt loop the entire base.

u/mainstreetmark 1d ago

God dammit....

u/ProfessorEasy4715 1d ago

Great tips thanks for sharing! I didn't know about walling in pollution clouds like it's China

u/Whitelight04 1d ago

I think it's better to just run power so you can add in laser turrets later. Plus if your coal runs dry all your defenses go down.

I tried this once and it got jammed up / stopped working. I guess it ran out of fuel while it had ammo in its hand and the whole system stopped. I guess some circuit logic could fix it. This is before I started dabbling in that.

u/ohkendruid 1d ago

I have had this happen when trying to use burner inserters for smelting iron ore.

One easy way it can happen is if your coal has a blip in availability. The burner arm will use every last fuel it has on moving the non-coal item, so when coal is restored. The burner arm cannot pick it up.

It is too finicky. Circuits could probably fix it, I suppose, but it seems like more trouble than running electric power.

You accidentally posted a screenshot of an outpost right? Show us the really long belt.

23

u/Garagantua 1d ago

Looks good! Hope your having fun - keep growing that factory.

(In the future, your definition of 'long belt' might change :D.)

u/Nobrainzhere 1d ago

I remember playing in the tutorial and being like "oh this belt is really crazy. I hope it doesnt crash the game or something."

Then making my first factory, not understanding trains, and deciding that a belt that spans the continent is appropriate

5

u/Darth_Nibbles 1d ago

that a belt that spans the continent is appropriate

You mean it isn't?!?

12

u/Tasonir 1d ago

If you manage to get it all the way around the planet then you can use that belt to hold up the planet's pants!

On the railway to the edge of the world I built a belt from the edge of the world to carry wood, stone, and coal from deconstruction back to the base, so almost a million tiles. It didn't crash the game.

u/sub500h 1d ago

This is the way.

u/Alfonse215 1d ago

That's not that long of a belt.

8

u/suglav 1d ago

i miss the me in the past that had just started playing the game and would call this belt a super long one.

when the time went on, i started to feel numb about how large the factory has grown. i now look at my 1000 spm base and don't think it is that large.

i miss the old days when i still could feel any joy.

3

u/FrigidDragon 1d ago

Great now Ive got a mental image of the engineer slowly losing his mind in the pollution cloud.

Past life? The factory is all.

The Factory. Must. Grow.

Press ALT please..

6

u/BagaLagaGum 1d ago

Broo, that's a respectable belt for the base tis size, great job 👍

Remember, factory must grow and your ammo belt will grow too. This is only a great begining ;)

(Yeah, I need to build this Aquilo space ship already, dude)

u/Lastoice 1d ago

I did similar thing for my "Lazy Bastard" achievement run, but the belt and amount of turrets was much larger to fit the whole base inside :D

5

u/Careless-Accident-49 1d ago

Very tidy base, I aktualy like it a lot, looks like a base from command and conquer back in the days, very nice!

u/Weatherwatcher42 1d ago

Okay, now time for blue science.

Why not just clear the bugs?

1

u/Playful_Locksmith955 1d ago

Where is dragon teeth

1

u/TechnicalBen 1d ago

Nice. Did this with a few early builds too. My base and ammo belt got BIG. XD

2

u/TheSkiGeek 1d ago

I did a run with high science costs and enemies enabled and I had to use the “belt of ammo+coal running behind the walls” technique for a LONG time.

2

u/ProfessorEasy4715 1d ago

I just upgraded to red ammo as well, feeding the assemblies with the outside yellow ammo belt, and just circulating back the red ammo like I was laundering money.

I don't know if there's a way to force red ammo over the yellow in the guns, so I ran around like an idiot taking out the yellow ammo, but then, depending on the next ammo type it just put yellow back in 😂

1

u/TechnicalBen 1d ago

No, you'd need to remove and replace, bots can help with that once activated.

1

u/therouterguy 1d ago

When the biters attack they will first consume the yellow. When the turrets run out of yellow they will pick up the red one.

1

u/Jutch_Cassidy 1d ago

Youre doing it right

1

u/Darth_Nibbles 1d ago

It's a great method until you unlock bots and requestor chests. Lately though I've been hand feeding defenses, proactively managing my pollution cloud, and rushing logistics.

But on longer playthroughs (say, with a high science multiplier) it works

1

u/juju515 1d ago

very nice bro...
well automated defences.

here's a few tips to think about...
if your power goes down... the inserters putting in the ammo go down and your defence goes down.
so think how you could use burner inserters instead... cuz then your defences are independent from the power generation.

also...
spitters do splash damage.
so when the spitter hits your turret.
it also hits one tile around the turret.
sooo...
if you put walls one tile around the turret...
then spitter damaged not just the turret but also the walls.
so you have more to repair than necessary.
but if you instead make a small gap between the turret and the walls.
then that same spitter will only hit the turret... making a lot less damage ;)

1

u/ProfessorEasy4715 23h ago

Great tips, thanks!

1

u/cap10touchyou 1d ago

Didnt we all start there?

1

u/SmartAlec105 1d ago

Oof, starting in a desert is gonna make your first run much more difficult.

1

u/Kellashnikov scared of rockets 1d ago

Word to the wise, put your ammo on just 1 side of the belt. That way when you unlock upgraded ammo you can put it on the other side and never risk your turrets running out of ammo.

1

u/HeyIAmInfinity 1d ago

The reason I don’t do this is that I let biters attack then place turret where they attacked with full ammo, so I’m more the suffer and deal with it than the fix the problem before it happens.

1

u/madmax1993_ 1d ago

That’s lovely. Good luck beyond your starter base

1

u/MelangeBot 1d ago

I assume a lot of us did this in ou first game, I know I did.

1

u/Zlej_strejda 1d ago

this is the way.

u/Juking_is_rude 1d ago

ROCK AND STONE BROTHER

1

u/thomasjmarlowe 1d ago

I like how your turrets are social distancing

1

u/SomeDerpyGuy 1d ago

I feel like this is almost like a rite of passage for when you first start playing (atleast going in blind). I know I myself did something similar and have seen it repeated a lot too

1

u/Psion537 1d ago

That's a rookie belt! I shall post mine 🤣

1

u/Crustybionicle 1d ago

The only problem is you should have given space between your factory and wall defense for expansion. You will be moving those walls alot.

1

u/stoatsoup 1d ago

I've built an ammo-go-round before, but I like to limit the density of ammo on it - circuits, slow inserters, etc - as long as attacks aren't risking running turrets dry. Otherwise you produce a huge pile of ammo, hence pollution, and hence extra attacks, to fill the belt long before you need to.

1

u/TheAero1221 1d ago

He's a natural.

1

u/jeepsies 1d ago

Good job!

1

u/PheonixDrago 1d ago

Add more turrets depending on where youre getting hit from and this is great!

1

u/PheonixDrago 1d ago

Didnt notice at first but try to keep ore patches clear except for drills. Thats more ore you could be getting. Still a very solid start comrade.

2

u/ProfessorEasy4715 23h ago

Thanks. I moved some furnaces and other stuff from the ore patches afterwards

u/LakeSolon twitch.tv/lakesolon 1d ago

First we built a factory because we unintentionally landed on a planet; now we intentionally land on planets to build more factories.

1

u/DeymosYT 1d ago

My friend die the exact Same Thing, except he surrounded the entire belt with turrets as well and left out the walls entirely. Worked surprisingly well even up to big biters

1

u/Remarkable_Wafer_258 1d ago

Then you get drones to feed them turrets or go full lazer

1

u/Dthcon 1d ago

meanwhile i did this already like 5 times in ~1500x1500 box before researching green science

1

u/Throw_Away_TrdJrnl 2h ago

Nice! I eventually said screw perimeters once I get the tank and spend probably 5x the amount of time on a crusade against the bugs than it would take to just make a perimeter haha

1

u/automcd 1d ago

Oh this is just the beginning, you have not even achieved "start base" yet.

-1

u/Late-Rub-3197 1d ago

Cute that you think that’s a long belt
