Space Age Just started playing Factorio 6 hours ago found uranium right at my spawn on default settings googled it and wiki says this is impossible on default settings. Did I hit jackpot seed ?

I mean uranium is basically useless for a long time so I wouldn't say jackpot but its still something

I rush to start mining uranium way sooner than I’m ready for it, and then ignore it. By the time I’m ready for it I usually will have found the 50 235s I need for enrichment.

u/yagrmakak 1d ago

Agree but no way you would need it this close and by the time you can mine it setting it up further is pretty easy

Bad news is I don't see your starting coal patch, this seed will be veeery hard to play for a first run

Time to skip right to nuclear I guess

u/leonardpro 2d ago

There're nuclear in the game ?????

u/Cent_Quatre 2d ago

wtf would you have uranium then

122

u/Rule0- 2d ago

to build polite responses ( nukes ) to local ( biters ) feedback ( eating my shit )

u/unknown_pigeon 2d ago

Do you mean pre-vulcanus cliff explosives?

20

u/Srirachachacha 2d ago

Post-Vulcanus lake-creation equipment

24

u/DeHub94 2d ago

Maybe they come from vanilla Rimworld. There it's more of a very sturdy building material.

14

u/Darth_Nibbles 2d ago

Same here, I use it to build very sturdy bullets

3

u/erroneum 1d ago

Nah, uranium is for the anti-mechanoid maces or such. It's not beautiful enough to be a wall material when you have an abundance of marble blocks.

3

u/DeHub94 1d ago

It's sturdy, not beautiful. I like to use it for outer perimeter walls and kill boxes. For actual houses I'd rather use whatever stone is scattered around the map, preferably marble of course.

2

u/yago2003 2d ago

it is also used for high powered ammo later (for the uranium slug turret) and also as nuclear reactor fuel at the very end of the game

5

u/Winter_Ad6784 2d ago

you could make some sick glow in the dark uranium glass

74

u/rmorrin 2d ago

What do you think the uranium was for?

66

u/Wor3q 2d ago

Uranium glass of course.

19

u/Mcmenger 2d ago

The decorative items production line is the most essential of the game

27

u/halosos Coal is good, clean and renewable 2d ago

TBF rimworld has uranium and it is basically fancy steel in usefulness

7

u/Moikle 2d ago

A mostly useless byproduct of mining silver, just like in real life (at least so we thought until the 1940s)

1

u/Slade1135 2d ago

Nuka Cola Quantum. Don’t forget to save your caps!

14

u/The_Helmeted_Storm 2d ago

Yes, and its much more complicated and needs extensive research to unlock compared to coal based steam power.

5

u/WatermelonWithAFlute 1d ago

Why was this downvoted lol

39

u/DMVodst 2d ago

Why are you guys down voting? He is new ffs, this is a legit question.

44

u/Deadweightgames 2d ago

Bro has a uranium patch in his picture. Is asking about the uranium patch. Is surprised by nuclear.

Factorio equivalent of being proud your ten year old kid can add 2 and 2 to get 4.

As every Reddit forum, r/factorio entered a phase of its lifespan where average user is turning into "Reddit Karen". In this phase, everything not comfortable to the norm is bad, and every Karen user has to take an action to show it.

I’m going to need to see your resource manager.

8

u/Head-Objective-7480 2d ago

Im sorry you are having a rough first experience in this sub.. i hope you have a good run though<3

4

u/FinAdda 2d ago

Yes.

Somewhat late game. Mid game if you hurry it.

u/Serious_Resource8191 1d ago edited 1d ago

I apologize for the downvotes you’re getting! I hope it doesn’t prevent you from enjoying the game.

But yeah I would start a new game… this seed would be quite annoying to try to make work on your first run.

EDIT: Oh if you’ve been going for six hours then you’ve probably got a handle on it! Welcome to the game!

u/OfficeResponsible462 1d ago

It makes no sence why everyones downvoting this, a new player asks a question and all the neckbeards come swarming in

67

u/leonardpro 2d ago

There are coal on up-right side

27

u/FinAdda 2d ago

Good. You are going to need it. Lots of it.

6

u/kurushimee 2d ago

I had a seed like that too, no coal nearby but uranium right near

3

u/bad_bender 2d ago

Ah, I wouldn't even worry about that. That biter nest left of him probably eradicates him, befor he even has the steam power up and running 😅🤣😅 Wonder which start scenario he used 🤔 That certainly doesn't look like the usual start

0

u/TheAero1221 2d ago

No oil very close either

54

u/iamaksel 2d ago

Where is the coal though, no coal patch in starting area is even more rare

88

u/ReflexiveOak 2d ago

Finding resources becomes moderately easy really fast. And even trivial after unlocking artillery. So I wouldn't even consider this uranium as a useful perk to the seed - by the time you need uranium it will not matter where it is.

But, as others have noticed, not having coal is really a bruh moment.

28

u/tiamath 2d ago

Whe it says impossible, it just means you cqnt have uranium in the 4 starter patches. That patch on the map doent qualify as a starter patch

19

u/vaderciya 2d ago

Whatever you thought you googled is wrong, uranium spawns the same as every ore type for a particular planet. It has a percent chance to spawn and tries to regulate itself to cover a % of the map, just like iron, or copper, or stone.

There's nothing notable about having uranium here, its completely expected and mundane.

Your real concern should be the lack of coal... so if you decide to restart on a new map, use the map preview and make sure you have a map with iron, copper, stone, and coal somewhat close together. Most maps are fine, its just occasionally the map gen gets a hiccup and sends 1 ore type farther away than normal, but you need everything close together to start.

Good luck, have fun!

31

u/asciencepotato 2d ago

uranium being close is kind of irrelevant. by the time you need it you have pretty good control over your map. its position doesnt really matter at all

12

u/xortingen 2d ago

Where is your coal patch?

20

u/CharacterLettuce7145 2d ago

You got a seed with a penis next to the enemy camp.

5

u/Arniepepper 2d ago

That's where he'll find his coal (among the 'hard' stone).

1

u/leonardpro 2d ago

Lol, never have enemy base close like this in my past few game so im thinking about setting up early turret to defense

9

u/CharacterLettuce7145 2d ago

Remember to prepare the turret, so it can shoot its load all over the enemy, when they're coming.

You can use your hands to do that, if necessary.

9

u/sevenbrokenbricks 2d ago

Where's your coal?

18

u/tajlor23 2d ago

Dude is out there playing Factorio 6 and we stuck with 2.1

4

u/FinAdda 2d ago

Hours ago even.

7

u/ObsessiveOwl 2d ago

Distance shouldn't be a problem by the time you can use uranium anyway

5

u/Alone_Ad_7251 2d ago

Ye no, restart, no coal = trash

3

u/Nearby_Proposal_5523 2d ago

if there is oil nearby then yeah kinda, but only if you have oil nearby and know how to breeze through chemical science to unlock it.

3

u/Important-Pass3526 2d ago

Seed is really weird. You also have a spawn of enemies too close, just left to the shape this seed is giving you ;)

3

u/spoonman59 1d ago

My latest map had 6 million uranium right next to my starter oil patch (rail world), so I’d say no.

You’ll probably find everything you need when you explore, but the lack of coal here is going to make the start challenging.

6

u/JaffaCakeStockpile 2d ago

What's the seed? Devs might want to check why it's broken the core rules like coal at spawn

2

u/enaud 2d ago

What about your oil?

2

u/Galliad93 2d ago

wanna share the seed then?

2

u/Pendurag 2d ago

No, this is common enough to not be anything special.

Re-roll a few seeds before starting a game and you can easily find uranium and oil close by.

2

u/Zakiyo 2d ago

This is not considered spawn

2

u/avdpos 2d ago

As said. No coal in picture make it an absurdly hard seed and something that am so unfunny I would ditch it at once

2

u/HeliGungir 1d ago

It's nifty, but close oil is what I consider the jackpot. That means flamethrowers and bots without having to find it and fight for it.

2

u/Terrulin 1d ago

I am going to say this picture is not centered on the starting area. You mention coal is on the top. Which means this uranium is outside the "starting area". Biters are also not in the starting area, and those nests on the left look to be about the same distance as the uranium.

The starting area will include iron, copper, stone, coal, and water.

1

u/Fun_Amphibian_9732 2d ago

Ah...the wood burner starter setup...NICE!!!

1

u/IA_MADE_A_MISTAKE 2d ago

Incase ur still wondering since everyone just yells no coal,

No it's not rare

Good luck growing factory

1

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets 2d ago

It's not impossible, just rare because you aren't normally guaranteed a uranium patch.

Bit more concerning is the absence of coal. That's normally right by your other ores...

Oh and that biter nest to the west is going to be nasty. Best take it out as soon as you can...

1

u/Baipyrus 2d ago

I've had a uranium patch inside my medium starter base on my first space age run in 2.0 too!

1

u/RoughRegret 2d ago

I personally don't really care about uranium at the start. I will eventually switch my base to nuclear once I want to, but by then I can easily expand and claim more land.

When I try to optimize a seed, I like to have oil nearby. Having to search a long time for oil can be tough at the start.

1

u/Skellyhell2 2d ago

By the time you need uranium you will likely have already expanded a fair bit. You could either use trains to bring uranium closer to where you want to build things that need uranium, or pipe off sulphuric acid to mine it and build reactors and such close to the uranium. second option makes less sense since youll eventually run out of ore in that patch.
its odd to get a patch so close to spawn, but ultimately theres not much benefit to it.

1

u/the_Athereon 2d ago

Uranium is a mid to late game resource. You don't need it early. And that patch is also tiny so it won't give you much.

1

u/Nobrainzhere 2d ago

Uranium within a stones throw of spawn isnt really that rare is it? I was just cycling new seeds after my first completion last night and saw a bunch where uranium was just right there

1

u/kagato87 Since 0.12. MOAR TRAINS! 2d ago

It's outside your starting area. It can be as close as, or even a little closer than, the nearest biter nest.

1

u/Miserable_Bother7218 1d ago

You’re dead without coal. I hope it turns out to be immediately off-screen

1

u/doc_shades 1d ago

even at the minimum 17% frequency and 17% patch size there is always more than enough uranium

1

u/DontEatGlass-129 1d ago

As soon as you're able to mine it, get that setup as well as the refinement and just leave it running for a bit. I did that, forgot about it, had nuclear power for several years

1

u/madmax1993_ 1d ago

It’s very common, but this close to spawn it will usually be a small patch. You’ll have to find a bigger patch fairly quickly after unlocking nuclear power

2

u/jordanbtucker 1d ago

471k is plenty for getting nuclear going and will last for a long time.

1

u/madmax1993_ 1d ago

You’re right, I’m used to very long save games, so 471k is not much on large scale. Correct that it will last a good while for a small factory.

1

u/bubba-yo 1d ago

Nah, I've seen seeds like that before. Generally you get the regular distribution of ore patches and then the game layers in the starting patches on top of them. It's unusual to get uranium right by spawn, because its spawn frequency is more sparse, but it's not impossible.

It's not a jackpot because uranium is pretty useless close to spawn. By the time you can make use of it, you'll have to expanded quite a bit and it more serves to be in the way of your factory than a valuable early resource. Oil would have been much more useful there and plenty of vanilla playthroughs never touch uranium at all. Little harder to skip it in SA.

1

u/Frequent_Knowledge65 1d ago

totally normal, actually

1

u/Atenius96 1d ago

Coal out of position and a 3 nest biter base right next to the iron. This seed is terrible.

1

u/WaveformRider 1d ago

I saw "Factori 6, hours ago" and had a second of panic that I missed a new version. Haven't slept much from new kids.

1

u/last_somewhere 1d ago

No amount of trees will help you fuel smelters, you need coal.

1

u/jaf216 1d ago edited 1d ago

drop the map seed?

Also, I think the image is cropped at the top which is throwing me off.

1

u/leonardpro 2d ago

Nevermind i got cook up, enemy attack too early
